Makaya McCraven Universal Beings

What's going on Friday?

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Makaya McCraven, L’Rain @ Industry City
Drummer, producer, and “beat scientist” Makaya McCraven’s Universal Beings was one of the best jazz albums of last year, and it was the kind that you don’t need to have a jazz degree to appreciate; Makaya pulled influence from guys like Madlib and Flying Lotus as much as he pulled influence from Miles Davis.

Joyce Manor, Saves The Day, awakebutstillinbed @ Webster Hall
Joyce Manor have established themselves as one of the best bands in the recent indie/emo/punk wave and Saves The Day were one of the best bands in the late ’90s/early ’00s wave of the genre(s), so this tour is a perfectly matched multi-generational pairing. Making it even better is indie-screamo group awakebutstillinbed, who are one of the more promising new bands in the scene.

The Catenary Wires, Pale Lights, Jeanines @ Berlin
Rob Pursey and Amelia Fletcher are indiepop royalty, having been in such beloved bands as Talulah Gosh, Heavenly, Tender Trap, Marine Research and, these days, The Catenary Wires. The duo released their second album, Til The Morning, in June and are making a rare Stateside visit. This is a great triple bill of indiepop with Slumberland-signed Jeanines, and Pale Lights (which includes members of Comet Gain and Ladybug Transistor).

Devon Welsh (of Majical Cloudz), Rachika S @ Union Pool
Former Majical Cloudz vocalist Devon Welsh will release his second solo album,  True Love, in October and will be previewing some of that material tonight.

Off With Their Heads, Single Mothers, Weird Skin @ The Kingsland
Minneapolis punks Off With Their Heads’ new album Be Good is out today on Epitaph, and they’ll celebrate the release in Brooklyn at The Kingsland. It’s part of their tour with Canadian punk rippers Single Mothers, and that’s a killer double bill.

The Slackers @ Rocks Off Concert Cruises
NYC ska icons The Slackers have been going strong since the early ’90s, and tonight they grace their hometown with a show on a boat.

Lil TJay, Casanova, Flipp Dinero, Jay Gwuapo, 22Gz @ Gramercy Theatre
Tonight, Gramercy Theatre hosts ‘Hometown Heroes Live’ featuring a lineup loaded with rising NYC rappers.

Zakk Sabbath, Don Jamieson @ Warsaw
Zakk Wylde has been Ozzy Osbourne’s guitarist for a while, so it makes sense that he’s familiar enough with the Black Sabbath catalog to have a worthy Sabbath cover band. Their tour hits Brooklyn tonight.

Wild Fest w/ Kill Your Idols, Beyond, Overthrow, Rule Them All, Outskirts, The Fight, Sub Space, 64, Flesh Prison @ Amityville Music Hall
Long Island’s Wild Fest is an annual benefit for the family of the late Long Island punk scene staple (and Iron Chic member) Rob Mcallister, and as usual, this year’s lineup includes tons of bands (mostly) from the Long Island scene, from reunited vets to up-and-comers. It goes down today and tomorrow.

The Shacks, Holy Hive, Danny Akalepse @ C’mon Everybody
Local dream posters The Shacks and their soulful labelmates Holy Hive share a hometown bill tonight.

Jacuzzi Boys, Sahd Wyte Guyz @ The Broadway
Florida garage punks Jacuzzi Boys might be a great reason to check out new Bushwick club The Broadway.

Sloppy Jane, Cumgirl8, Jazzboy, Sugarlife @ The Glove
The unforgettable Sloppy Jane will make The Glove’s final month of shows all the more memorable. They also play Baby’s All Right on Saturday.

The Cynics, Electric Mess, The Elevator Operators @ Gran Torino
Still led by Gregg Kostelich, Pittsburgh garage rock legends The Cynics have been together for 35 years.

Chance The Rapper @ Central Park Rumsey Playfield (Good Morning America)
If you feel like getting to Central Park at like 6 AM, you can see Chance the Rapper perform for Good Morning America. It’s his first time playing NYC since releasing his new album The Big Day (and he’ll be back for proper shows in the area this fall).
