George Clinton

It’s Independence Day Weekend and we’ve got a guide to holiday events/concerts, and you can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows. Meanwhile, here are some highlights…

George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic, Fonky Kong @ Governors Island
It’s the “Funk n’ Cue” bash, starring interplanetary groovemaster George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic. Opening is Fonky Kong, who feature a member of Lettuce. Doors are at 5 PM.

Evan Caminiti, Circuit Des Yeux, Ancient Ocean @ Trans-Pecos
Circuit des Yeux (aka Haley Fohr) recently released her new album, In Plain Speech, which is her first for Thrill Jockey and first with a full band. The band is also on tour with her, and tonight’s her first of two NYC shows. Headlining is her Thrill Jockey labelmate Evan Caminiti (aka one half of Barn Owl).

Sasha, SCUBA, Guti, Agoria, Kate Simko, Brad Miller, Joris Voorn @ Verboten StageONE at 50 Kent
The long weekend starts early with all-day “Last Day on Earth” party which is the first of the big shows Verboten is presenting at 50 Kent. Doors at noon.

Juan Atkins, DUST, Reade Truth, Alex From Queens @ Good Room
Keep dancing late into the evening with this party headlined by techno originator Juan Atkins.

Old Wounds, Vein, Go Deep, Icarus @ Grand Victory
NJ’s Old Wounds released their second album, The Suffering Spirit, this week, offering up more of their crushing metallic hardcore. If you’re going, it’s also worth catching 6131 signees Go Deep, who make pissed-off heavy hardcore.

Talib Kweli @ Commodore Barry Park (International African Arts Festival)
The Interntional African Arts Festival began Thursday and runs through Sunday. Today’s the second date, and features local hip hop veteran Talib Kweli headlining. Admission is a suggested donation of $5 (or $2 for children).

The Gradients, Bambara, Heaven’s Gate, The Cradle @ Palisades
This is a very solid bill of NYC indie rock, which serves as the tour kickoff for The Gradients and The Cradle. In between are the very boisterous Bambara, and the muscular, melodic/dreamy sounds of Heaven’s Gate.

Ital, Umfang, Pictureplane, Cities Aviv @ Lot 45
Local dancefloor-movers Ital, Umfang and Pictureplane team up with rap weirdo Cities Aviv for this late-night party at Bushwick restaurant/bar/venue Lot 45 (411 Troutman St). It’s free before 11 PM, and $10 after that.

Crime in Stereo, Incendiary, Royal Psalms @ Saint Vitus
If you dig Long Island hardcore, this bill is tailor-made for you with the long-running melodic band Crime In Stereo and the newer, more metallic Incendiary.

Pile, The Austerity Program, Couch Slut @ The Bell House
If you dig the sounds of noisy underground ’90s rock, this whole lineup should appeal to you. Describing the entire bill, Justin from The Austerity Program says it offers “three takes on the question nobody asked in 1994: “All the people buying these AmRep seven-inches, what will their music sound like in about two decades?” Your tl/dr answer: Pile = “rock-y”, The Austerity Program = “pound-y”, Couch Slut = ” gonorrhea-y”.” There you have it.

Izzy True, Vagabon, Fern Mayo, Painted Zeros @ Silent Barn
Don Giovanni-signed singer/songwriter Izzy True has a sound that’s part anti-folk, part indie rock on her debut EP that came out on DG this week.

The Growlers @ Surf Lodge
If you’re out in Montauk for the holiday weekend, The Surf Lodge seems to be a cool place to catch popular bands playing very intimate shows. Tonight it’s garagey party-rockers The Growlers.

The Grateful Dead‘s Chicago shows are this weekend, and there are a few places you can watch the simulcast in the NYC-area.

For all of tonight’s shows, and tomorrow’s, check out our NYC concert calendar.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.
