Bambara at Music Hall of Williamsburg
Bambara at MHOW in 2017 (more by Em Grey)

What's going on Friday?

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Ulver @ Irving Plaza
Norway’s Ulver have touched on everything from black metal to trip-hop to synthpop in their 25 year career, but they’ve never played in the US… until now. They made their Stateside debut at Irving Plaza last night and they’re playing there again tonight.

KISS @ NYCB Live (Nassau Coliseum)
KISS are saying goodbye (again), and while there’s no Ace Frehley or Peter Criss on this run, there is just about everything else you could ask for: pyrotechnics, costumes, ridiculous props, and tons of hits. The tour hits Nassau Coliseum tonight, MSG on 3/27, Prudential Center on 8/14, and Barclays Center on 8/20.

Jose Gonzalez w/ String Theory @ Apollo Theater
Catching Jose Gonzalez backed by an orchestral ensemble sounds like a nice way to spend an evening. It’s their second of two nights at The Apollo.

Gary Clark Jr. @ Beacon Theatre
Singer, songwriter and guitar great Gary Clark Jr just released his new album This Land and continues his three-show Beacon run tonight.

Torres, Annie Hart @ Le Poisson Rouge
No word yet on a followup to 2017’s very good Three Futures, but Torres has been dropping singles here and there lately, and playing some shows, including this NYC gig tonight. Au Revoir Simone’s Annie Hart opens.

Flohio @ Baby’s All Right
UK rapper Flohio has been on the rise, having released her Wild Yout EP and a son with Modeselektor last fall, and then making BBC’s Sound of 2019 longlist. She was just at SXSW and now she’s stopping in NYC tonight.

T-Pain, Abby Jasmine @ Playstation Theater
T-Pain got a reappraisal a few years back after showing off how fantastic his voice is without auto-tune in an NPR Tiny Desk Concert, and he later capitalized on that by going on a Tiny Desk-inspired acoustic tour. He returned to the sound of his early singles on this year’s 1UP though, and he’s now supporting that album on tour.

Weakened Friends, Nervous Dater, Coping Skills, Hit Like A Girl @ The Kingsland
Portland, Maine’s Weakened Friends released their debut album Common Blah on Don Giovanni last year, which is a super catchy record of crunchy, Weezer-y power pop that features J Mascis on a song. Their live show was one of the best things we saw at SXSW last week, so we recommend catching them in NYC tonight. Locals Nervous Dater make for well-matched support.

Homeshake, Pink Siifu, Yves Jarvis @ Brooklyn Steel
Canadian dreampop artists and Spotify playlist regulars Homeshake play their biggest NYC show to date. If you’re going tonight, get there early to check out rapper Pink Siifu and Montreal’s Yves Jarvis.

Cochemea ft. Innov Gnawa @ Nublu
Cochemea Gastelum was a longtime saxphonist in Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, and he also makes spiritual jazz on his own, simply as Cochemea. He recently released his new album All My Relations on Daptone, and he celebrates that album tonight. He’ll be joined by Innov Gnawa, which should be very cool.

Jose James celebrates Bill Withers @ Iridium (two shows)
Neo-soul great Jose James is no stranger to tribute shows and albums, and this week he’s doing a run of shows at the Iridium paying tribute to soul legend Bill Withers.

Bambara, David Vassalotti, Horoscope, Flasyd @ Alphaville
Having released the great A Shadow on Everything last year, and recently wowing us at SXSW, Bambara play this homecoming show tonight.

Yuka C. Honda’s “No Revenge Necessary” @ National Sawdust
Cibo Matto’s Yuka C. Honda wrote this multimedia opera featuring Greg Fox, YoshimiO, Nels Cline and more.

Miho Hatori: Salon Mondialité @ The Kitchen
Meanwhile, Honda’s former bandmate Miho Hatori presents Salon Mondialité, an “imaginary, experimental TV talk show. Instead of conversations, Hatori creates sound stories through improvisation and ambient chanting.”

John Cooper Clarke @ Joe’s Pub
Salford, UK’s legendary punk poet, Dr. John Cooper Clarke, returns to Joe’s Pub for a night of prose, profanity and more.

Dark Tea, Public Practice, Spirit Was @ Union Pool
Dark Tea is the project of Gary Canino, who also plays in Brooklyn’s Rips, and his debut album, fully of lightly psychedelic folk-pop, is out today and features guest appearances from Hand Habits and more.  Tonight’s the release show and with Public Practice on the bill it makes a nice night out.

Dan Licata, Joe Pera @ Union Hall (two shows)
With some help from Jo Firestone, Dan Licata and Joe Pera present “Dan + Joe DVD Show: Special Features” with them each doing “their ‘Apocalypse Now: Redux’ sets (203 min. long).” Given tonight’s back to back shows are only 150 minutes apart, you may get something entirely different.

For all of tonight’s shows, and tomorrow’s, check out our NYC concert calendar.
