What's going on Friday?

mewithoutYou
mewithoutYou at Webster Hall in 2015 (more by Amanda Hatfield)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

U.S. Girls, She-Devils, Bayonne @ Baby’s All Right
U.S. Girls, aka Meg Remy, made her 4AD debut last year with the terrific Half Free, her most refined — yet still highly charged — set of songs yet. She headlines this very solid triple bill with Montreal duo She-Devils and Austin synthmaster Bayonne.

Jon Brion @ City Winery
Jon Brion’s residency shows at Los Angeles club Largo are the stuff of legend, but he hasn’t had a show in NYC in five years…until his current visit. This is his second of two sold-out shows here this weekend.

Say Anything, mewithoutYou, Teen Suicide, Museum Mouth @ Webster Hall
This bill is pretty awesome all around. Say Anything’s early material has proved to be influential on a handful of newer indie/emo bands, the shapeshifting mewithoutYou reignited their career last year with their best album since the mid-2000s, and Teen Suicide and Museum Mouth are both two promising young bands in the lo-fi punk world.

Floating Points (live), FaltyDL @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Last year Floating Points released his great debut album, Elaenia, which was recorded with a full band and was closer to chilled-out jazz than his earlier electronic recordings. He’s on tour in support of it again with an 11-piece band. This is the second of two sold-out NYC shows this week.

Floating Points (DJ Set), Love On The Run (DJ Set), You’re A Melody @ Good Room
After Floating Points’ live show at MHOW, he DJs the Good Room in Greenpoint.

Ryley Walker @ Market Hotel
Ryley Walker recalls ’60s psychedelic folk and he’s as genuinely impressive at guitar as he is at singing and songwriting. Today he plays an early show (6 PM start) and he’s performing solo acoustic in the round.

Mark Pritchard & Jonathan Zawada: Under the Sun @ Red Bull Studios
Electronic musician Mark Pritchard releases his new album Under the Sun this week and it, among other things, features collaborations with Thom Yorke and Linda Perhacs. Tonight he’ll perform music from it with an “immersive audiovisual experience” made in collaboration with visual artist Jonathan Zawada, part of Red Bull Music Academy.

Dead Meadow, Kohoutek @ Saint Vitus
Dead Meadow have been making ’60s-inspired psychedelic rock for over a decade now. Tonight’s their second of two NYC shows.

The Spook School, Bent Shapes, The Regrets, Patio @ The Gateway
NYC Popfest isn’t till next week, but you can get ready early with this punk-tinged taste tonight featuring Scottish band Spook School (who are worth going to see if only for the drummer’s banter, but they’re great) and Boston’s Bent Shapes.

Plants and Animals, Wintersleep, Natureboy @ Rough Trade
Montreal’s Plants and Animals returned this year with their new album Waltz in from the Rumbling, which keeps their brand of warm, welcoming indie rock alive.

Peach Kelli Pop, Fern Mayo, Flower Girl, Yucky Disaster @ Palisades
Peach Kelli Pop’s name tells you pretty much all you need to know about the band: infectious, sugary melodies with scrappy guitars.

Future Punx, Martin Bisi, Nuraxi, Piss Off @ Alphaville
Brooklyn’s very fun nu-wave reimaginers Future Punx kick off their spring tour tonight.

Rogue Wave, Annie Hart (of Au Revoir Simone) @ Bowery Ballroom
Rogue Wave’s new album ‘Delusions of Grand Fur’ adds an ’80s synth element to the band’s guitar pop sound which works rather nicely. If you’re going be sure to get there in time to see Annie Hart of Au Revoir Simone who is working on her first solo record.

Shana Cleveland (of La Luz), Kyp Malone (of TV On the Radio) @ Shea Stadium
La Luz just played Market Hotel, and singer Shana Cleveland is sticking around to play a solo show tonight. Kyp of TVOTR in on the bill tool.

Jose James @ Blue Note (2 shows)
Neo-soul great Jose James continues a residency at Blue Note, which has him playing two shows a night through Sunday.

Horse Feathers, Korey Dane @ American Beauty
Long-running Portland indie folkies Horse Feathers are still kicking, having last released So It Is With Us in 2014. Tonight they return to NYC for a show at Midtown beer bar/music venue American Beauty.

Modern Baseball, Sorority Noise, Pinegrove & more @ Wonder Bar
Modern Baseball’s new album Holy Ghost is out today. They’ll be in NYC for two shows later in the year, but tonight they play a sold-out release how in Asbury Park with a killer lineup. Openers include the passionate rockers Sorority Noise, quickly-rising twangy indie rockers Pinegrove, and more.

A joyous million bands tribute to Prince Rogers Nelson @ Cake Shop
This is pretty much what it sounds like: a whole bunch of bands covering Prince. Should be a lot of fun, and it’s free.

Kiki & Herb @ Joe’s Pub
Legendary lounge/cabaret duo Kiki and Herb (aka Justin Vivian Bond and Kenny Mellman) went into retirement in 2007 but they’re returning to the stage for this run called “Kiki and Herb: Seeking Asylum!” Sold out but a limited number of tickets given away free each night via lottery.

Mike Birbiglia @ The Lynn Redgrave Theater
Comedian Mike Birbiglia has been doing his show “Thank God for the Jokes” for nearly two years. He’s putting it to bed, but not before this run which was recently extended through May.

Comedy Bang! Bang! Live! @ Gramercy Theatre (2 shows)
Scott Aukerman is taking Comedy Bang! Bang! on the road with Paul F. Tompkins, Lauren Lapkus, and Neil Campbell. This is their first of three sold-out nights at Gramercy, with two separate shows happening tonight.
