Grace Jones

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Afropunk Festival @ Commodore Barry Park
It’s day one of the awesome multi-genre two-day Afropunk Festival, and there’s a ton of great artists today including Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Death Grips, Kelis, Danny Brown, Suicidal Tendencies, Candiria, SZA, Lion Babe, Oshun and plenty more.

Earl Sweatshirt, Remy Banks, NxWorries @ Best Buy Theater
Earl Sweatshirt’s new album I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside, is an inward-looking record that ignores most current rap trends, and it’s one of the year’s finest albums. This tour was supposed to hit NYC back in the spring, but it got postponed and finally comes here tonight.

Colleen Green, Single Lash, Mannequin Pussy @ Cake Shop
Colleen Green’s new album is her first with a full band, and it’s a great record of lyrically honest poppy punk. Her current tour is also with a full band, and her tourmates are the likeminded Mannequin Pussy, who are also worth catching. This is the first of two NYC shows.

Pianos Become The Teeth, The World is a Beautiful Place & I am No Longer Afraid To Die, Turnover, Take One Car @ Le Poisson Rouge
This is a pretty amazing lineup all around. Pianos Become the Teeth put out one of our favorite albums of last year with the atmospheric emo of Keep You, and going by the sounds of TWIABP’s new single “January, 10th, 2014,” they may have a similarly epic album of their own on the way. Turnover make jangle pop that kinda sounds like a more emo Real Estate, and Take One Car make post-hardcore of the mewithoutYou/La Dispute variety.

All Dogs, The Sidekicks, Fleabite, Florist @ Silent Barn
Frequent tourmates All Dogs and The Sidekicks are on the road together again, this time supporting All Dogs’ soon-to-be-released Kicking Every Day. That album offers a high quality indie/pop punk crossover, while The Sidekicks’ newest headed in a Shins/Band of Horses direction.

Social Distortion, Nikki Lane, Drag The River @ Stone Pony
Social Distortion’s classic self-titled major label debut turns 25 this year, and they’re celebrating by playing the whole thing on tour. There’s no NYC date, but they’ll be nearby tonight.

Billboard Hot 100 Music Festival @ Jones Beach
This may be largely a mainstream pop festival, but there’s actually some stuff worth catching. Today has big names like The Weeknd, Lil Wayne, Santigold and Cold War Kids, plus (weirdly enough) indie-dance band The Faint.

Andres, Kyle Hall, Pender Street Steppers, Hashman Deejay, Laraaji @ MoMA PS1 (Warm Up)
Every Saturday afternoon in the summer, MoMA PS1 brings a full day of experimental and electronic music to their (hopefully) sunny courtyard. This is the third to last one of 2015.

Pop. 1280, Pill, Buck Gooter, The Sherman Group @ Alphaville
If it’s noisy, post-punk inspired rock you like, you’ll dig this bill featuring the bleak Pop. 1280, saxxy skronkers Pill, and the industrial blues of Buck Gooter.

No Parents, Honduras, Surfbort @ Baby’s All Right
If you like your garage punk on the poppy and snotty side, LA troublemakers No Parents might fit the bill. Their album May The Thirst Be With You came out earlier this year on Burger Records and features such party ragers as “I’m a Dildo,” “Pizza,” and “Hey Illuminati” — titles which should give you an idea for what kid of show to expect tonight. Tonight’s bill is solid overall, with poppy garage rockers Honduras and also wild punks Surfbort.

Complete, Octagrape, Honey Radar @ Union Pool (Summer Thunder)
It’s the penultimate edition of Union Pool’s 2015 Summer Thunder series, featuring the first-ever NYC show by Texas cult rock band Complete, Octagrape (the current band from onetime Souljunk and Truman’s Water dude Glen Galloway) and short song masters Honey Radar.

Mykki Blanco, Princess Nokia, LSDXOXO @ Riis Park Beach Bazaar
Mykki Blanco is allegedly no longer a rapper, but still a writer and a spoken word artist. Who knows what will be in store for today’s performance?

Frankie Cosmos, Whitney, Lionlimb @ Shea Stadium
Frankie Cosmos’ intimate sound is somewhere between twee pop and anti-folk. She brings it to the appropriately intimate venue Shea Stadium tonight.

Peter Stampfel, Big Cheese, Mothers, Swaai Boys, Lame, Phonoscenes @ Aviv
It’s pretty amazing that folk legend (and Holy Modal Rounders member) Peter Stampfel is not only still active, but a regular on NYC’s current DIY scene. Tonight’s another chance to see him in action.

Slingshot Dakota, The Afraid Brigade, Teenage Halloween, Coolshark, Bannister @ Maxwell’s
Bethlehem, PA duo Slingshot Dakota make indie pop not unlike Mates of State, but with a punk drive that that band lacks. They’re always worth catching.

Anand Wilder (of Yeasayer), Hannah Cohen, Tamaryn, Sinkane (DJ sets) @ Freehold
Topman is throwing this free party featuring a host of DJ sets from cool local acts.  6 PM – 2 AM and you do need to RSVP.
