Run the Jewels

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Run The Jewels, Vince Staples, Sleigh Bells @ 50 Kent (NORTHSIDE)
After long-running and consistently great separate careers, El-P and Killer Mike joined forces and deservedly catapulted themselves further into the public eye than ever before. Making this show even better is rising rap star of the moment Vince Staples, and loud pop duo Sleigh Bells.

Zola Jesus, Blanck Mass, Container @ Warsaw (NORTHSIDE)
Zola Jesus has been making quality dark pop for years now, most recently on 2014’s Taiga (her first for Mute). Two noisy electronic artists open this show.

Le1f, Princess Nokia, DJ HVAD @ Brooklyn Bowl (NORTHSIDE)
Eccentric rapper Le1f headlines POP Montreal’s Northside showcase at Brooklyn Bowl tonight.

Institute, Anasazi, Cheena, Mommy @ Palisades (NORTHSIDE)
Institute (mem Wiccans, Glue) recently put out their new record on Sacred Bones, which features a contribution from Parquet Courts’ Andrew Savage (also previously of Wiccans), and PC’s style isn’t too far removed from what Institute are doing here. A few good local punk and post-punk bands open the show.

Vatican Shadow, Shifted, 400PPM, Dual Action @ Home Sweet Home (Nothing Changes)
Yesterday, Prurient was the special guest at Saint Vitus, and today main man Dominick Fernow plays NYC with another of his projects, Vatican Shadow. This show goes laaaate.

The Sun Ra Arkestra, PC Worship, Shilpa Ray @ Rough Trade (NORTHSIDE)
Keeping alive the music of the late groundbreaking jazz musician Sun Ra is longtime sideman Marshall Allen, who leads The Sun Ra Arkestra. Tonight’s show is good all around with local noise rockers PC Worship and punk blues singer Shilpa Ray.

Enabler, Meek is Murder, White Widows Pact, Mary Todd @ Acheron
The killer double-billed hardcore tour of Enabler and Meek Is Murder rolls through NYC tonight. Enabler are releasing their new album, Fail to Feel Safe, later this year via Century Media, and Meek Is Murder recently dropped their newest, Onward/Into the Sun.

Girlschool, Crucified Barbara, Old James, Velvet Black @ Saint Vitus
The UK’s Girlschool have long been associated with Motorhead, and like that band they’ve been churning out hard rock for decades. Their newest album is due this summer, 35 years after their debut, Demolition.

Light Asylum, Honduras, eskimeaux, American Wrestlers @ UO Live Stage (NORTHSIDE)
With part of Bedford Ave closed to auto traffic, there’s live music set up right on the street (Bedford/N5) and this day show features a diverse lineup, including electro act Light Asylum and guitar-pop band Honduras.

Jackson Scott @ Rough Trade
Living in the same sonic universe as Ty Segall, Mikal Cronin (or Tame Impala), Jackson Scott’s got a swirling psych sound that’s equal parts chunky riffs and big pop hooks.  This is a free afternoon show, starts at 2 PM.

Viet Cong, SannhetGirl Band @ Music Hall of Williamsburg (NORTHSIDE)
While there are definite echoes of Gang of Four, Wire, Neu!, Joy Division and other postpunk/kraut influences, Viet Cong don’t really sound like any of them. It’s a weird, complex blend of those things, put through a kaleidoscopic lens filter that’s best experienced live. This is their second of two Northside shows with intense Irish group Girl Band and tonight’s show is extra great, because Brooklyn post-metal trio Sannhet round out the bill.

Future Punx, Pill, Waltz, What Moon Things, Jackson Scott, Pink Mexico @ Cameo (NORTHSIDE)
Dull Tools labelmates Future Punx and Pill headline this Northside bill that also includes garage rocker Jackson Scott.

Guantanamo Baywatch, GYMSHORTS, Scully @ The Wick
Portland beach party garage rockers Guantanamo Baywatch just released the fun Darling…It’s Too Late album and are in NYC for two shows. Tonight’s is at this cavernous former brewery and the show also features fun local band Scully

Ricky Eat Acid, Foxes in Fiction, Emily Reo @ Baby’s All Right (NORTHSIDE)
The Kenmore/Orchid Tapes Northside showcase offers a lineup of ambient pop from RIcky Eat Acid, Foxes In Fiction, and Emily Reo.

Bad Religion, Plague Vendor, Lost In Society @ Starland Ballroom
Bad Religion just wrapped up a sold-out run of four wild NYC shows (at least the one we caught was), and before leaving the area they’ll play a larger venue in the nearby Sayreville, NJ.

Ne-Yo, Ludacris, Cash Cash @ Barclays Center
With so many great Northside shows happening, a big mainstream R&B/rap show might not be your choice destination tonight, but if it is, there’s no denying that Ne-Yo and Ludacris both have their fair share of bangers.

The Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra @ Riis Park Beach Bazaar
Spend your day dancing to salsa versions of your favorite indie songs on Rockaway Beach this afternoon with The Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra. It’s free.

Alvvays @ The Surf Lodge
If you’re out in Montauk today, going to see charming Canadian guitar pop band Alvvays is probably a good option.
