Baroness, Deafheaven, Zeal and Ardor @ Terminal 5
Baroness and Deafheaven are two of the biggest and best crossover metal bands around, and tonight their co-headlining tour wraps up in NYC. Deafheaven released their great new album Ordinary Corrupt Human Love last year (and the single “Black Brick” this year), and Baroness are gearing up to release their new album Gold & Grey. Rising band Zeal & Ardor provides well-matched support. Tickets for this all-around great bill are still available.
“Soundtrack of America” w/ Cory Henry, Melanie Faye, OSHUN, Sy Smith, Terrace Martin @ The Shed
“Soundtrack of America,” “a five-night concert series celebrating the influence of African American music with a new generation of groundbreaking artists,” continues at new NYC multi-arts center The Shed tonight with NYC neo-soul OSHUN, Kendrick Lamar collaborator and jazz musician Terrace Martin, and more.
Touche Amore, Pianos Become The Teeth, Soul Glo @ Brooklyn Bazaar
Post-hardcore fans, get ready to party like it’s 2009/2010. Touche Amore are playing their ’09 debut …To The Beat of a Dead Horse on this tour, and along for the ride are their old pals Pianos Become the Teeth, who are playing an all-heavy set of songs from their first two screamo-inspired albums, 2010’s Old Pride and 2011’s The Lack Long After. Comparatively newer band Soul Glo provides well-matched support. This is their second of two Brooklyn shows this week.
Leonard Cohen (A Crack In Everything) @ The Jewish Museum
Multimedia exhibition ‘Leonard Cohen: A Crack in Everything’ is on an international tour, and its NYC stop at The Jewish Museum opens today
Caetano Veloso @ BAM: Brooklyn Academy of Music
Tropicalia great Caetano Veloso is joined by his three sons—Moreno, Zeca, and Tom—for a very special all-in-the-family two-night stand at BAM.
Foals, Preoccupations, Omni @ Brooklyn Steel
Swinging from jerky post-punk to sweeping anthems (and sometimes swinging from the rafters), Foals have a busy year with two albums due, the first of which is out now. If you like their jerky post-punk side, you’ll definitely want to get there early for both openers: Canadian band Preoccupations and Atlanta trio Omni.
Of Montreal, Yip Deceiver @ Elsewhere
Quirky, theatrical and poppy, Of Montreal have been doing it there way for well over 25 years.
Single Mothers, Rebuilder, Crushed @ Knitting Factory
Single Mothers released their very ripping album Through A Wall last year, and as good as it is, their live show is even better.
Uada, Simmara, Wormwitch, Suffering Hour @ Saint Vitus
Portland black metallers Uada and Canadian blackened thrashers Wormwitch are on the road supporting their new-ish albums, and tonight that great double bill hits Brooklyn with Iceland’s Sinmara and Minneapolis’ Suffering Hour.
Trey Anastasio @ United Palace Theatre
Before Phish head out on their summer tour, Trey is doing his own shows including back-to-back sold-out shows at United Palace tonight and tomorrow.
Dream Theater @ Beacon Theatre
Prog metal vets Dream Theater are on the road celebrating their new album Distance Over Time, as well as the 20th anniversary of 1999’s Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory.
The Alarm @ Gramercy Theatre
Led by Mike Peters, The Alarm have been making stirring, anthemic rock since the early ’80s, with such classics as “The Stand,” “68 Guns,” “Strength” and “Sold Me Down the River.”
The Figgs @ Mercury Lounge
The Figgs have been creating great power pop — steeped in the tradition ofThe Replacements, Cheap Trick and Elvis Costello — for two decades now, with no signs of stopping any time soon. They’ll play two sets at this early show.
Eric Copeland (of Black Dice), Bunny Michael, Hairbone, Reaches, Robot Death @ Secret Project Robot
Secret Project Robot is moving out of its current space at the end of the month and is throwing a few farewell shows with some of their favorite people: tonight being Black Dice’s Eric Copeland, performance artist Bunny Michael and more.
Dave Davies (of The Kinks) @ Society for Ethical Culture
We’re still holding out just a little hope that he and his brother Ray will patch things up, but in the meantime The Kinks’ Dave Davies plays this solo show tonight.
John Prine, Courtney Marie Andrews @ The Capitol Theatre
The great John Prine released The Tree of Forgiveness last year, which was his first album of original material in over a decade, and he swings through the NYC area one more time.
Tinder Live! with Lane Moore, Aparna Nancherla, Sally Kohn and Ariel Dumas @ Littlefield
This popular comedy show invites singles to swipe right and let comedians (including, tonight, Aparna Nancherla) punch up their IMs with potential suitors live in front of an audience.
