Godspeed You! Black Emperor

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Emel Mathlouthi @ Prospect Park Bandshell
Since reuniting in 2010, post-rock greats Godspeed You! Black Emperor now have as many reunion albums as they had during their initial run as a band (the latest being last year’s Luciferian Towers), and the new albums often rival the classics. They’re still a towering live band too, as you can witness at a few NYC-area shows this week. This one’s a free Brooklyn show, with support from Tunisian protest singer Emel Mathlouthi.

Joan of Arc, B Boys @ Asbury Lanes
Tim Kinsella’s long-running band Joan of Arc recently released their new album 1984, and this one has newer member Melina Ausikaitis on lead vocals.

Pennywise, Sick of It All, Slashers @ House of Vans
Pennywise headline one of the last-ever shows at House of Vans Brooklyn, and there’s very strong local support from NYHC legends Sick Of It All. It’s free, but you had to RSVP, which is now closed, and even if you RSVPed, it’s first come, first served.

Ultramagnetic MCs, Super Bueno @ The Safari Room at El Cortez
Kool Keith is having a super busy year (as usual), and tonight he’s back with his late ’80s / early ’90s era group Ultramagnetic MCs for a night that will surely be heavy on the classics.

Seu Jorge @ Blue Note (2 shows)
Brazilian singer and Life Aquatic troubadour Seu Jorge continues his 10-night Blue Note residency.

Alice Bag, Full Bush, Fruit & Flowers @ Mercury Lounge
LA punk icon Alice Bag is still going strong, having released her second solo album back in March and performs with more conviction than many singers half her age.

Franz Ferdinand, POW! @ Stone Pony
While we miss Nick McCarthy, Alex Kapranos and the rest of Franz Ferdinand remain consummate performers, delivering the hits with wit and panache some 15 years into their career.

Band of Horses, Bonny Doon @ The Capitol Theatre
Veteran Pacific Northwest rootsy alt-rockers Band of Horses have a new album on the way, so you may get a few new songs tonight. If you’re going, Detroit’s Bonny Doon are worth catching.

Gary Clark Jr. @ The Surf Lodge (Montauk)
Heading to Montauk for the weekend? Guitar hero and wearer of stylish hats, Gary Clark Jr plays this free show at this chic, waterside hotspot.

Springsteen on Broadway
The Boss continues his sold-out “Springsteen on Broadway” run at the Walter Kerr Theatre, which has now been extended through December. At these shows, Bruce is giving fans shows “that are as personal and as intimate as possible.”

Wild Fest @ Amityville Music Hall
The third annual Long Island DIY punk fest Wild Fest, which benefits the family memorial fund for the late Iron Chic guitarist Rob McCallister, begins today with reunited melodic punk greats Latterman, post-hardcore/pop punk blenders The Backup Plan, underground pop punk icon Mikey Erg, reunited ’90s punks Latex Generation, reunited emo-ish ’90s band Splurge, current post-hc staples Sainthood Reps, and more. The fest wraps up tomorrow.

Black Label Society, Corrosion of Conformity, Eyehategod @ The Paramount
Zakk Wylde’s band Black Label Society are on another tour with two great openers: crossover thrash vets Corrosion of Conformity and NOLA sludge vets Eyehategod. They play Long Island tonight and NJ tomorrow.

Comedy Party @ Secret Loft
This monthly showcase is held at a TBA location announced to ticket holders the day of the show, so purchasing tickets ahead of time is a must. But it’s well worth the effort, with a stacked lineup that includes Robert Dean (Comedy Central Comics to Watch), Kendra Cunningham (Last Comic Standing), Alexandra Kayhart (The Lantern Comedy Club), Seaton C. Smith (Late Night with Seth Meyers), Chloé Hilliard (Last Comic Standing), Tom Thakkar (CONAN), and Dean Edwards (Saturday Night Live).

Yardsdale Comedy Night @ Union Hall
Sketch comedy vets from Saturday Night Live, IFC, and more come together for a night of character work, songs, and more. Featuring Gary Richardson (SNL), Carmen Christopher (IFC), Anthony Oberbeck (The Annoyance), Ana Fabrega (The Chris Gethard Show), Andrew Tischer (The Chris Gethard Show), John Reynolds (Search Party), Matt Barats (The Onion), and more.
