What's going on Friday? (Total Control, Veruca Salt, R. Ring, U2, Daniel Romano, Thou, Blake Mills, Big K.R.I.T. & more)

Total Control

Total Control, Crazy Spirit, Nandas @ Palisades
Total Control’s Mikey Young is touring-adverse (he is a very busy mastering engineer among other things) so this short tour they’re on is pretty rare. NYC is lucky with two chances to see them. Who knows if they’ll tour again? Don’t miss out.

U2 @ MSG
Rock and pop superstars U2 wrap up their eight-show run at Madison Square Garden tonight. Many of the shows have had special guests… might they pull out all the stops for this final show?

Veruca Salt, Charly Bliss @ Webster Hall
Comeback albums are often approached with a raised eyebrow, but Veruca Salt’s first album with the original lineup in 20 years picked up right where they left off, making hooky, crunchy rock. Charly Bliss, who probably own a copy of American Thighs, open the show and are worth catching.

TV Girl, Jerry Paper, Novelty Daughter @ Shea Stadium
TV Girl released the highly-underrated French Exit last year which is a nice mix of indie pop, an early ’90s/Daisy Age approach to sampling/beats, and a highly cynical lyrical view of relationships. Their live show is fun, too. Bathrobed eccentric Jerry Paper is also on this bill.

Blizzard Babies, Honey Radar, Arm Candy, Glueboy, Will Neibergall @ Silent Barn
Indiana’s Honey Radar make sludgy, overdriven pop as can be heard on their excellent new EP, The Rabbit’s Voice. If you dug Sic Alps or ’90s-era Slumberland Records bands, you should definitely catch them at one of their NYC shows this weekend.

Tiny Hazard, Big Thief, Good Field, Reservations @ Trans-Pecos
Austin’s Reservations began as a folky duo of Jana Horn and Paul Price, having released a self-titled EP in 2012. Since then they’ve added drummer Jason Baczynski and have just released their debut full-length, Taking Time. With a smoky/dusty sound, you can draw comparisons to Widowspeak or Sharon Van Etten, but Reservations are doing their own thing too. Good Field (which is fronted by Price) plays as well.

R. Ring, Nina Nastasia @ The Bell House
R. Ring is Kelley Deal of the Breeders and Mike Montgomery of Ampline and make folky pop that echoes back to Deal’s other band but in  a much gentler way.

Big K.R.I.T., Angel Haze, The D.R.E.A.M Ring @ Prospect Park
Big K.R.I.T. and Angel Haze are both killer rappers, so seeing them together at a free show in a nice outdoor environment sounds like a pretty great way to spend a Friday night.

Blake Mills, Gabriel Kahane @ City Winery
Fiona Apple just played three nights at City Winery with Watkins Family Hour. She has a break in her schedule tonight, and that same venue hosts a set from her frequent collaborator Blake Mills. Hmm…

Smashing Pumpkins, Marilyn Manson @ Jones Beach
While Smashing Pumpkins’ recent recorded output doesn’t quite live up to their ’90s material (last year’s Monuments to an Elegy wasn’t half bad though), this tour is especially worth seeing because original drummer Jimmy Chamberlin is back in the fold. Marilyn Manson co-headlines.

Daniel Romano, Wild Leaves @ Rough Trade
Daniel Romano makes raw country with influences dating back to the 1940s but an undeniably modern sound. His new album If Ive Only One Time Askin’ is good stuff.

Thou, False, Forn, Sunrot @ Saint Vitus
Baton Rouge sludge metallers Thou have been pretty prolific lately. Last year’s Heathen isn’t getting old at all, and they already followed it with a collaborative album with The Body. Their black metal tourmates False recently put out their debut album after years of promising splits and EPs.

Jeff Rosenstock, Dan Andriano In The Emergency Room, Pet Symmetry, High Dive @ Webster Hall Marlin Room
This bill is pretty great all around. Co-headining are Jeff Rosenstock, who has not one but two good indie-punk albums out this year (a solo LP and a collaboration with Chris Farren), and Alkaline Trio co-frontman Dan Andriano, whose new album is produced by Jeff. Opening are hooky punks Pet Symmetry (one of the many bands to feature Evan Weiss) and scrappy pop punks High Dive.

Eartheater, Shadowbox + Soft Circle @ Trans-Pecos
Eartheater, the deeply psychedelic solo project of Guardian Alien member Alexandra Drewchin, plays Trans-Pecos tonight with a collaborative set from two other experimental musicians, Shadowbox and Soft Circle.

The Mystery Lights, Acid Dad, Jungle Green @ Our Wicked Lady
Perhaps Brooklyn’s best garage-psych outfit, The Mystery Lights play this new Bushwick spot tonight with fellow fuzz-lovers Acid Dad. This show is free.

Erol Alkan, Fort Romeau, JDH & Dave P @ Output
Producer, remixer, one-half of prog-dance duo Beyond the Wizard’s Sleeve, and Todd Rundgren collaborator Erol Alkan has impeccable taste and impressive DJ skills.

Ronald Paris, True Blue @ Baby’s All Right
This was supposed to be the first of two NYC shows for Finnish artist Jaakko Eino Kaveli who had to cancel his trip due to dreaded visa issues. Porches’ Ronald Paris stays on the bill and the show is now free.

Parlor Walls @ Fulton Stall Market
South Street Seaport’s multi-use Fulton Stall Market is hosting free shows on Friday. The space is nice, there’s bar and a secluded courtyard…worse ways to spend a couple hours after work on a Friday.

Chain and the Gang, Shilpa Ray @ BSP Kingston
Ian Svenonius’ current rock n’ roll concern, Chain and the Gang, will start their tour with Thurston Moore soon but play this Kingston, NY show tonight first. If you’re out that way and going, Shilpa Ray is awesome too.
