Downtown Boys

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Black Sabbath, Rival Sons @ Madison Square Garden
Metal as we know it wouldn’t exist without Black Sabbath, whose early records with Ozzy are absolute classics of the genre. They’re saying this is their last-ever tour, so don’t miss the chance to see them while you still can. They were incredible form at MSG on Thursday, so tonight’s likely gonna be good too.

Future, Ty Dolla $ign, Lil Donald @ Hammerstein Ballroom
Future’s basically on top of the world at the moment. He’s put out seven full lengths over the past year and a half that all vary from good to essential, and some of it is some of the absolute best rap coming out right now. It’s no surprise that this show (and his late show at Stage 48 tonight) are sold out. Also, the great R&B singer Ty Dolla $ign (whose single “Blase” features Future) provides direct support at this one.

Future @ Stage 48 (late show)
See above.

Ty Segall and The Muggers, CFM, Axis:sovA @ Webster Hall
Touring on one of the weirder records of his career, and featuring a killer band that includes King Tuff, Mikal Cronin and Cory from Wand, and finds Ty in pure frontman mode sans instrument which he seems to really enjoy. Old pal Charles Moothart’s band CFM opens.

Downtown Boys, Aye Nako, Amor Prohibido @ Baby’s All Right
Downtown Boys bring a live show that’s as political as it is fun, and filled with lots of sax. They’re one of those bands that you just have to see for yourself to fully get the Downtown Boys experience. Sold out.

Baths, Deradoorian @ Baby’s All Right
The always-progressing electronic pop artist Baths returns to NYC tonight, and it’s a great double bill with Deradoorian, whose eccentric pop debut came out last year. This is the late show after Downtown Boys, and also sold out.

Black Tusk, Holy Grail, Blackest, Mammal @ Saint Vitus
Black Tusk returned earlier this year with Pillars of Ash, which is a killer record and quite possibly their most consistently intense release yet (it’s also sadly their last recorded with late bassist Jonathan Athon). They’re sure to crush tonight.

The Soul Rebels w/ Talib Kweli, Nigel Hall, Rakim & special guests; Natasha Diggs @ Brooklyn Bowl
New Orleans brass band The Soul Rebels wrap up their run at Brooklyn Bowl tonight, and this set includes appearances from NYC rap staple Talib Kweli, retro-soul singer Nigel Hall, the highly influential Rakim, and more special guests. Natasha Diggs opens.

B-52s, Mike + Ruthy @ Capitol Theatre
New wave vets The B-52s are still going strong, and stay very active on the road. Their current tour doesn’t hit NYC, but it’ll be nearby. They played Long Island last night and tonight they’re in Port Chester.

Fucking Invincible, V-Sect, Mauler, Slav @ Acheron
Providence hardcore band Fucking Invincible includes members of Dropdead and Daughters, and as you might expect, they make a hell of a racket. Their 2014 album, It’ll Get Worse Before It Gets Better, is a ripper, but this is really the kind of thing you want to see live.

DFA Records Winter Hot Dog No. 1 feat. DFA Records (DJ set), Special Guests) @ Good Room
The nice folks at DFA Records are throwning another of their “hot dog” parties, featuring many of their roster on DJ duty and a surprise live performance (Essaie Pas? Guerilla Toss? Holy Ghost?).

Seu Jorge @ Blue Note
Best known here in America for acting in City of God and The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou (which he scored using only acoustic, Portuguese-language David Bowie covers), but Brazilian artist Seu Jorge has been making music since the ’90s. This is part of his 10-night run at the Blue Note.

The Big Pink, The Heirs @ Le Poisson Rouge
UK duo The Big Pink are back with a new EP of anthemic dancerock. This is their second of two NYC shows.

MS MR, San Fermin, YACHT @ Studio E Warehouse
This trio of indie acts play this Jukely-sponsored show. Free for Jukely members.

Mike Birbiglia @ The Lynn Redgrave Theater
Comedian Mike Birbiglia has been doing his show “Thank God for the Jokes” for nearly two years. He’s putting it to bed, but not before this run — which just got extended till May.

Tonight’s jennylee show at Bowery Ballroom was cancelled (along with the rest of her tour).

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.
