What's going on Friday?

BrooklynVegan holiday party flyer

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

BrooklynVegan Holiday Party w/ Gang Gang Dance, Ela Minus, BrooklynVegan DJs @ Brooklyn Brewery
It’s holiday season and we invite you to come celebrate with us at the BrooklynVegan Holiday Party at Brooklyn Brewery tonight. We put together an all-local lineup including headliners Gang Gang Dance (whose very good first album in seven years came out this year) and opener Ela Minus, whose electronic art pop should pair well with GGD. Members of the BrooklynVegan team will be DJing in between sets, and the first 50 people through the door get a free beer. Hope to see you there!

The Front Bottoms, Manchester Orchestra, Shannen Moser @ Brooklyn Steel
Folky pop punks The Front Bottoms and grungy indie rockers Manchester Orchestra make for a great pairing, so it’s exciting news that they’re currently on a co-headlining tour. They’re doing two nights in Brooklyn with TFB playing last night and MO playing last tomorrow. Singer/songwriter Shannen Moser’s opening set is not to miss either.

The Bouncing Souls, World/Inferno Friendship Society, Worriers @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
NJ punk heroes The Bouncing Souls are in the midst of a short Northeast run that’s pulling most heavily from 1996’s Maniacal Laughter and 2001’s How I Spent My Summer Vacation. With World/Inferno and Worriers on the bill, this should be a great night all around.

Ryley Walker, J.R. Bohannon, Dave Shuford Duo, Mute Duo @ Baby’s All Right
Guitar maestro Ryley Walker released a terrific new solo album and a song-for-song cover of Dave Matthews Band’s The Lillywhite Sessions this year, as well as a collaborative record with Running, so expect a little of everything tonight.

Drinks (Cate Le Bon + Tim Presley of White Fence), BLKLN, Eleanor Friedberger @ Market Hotel
Cate Le Bon and Tim Presley (White Fence, Darker My Love) have each made some skronky, esoteric music in their respective careers, but never so willfully, wonderfully weird as when they work together as Drinks.

Old 97’s, Rhett Miller @ Irving Plaza
While Old 97’s just released a Christmas album, we can’t imagine it’ll all be decking the halls tonight. Singer Rhett Miller pulls double duty as his own opening act.

Life of Agony, Sick of It All, BillyBio @ The Paramount
Life of Agony and Sick Of It All are two of New York’s most-loved long-running heavy bands, but they’ve never played together. Until now. They’re co-headlining this Long Island show tonight and New Jersey tomorrow. BillyBio (Billy from Biohazard’s new thing) opens both shows.

(Sandy) Alex G, Duster, Harmony Tividad (of Girlpool) @ Warsaw
(Sandy) Alex G headlines this show, and making it extra special is the newly-reunited Duster, who broke up after releasing just two albums in the late ’90s and early ’00s but went on to influence a lot of today’s indie bands, like (Sandy) Alex G and Girlpool (whose Harmony Tividad opens this show). Duster also play two headlining shows at Baby’s this weekend.

Taking Back Sunday, Rozwell Kid @ Starland Ballroom
Long Island emo vets Taking Back Sunday are doing their annual holiday run at NJ’s Starland Ballroom tonight and tomorrow, and these are extra special, as TBS will be playing their first three albums in full to celebrate their 20th anniversary.

Brian Fallon, Jared Hart @ Crossroads
The Gaslight Anthem frontman Brian Fallon had a busy year. TGA returned from hiatus to play The ’59 Sound in full, and Brian released the new solo album Sleepwalkers. He’s wrapping up the year with three shows in his NJ home state at Crossroads this weekend. This is night one.

Sunrot, Ether, DMP, Blame God @ Brooklyn Bazaar
Sludgy locals Sunrot have opened for a lot of cool bands this year (like Thou and Amenra), and tonight they’re doing a headlining gig at Brooklyn Bazaar.

The Originals (Clark Kent, Tony Touch, Rich Medina, Stretch Armstrong, D Nice) @ Chelsea Music Hall
Stretch Armstrong, Clark Kent, D-Nice, Rich Medina and Tony Touch brought their Originals party to Central Park Summerstage back in August, and tonight they’re doing it at NYC’s Chelsea Music Hall.

Pill, Public Practice, Future Punx @ Rough Trade
This is a seriously solid triple bill, with skronky post-punks Pill headlining, the danceable Public Practice and nu wavers Future Punx kicking things off.

Hollis Brown, Darryl DMC McDaniels, Jesse Malin, Lizzie Edwards, Don Dilego, Steve Conte, Byron Isaacs @ Coney Island Baby
Hollis Brown hosts this benefit for The Jimmy Fund: Dana Farber Cancer Institute, a “charity doing tremendous work in cancer treatment and research.” Expect special guest, raffles. lots of good cheer and, given the host and that Darryl DMC McDaniels is on the bill, a rendition of “Christmas in Hollis.”

1000 Yard Stare (members of The Bush Tetras), Gold Dime, Weeping Icon, Kate Mohanty @ The Glove
1000 Yard Stare is Valerie Opielski and Dee Pop (aka the rhythm section of The Bush Tetras) who play “avant-garde post punk with snatches of metal, skronk, jazz and dub.” This is their first performance in almost two years.

Springsteen on Broadway
After a year of sold-out shows at The Walter Kerr Theater, The Boss wraps up “Springsteen on Broadway” this weekend and this is the penultimate performance. For those who didn’t manage to score a ticket (or didn’t want to spend the money on them) his intimate show is coming to Netflix as a concert special on Sunday.
