The Specials, L.A. Salami @ Brooklyn Steel
2-Tone ska icons The Specials have been back as a band for a few years now but finally decided to make a third album, Encore, which was also their first in almost 30 years. An even bigger surprise: it’s very good! Expect to hear a few of those interspersed among classics like “Nite Klub,” “A Message to You Rudy,” “Stereotype,” and “Ghost Town.”
Real Estate, Palm @ Webster Hall
Real Estate are teasing their anticipated follow-up to 2017’s In Mind, and we hear they’ll be playing new music and debuting a new light show.
Baroness @ Rough Trade (acoustic in-store)
Baroness’ new album Gold & Grey is out today, and in addition to their usual sludgy rock songs, it’s got some quiet acoustic numbers too. To celebrate the release, the band is doing a few acoustic in-stores, including this one in Brooklyn tonight.
Blonde Redhead, Ludovic Alarie @ Industry City
Noise rock-turned-dream pop NYC vets Blonde Redhead have long been one of the city’s best bands, and their mind-numbing live show is always worth catching.
Gang Gang Dance, Ana Roxanne @ First Unitarian Congregational Society
Part of the annual bicycle film festival, Gang Gang Dance play their second of two nights at First Unitarian Congregational Society. They’ll be backed by a chamber ensemble and multimedia projections.
Choking Victim, The Pist, All Torn Up, Trashy, Eve Minor @ Market Hotel
NYC ska-punk vets Choking Victim’s shows are few and far between these days, so any chance to see them is a real treat. They’re doing two nights at Market Hotel this weekend. This is the first with back-in-action punks The Pist and more.
Swamp Dogg @ Le Poisson Rouge
Cult R&B singer Swamp Dogg heads to LPR for an intimate show behind 2018’s Love, Loss, and Auto-Tune.
Full of Hell, Primitive Man, Genocide Pact, Elizabeth Colour Wheel, Limbs Bin @ Brooklyn Bazaar
Grind/noise/etc band Full of Hell’s great new album Weeping Choir is an ambitious, genre-defying album and one of the best of its kind in recent memory. They headline this show, which is a great, diverse bill all around with sludge from Primitive Man, death metal from Genocide Pact, shoegazy goth from Elizabeth Colour Wheel, and noise from Limbs Bin.
Church of Misery, The Atomic Bitchwax, Toke @ Saint Vitus @ Saint Vitus
Tokyo doom vets Church of Misery are back in the US and hitting Brooklyn’s Saint Vitus tonight and tomorrow. The Atomic Bitchwax and Toke make for well-matched support and a solid bill all around.
Sinkane, Bassel and The Supernaturals @ Elsewhere
Sinkane’s new album Dépaysé is a lively record rooted in funky sounds from all over the globe, and it’s a powerful, political album for these trying times but also an album that sounds genuinely fun. Sinkane’s live shows are always fun too.
Ignite @ The Kingsland
Orange County melodic hardcore vets Ignite have been going strong since the early ’90s, and they’re bringing their sure-to-be-wild live show to Brooklyn tonight.
Perry Farrell’s Kind Heaven Orchestra @ City Winery
Perry Farrell just released his first solo album in 18 years, Kind Heaven, which is also the name of this new Las Vegas hotel and entertainment destination… so expect a little razzle dazzle.
Tournament, Aneurysm, Bad Bone, Willful Boys @ Brooklyn Bazaar
NYC punky hard rockers Tournament are calling it quits, but first they released a new album today and they’re celebrating it at this hometown show.
The Jayhawks @ White Eagle Hall
Minneapolis’ The Jayhawks helped spearhead the new Americana movement of the ’90s and, two decades and nine albums on, their sound can now simply be described as classic.
Halo Maud @ The Owl
Maud Nadal was in Parisian bands Melody’s Echo Chamber and Moodoid before going out on her own as Halo Maud. Her 2018 debut album mixes breathy French pop with psych and krautrock, and her voice at times may have you thinking of Bjork.
The Darling Fire, Dead Swords, Ultra Major @ Arlene’s Grocery
The Darling Fire is the new band from Jolie Lindholm, who used to front The Rocking Horse Winner and sang on the first two Dashboard Confessional albums, and the band’s lineup also includes Jolie’s former Rocking Horse Winner bandmate Jeronimo Gomez (also of Poison The Well and As Friends Rust), as well as former members of Further Seems Forever, Shai Hulud, Strongarm, and more. They’re playing two shows at NYC’s Arlene’s Grocery this weekend. This is the first, and it’s with shoegazy Gaslight Anthem offshoot Dead Swords.
Kim Petras, Mazurbate @ Irving Plaza
Singer Kim Petras makes infectious synthpop filled with big, memorable choruses, which should make for a very fun live show. Her stop at Irving Plaza tonight is her biggest NYC headlining show to date.
Aziz Ansari @ Radio City Music Hall
After several stops at BAM earlier this year, comedian Aziz Ansari heads to the much larger Radio City tonight as part of his “Road To Nowhere” tour.
Honduras, Datenight, Bloom @ Gran Torino
Brooklyn band Honduras inject a little mid-’90s Britpop into their Strokes-y garage rock sound.
Ellie Goulding @ Central Park Rumsey Playfield
Speaking of pop artists, UK-based singer Ellie Goulding plays Central Park this morning as part of Good Morning America‘s free summer concert series. 6 AM doors, just so you know.
