Riot Fest 2018 - Sunday
Fear at Riot Fest 2018 (more by James Richards IV)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Paul Simon @ MSG
The legendary Paul Simon has been on his ‘Homeward Bound – The Farewell Tour’ all year and now he’s finally home. This is his second of what will apparently be his last three shows ever. The very last is in Flushing Meadows Corona Park on Saturday.

Low @ National Sawdust
Low’s truly stunning new album Double Negative is out now and it’s like nothing they’ve ever done before. They’re bringing these unique songs to life across three nights at Brooklyn’s National Sawdust. This is night three.

Fear, L.E.S. Stitches @ Gramercy Theatre
Fear helped shape hardcore punk (and by extension, alternative rock and post-hardcore and beyond) as we know it with their classic 1982 debut album The Record, which they just played in full at Riot Fest over the weekend. Now they’re continuing their 40th anniversary tour, which has also been heavily leaning on that album.

JPEGMAFIA, Joy Again @ Rough Trade
Avant-rapper JPEGMAFIA released his new album Veteran earlier this year, and as great as it is, he’s even better live. We recently caught him as a special guest with Denzel Curry (whose new album he’s on) and playing his own set at Afropunk Brooklyn, and both times he wasted no time jumping off the stage and into the crowd.

Mutual Benefit (acoustic) @ Rough Trade
Before JPEFMAFIA takes over Rough Trade, the venue hosts a much calmer show: an early acoustic set from Mutual Benefit.

Joan Baez @ Beacon Theatre
Paul Simon isn’t the only folk music veteran with a farewell tour hitting NYC tonight — Joan Baez is doing the same (but her “Fare Thee Well” tour continues through 2019).

Emma Ruth Rundle, Jaye Jayle, Nordra @ Saint Vitus
Dark singer/songwriter Emma Ruth Rundle is fresh off releasing her great new solo album On Dark Horses, and she’s now supporting it on tour with her Sargent House labelmate and collaborator Jaye Jayle (aka Evan from Young Widows).

The Growlers, Surfbort @ Brooklyn Steel
Named for their annual festival, The Growlers “Beach Goth” tour (which is just a regular tour, not a traveling fest) slides into Brooklyn tor two consecutive nights.

The Drums, SadGirl, Soft Ethnic @ Elsewhere
The Drums, who released Abysmal Thoughts last year, are playing this hometown warm-up show ahead of their appearance at California’s LIfe is Beautiful fest.

Babefest w/ Ani DiFranco, Resistance Revival Chorus, Torres, Amy Leon @ Warsaw
Babefest — a festival advocating for pro-choice political action — comes to Brooklyn for the first time, headlined by iconic singer/songwriter (and event curator) Ani DiFranco, and also featuring one of our favorite newer artists, Torres, and others.

Talib Kweli, NIKO IS, Mazzi @ Asbury Park
Brooklyn rap vet Talib Kweli remains prolific in the studio and busy on the road, and tonight he’s just outside of his hometown for an Asbury Park show.

Zeal & Ardor @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Zeal & Ardor makes a very unique mix of blues, slave spirituals and black metal, and he’s on tour now behind his sophomore album Stranger Fruit.

Thin Lips, Ellen & the Degenerates, Cheer Up, Teenage Halloween @ Bushwick Public House
Philly indie-punks Thin Lips are on the road supporting their very solid new LP Chosen Family, and this is the NYC release party for it.

SALES, No Vacation, Hana Vu @ Bowery Ballroom
This is a good chance to catch three buzzed about indie pop acts on one bill, headlined by the increasingly popular SALES. This same bill hits Elsewhere tomorrow too.

William Fitzsimmons @ Rockwood Music Hall
Singer/songwriter William Fitzsimmons releases his new album Mission Bell today, and he celebrates it at this “an evening with” show.

A Wilhelm Scream, Original Sharks, Jump for the Sails @ The Kingsland
Melodic hardcore staples A Wilhelm Scream say they’ve been working on a new album, and while most details are still TBA, maybe they’ll play a new song or shed some more light on it tonight.

Bettye LaVette, Vilray @ Sony Hall
On this year’s Things Have Changed, Bettye interprets the songs of Bob Dylan as only she can. With Bob releasing album after album of Frank Sinatra covers, it’s good someone’s singing Dylan songs.

Sound of Ceres, Special Guest @ Alphaville
Having recently wrapped up a tour with Beach House (with European dates still to come), ethereal Brooklynites Sound of Ceres wrap up their three-Friday residency at Alphaville tonight. As for the “special guest” the band only say “we can’t believe it!”

Brooklyn Comedy Festival @ Brooklyn Bazaar
The Brooklyn Comedy Festival continues its takeover of Brooklyn Bazaar with three floors of laughs. Tonight: Joe Pera & Conner O’Malley: Thank You Viacom!,” “Turner Masters Memory Hospital” live podcast taping, the Daily Show Writers Standup Tour, and “The Special Without Brett Davis” featuring Chris Getherard and many more.
