What's going on Friday?

Sondre Lerche at Bowery Ballroom
Sondre Lerche at Bowery Ballroom in 2017 (more by Stephanie Augello)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Florence + the Machine @ Central Park SummerStage (Good Morning America)
Florence + the Machine’s highly anticipated new album High As Hope just came out today, and if you’d like to see Florence celebrate it bright and early, head to Central Park SummerStage at 6 AM. She’s performing there for Good Morning America, and admission is free and open to the public.

Sondre Lerche @ Pete’s Candy Store
Having just wrapped up a few Midwest dates, Sondre Lerche is playing a very, very intimate show at Brooklyn’s Pete’s Candy Store for the lucky few who RSVP’d in time for this free show.

Del Close Marathon
It’s the 20th anniversary of the Upright Citizen’s Brigade’s annual 56-hour improv marathon that will feature 750 shows across 11 different stages with such funny people as Paul Scheer, Anthony Atamanuik, Nicole Byer, Jessica St. Clair, Ellie Kemper, Nick Kroll, Jason Mantzoukas, Jack McBrayer, Thomas Middleditch, Adam Pally, Ben Schwartz, Zach Woods, Sasheer Zamata and so many more. This is the last year the DCM happens in NYC (it moves to LA next year) so don’t miss out.

U2 @ Prudential Center
Following two nights at Madison Square Garden, U2 bring the spectacle that is their Experience + Innocence tour to Newark tonight.

Dave Hause, Restorations @ Rocks Off Concert Cruise
In addition to singing in The Loved Ones and The Falcon, Dave Hause is a very active solo artist and he’s been touring like crazy behind last year’s Bury Me In Philly. Tonight he’s playing a boat in NYC with support from heartland punks Restorations, who are releasing their anticipated new album LP5000 later this year.

By The Grace Of God, Search, Old Ghosts, The Path @ Saint Vitus
Louisville post-hardcore vets By the Grace of God recently put out their first release in 15 years, the Above Fear EP, which is cut from the same cloth as the band’s classic ’90s albums and sounds pretty awesome. They’re in NYC tonight with direct support from the Revelation Records-signed Search (members of Turning Point, Mouthpiece, Floorpunch).

Paul Collins’ Beat, The Connection, The Ritualists @ Coney Island Baby
Power Pop great Paul Collins, whose late-’70s and early-’80s songs like “Hanging on the Telephone” and “Walking out on Love” has influenced tons of jangly groups to ccme.

Joe Jack Talcum (Dead Milkmen), Sean Spada, Alicia Jeanine @ The Sunview Luncheonette
Deal Milkmen guitarist Joe Jack Talcum, who sang lead on “Punk Rock Girl,” headlines this benefit to help a friend beat addiction.

Dessa, Monakr @ Warsaw
Doomtree rapper, singer, spoken word artist and more, Dessa is currently on a full-band world tour supporting her new album Chime.

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Styx, Tesla @ Jones Beach
Though Styx and Tesla may be a little less exciting than Joan Jett’s other recent tourmates (like The Who, Heart, and Cheap Trick for example), any chance to see this living punk legend is worth it.

Aaron West And The Roaring Twenties, Ace Enders, Can’t Swim, Dryjacket, King Neptune, Children’s Books @ The Kingsland
Leading this bill is two great emo/pop punk frontmen: The Wonder Years’ Dan Campbell with his Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties project (full band), and The Early November’s Ace Enders. Earlier on the bill is mathy emo band Dryjacket, who are also worth catching.

The Sadies, C.R. and the Degenerates @ Monty Hall
Toronto’s The Sadies have been making gritty, country and western inflected rock for nearly 25 years and are still going strong as last year’s Polaris-nominated Northwest Passages (which featured Kurt Vile). They’ll play Brooklyn’s Union Pool on Saturday.

Zomes, Stephen Strohmeier, Samara Lubelski + Marcia Bassett. @ Union Pool
Long-running Baltimore DIY duo Zomes (aka Asa Osborne and Hanna Olivegren), who you may have seen play in NYC with neighbors Beach House or Future Islands, recently released new LP The First Stone via Dischord.

Sheck Wes, Valee @ SOB’s
Harlem’s Sheck Wes and Chicago’s Valee both recently signed to G.O.O.D. Music, and they’re looking like they might be the label’s next two breakthroughs. They’re currently touring together, and later this year, they’ll tour opening for Pusha T.

Count Bass D @ C’mon Everybody
Bronx rapper Count Bass D has been consistently at it since the mid ’90s, and though he hasn’t released new music in a couple years, he’s got countless worthy songs to pull from tonight.

‘Family’ film screening w/ Insane Clown Posse @ The Well
Here’s an unlikely thing. New indie comedy Family features Taylor Schilling (Orang is the New Black) and Kristin Wiig that features a subplot where a teenage girl runs away from home to be a Juggalo and part of the film was actually shot at the Gathering of the Juggalos. So at this Rooftop Films screening, they got Insane Clown Posse to present the film and perform afterwards. Taylor Schilling will be there too. Who knows what will happen.

Springsteen on Broadway
The Boss continues his sold-out “Springsteen on Broadway” run at the Walter Kerr Theatre, which has now been extended through December. At these shows, Bruce is giving fans shows “that are as personal and as intimate as possible.”
