What's going on Friday?

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Northside Festival
Northside Festival is fully underway and nearly every show tonight in Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Bushwick is part of it. But not all: we note official shows with “(Northside Fest).” Badges, if you have one, get you in but admission is based on capacity, so go early if it’s something you really want to see. Most shows you can also get tickets at the door, too.

Mysteryland
The US edition of electronic music festival Mysteryland returns to Bethel Woods (the location of the original Woodstock) this weekend, and highlights of the lineup today include Odesza, Gesaffelstein (DJ), MK, World’s Fair, Eauxzown, and more.

JEFF The Brotherhood, Flasher, Bombay @ Music Hall of Williamsburg (Northside Fest)
It feels a bit wrong to see JEFF the Brotherhood play in Brooklyn anywhere but Death by Audio, but seeing how that’s not an option anymore (DbA is now Vice’s lobby), they will enjoy the pristine sound of Music Hall of Williamsburg. Jake and Jamin Orall’s beer-friendly brand of riffy party rock sounds good anywhere, even in non-DIY spots.

D∆WN (Dawn Richard), Kingdom, DJ Earl @ Rough Trade (Northside Fest)
D∆WN (aka Dawn Richard) continues to push the boundaries of R&B, making music that’s sometimes danceable, sometimes atmospheric and heady, sometimes none of the above. She recently surprise-released an EP called Infrared that was entirely produced by the forward-thinking electronic musician Kingdom, who this show is with.

The World is a Beautiful Place & I am No Longer Afraid To Die, Two Inch Astronaut, For Everest @ Palisades (Northside Fest)
The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die are truly a unique band, with a sound that includes elements of Kinsella-style emo, soaring post-rock, atmospheric metal, bright synthpop, Neutral Milk Hotel-ish indie folk, and more; usually with at least three of those sounds popping up in the same song. Their live shows have eight or nine people on stage at once, with four guitarists, at least four singers, non-traditional (for rock) instrumentation, and more. Seeing them is quite the experience, and not one you’ll regret. Openers include Two Inch Astronaut (who are fresh off a tour with Speedy Ortiz and Hop Along) and For Everest (whose members have sang on stage with TWIABP before).

Spray Paint, Running, Beech Creeps, Matchess, Kid Millions/Jim Sauter Duo @ Union Pool (Northside Fest)
Austin label Monofonus Press put together this showcase that’s headlined by their hometown’s Spray Paint, who’s scratchy brand of art punk is like early Devo dropped in battery acid. Also on this bill: Chicago’s twisted trio Running, Brooklyn’s underrated Beech Creeps, the cinematic soundscapes of Matchess, and Oneida drummer Kid Millions teaming with saxophonist Jim Sauter.

Mudcrutch (w/ Tom Petty) @ Webster Hall
Mudcrutch, Tom Petty‘s pre-Heartbreakers band that were initially around in the early ’70s but didn’t record an album until 2008, are reunited this year for live shows and a second album. This is their first of two nights at Webster Hall.

Subhumans, The Zings @ Saint Vitus Bar (Northside Fest)
Legendary UK hardcore band Subhumans are touring the U.S. in between the Las Vegas and Asbury Park editions of Punk Rock Bowling Fest. They play the second of those this weekend, but first a Brooklyn show.

Colleen Green, Childbirth, Diet Cig @ Baby’s All Right (Northside Fest)
This late night show (doors at midnight) seems like a fun way to end your Friday night Northside, with the zingy, punky pop of Colleen Green, the very funny Childbirth (their first time on the East Coast), and the indomitable spirit of Diet Cig.

Vallens, Dead Leaf Echo, Stuyedeyed, Del Caesar, Heavy Birds, Libel @ ALPHAVILLE(Northside Fest)
Toronto band Vallens make druggy, shoegazy rock that sounds like a warm sweater on a cold, damp evening. They headline this night of similarly themed dreampop and noise.

Dam-Funk, Waajeed, DJ Shawn Dub @ American Museum of Natural History
The One Step Beyond series at the Museum of Natural History continues this month with the great Dam-Funk headlining. For the show, they’ll be “transforming the the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life into a massive dance club, complete with a cash bar.”

The Cave Singers, Blank Range @ Baby’s All Right (Northside Fest)
Derek Fudesco recently wrapped up a tour pulling double duty as a member of both Murder City Devils and Deep Creep, and now he’s dedicating his time to yet another of his bands, The Cave Singers. They self-released their new album Banshee earlier this year (previous albums have been on Jagjaguwar and Matador).

Pity Sex, PWR BTTM, Petal @ Bowery Ballroom
This is a pretty cool show all around, with shoegaze revivalists Pity Sex, glittery punk duo PWR BTTM, and Scranton indie rockers Petal. (Sold out.) Pity Sex also play a free Northside show this weekend.

Ronnie Stone and The Lonely Riders @ Brooklyn Bowl (Northside Fest)
How serious you take Ronnie Stone & the Lonely Riders is up to you but his intentionally kitschy, ’80s-in-a-blender shtick (somewhere between Bruce Springsteen and Prefab Sprout) is not without craft, even if it is a joke. Midnight doors for this one.

Peanut Butter Wolf, J Rocc, Samiyam, MNDSGN @ Brooklyn Bowl (Northside Fest)
Earlier in the evening at BB, it’s Stones Throw Records’ 20th anniversary party, featuring DJ sets including one by label founder Peanut Butter Wolf.

Heliotropes, Friend Roulette, Very Fresh, Secret Crush, Los Bronson @ Matchless (Northside Fest)
Their lineup has changed significantly over the last few years, but Heliotropes’ love of big rock riffs has not as can be heard on new LP Over There That Way which is out next week.

John Digweed @ Output
One of the Mysteryland-related shows happening in NYC this weekend is techno/house vet John Digweed at Output tonight.

Hercules and Love Affair @ Output
Meanwhile on the roof, dance under the stars to the sounds of NYC disco mavens Hercules & Love Affair.

The Bronx, The Falcon, Night Birds, The Lippies @ Stone Pony (Punk Rock Bowling night show)
Asbury Park’s Punk Rock Bowling festival officially starts tomorrow, but there are night shows tonight. This one’s good all around, with punk ‘n’ roll greats The Bronx, melodic punk supergroup The Falcon (mem Lawrence Arms, Alkaline Trio, Loved Ones), NJ/NY’s skate/surf punk torch carriers Night Birds, and Grand Rapids feminist pop punks The Lippies.

Mephiskapheles, Hub City Stompers @ The Wonder Bar (Punk Rock Bowling night show)
Another PRB late-night option is this smaller ska show at The Wonder Bar.

Zs, Battle Trance, Horselover Fats @ Knitting Factory Brooklyn (Northside Fest)
Having existed, expanded and contracted, since 2000, Brooklyn arty experimentalists Zs continue their own path via core members Sam Hillmer, Patrick Higgins, and Greg Fox. Get weird.

Tournament, Tower, Such Hounds, The Teen Age, Heliotropes @ Goldsounds (Northside Fest)
Of the many Northside options tonight, this one’s got scuzzy rock and rollers Tournament and more.

Simian Mobile Disco (DJ Set), Kenton Slash Demon, Iron Galaxy, JDH & Dave P @ Good Room
UK duo SMD have been making forward-thinking dance music for more than a decade. Tonight their skill and good taste will be put to the test on the 1s and 2s. While Output is in Williamsburg, note this is NOT part of Northside.

Jack and Eliza, Mass Gothic, Journalism @ Shea Stadium
Mass Gothic is the new band from Noah of Hooray for Earth whose debut album came out not too long ago on Sub Pop. They play tonight with winsome headliners Jack & Eliza.

Theories, False, Immortal Bird, Anicon @ The Acheron
Our metal sister site Invisible Oranges is proudly presenting the Theories/Immortal Bird tour, which is a nice double bill of grind and death-y hardcore, respectively. This show is also a double dose of black metal from Minneapolis’ False and locals Anicon.

No One & The Somebodies, The Soupcans, Sic Tic, No Ice, Rats Mouth, Law$uits @ The Gutter (Northside Fest)
Among other things, this bill is a chance to catch the ripping Toronto noise punks Th Soupcans in NYC.

For all of tonight’s shows, and tomorrow’s, check out our NYC concert calendar.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.
