What's going on Friday?

Paul Simon

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Paul Simon @ Forest Hills Stadium
Paul Simon’s new album Stranger to Stranger is his best in a long time, which makes it even more exciting than usual to see him live. But new stuff aside, he’s sure to load his set with favorites from Simon & Garfunkel and his very fruitful solo career. This is the second of two nights at Forest Hills Stadium, Paul’s first time at the Queens venue since 1970.

Prefuse 73, Brian Degraw (DJ Set), EU1OGY, Arto Lindsay, Zs, Loren Connors, Excepter (DJ Set) @ Knockdown Center
The You Are Here Fest (aka The Maze aka The Trouble Maze), a performance festival in a sculptural maze installation, continues today with an intergenerational bill of noise/no wave practitioners.

Beverly, Las Rosas, Haybaby, Dumb Wolves @ Rough Trade
Beverly’s new album, The Blue Swell owes equal parts to ’90s indie rock and nostalgic peeks at the early ’60s. It’s a terrific record and they’re great live too. They’re just back from a tour with Flowers.

King Missile, Gold, Wooing @ Union Hall – Brooklyn
John S. Hall has fronted some version of King Missile since 1986, with beginnings in the weird world of the Shimmy Disc scene, through an unlikely signing with Atlantic Records (and an unlikelier “hit with “Detachable Penis”) and back into more obscure confines. Through it, Hall hasn’t changed what he does, observational, funny lyrics over various permutations of rock backing.

Dalek, the austerity program, Action Beat (UK, feat. GW Sok of THE EX), Opening Bell @ The Acheron
dälek are the great industrial rap group who were arguably a little ahead of their time when they formed in the late ’90s. But now in a post-Yeezus/Death Grips/Run the Jewels world, they fit right in. This year’s Asphalt for Eden (their first album since 2009) is very good.

Dragged Into Sunlight, Primitive Man, Cult Leader, Churchburn @ The Bell House
Uniquely brutal UK doom band (and semi-legendary live act) Dragged Into Sunlight are stateside and joined by the bludgeoning local depression-mongerers in Primitive Man and the mathy, furious post-Gaza hardcore outfit Cult Leader tonight.

Signals Midwest, Katie Ellen, Broadcaster, Couple Hundo @ Suburbia
Signals Midwest have a new Evan Weiss-produced album on the way via Tiny Engines, due out this September. First they’ve got some shows, including NYC with a few solid local bands.

Paul de Jong (of The Books) @ Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2
Last year Paul de Jong released IF, which is pretty in line with The Books’ classic material, with modern classical arrangements, glitch, and spoken word samples. Tonight’s his second of two NYC shows this weekend.

Silent Servant, Xeno & Oaklander, Stallone The Reducer, Alex From Queens, Analog Soul, Jake Reif, SSPS @ Good Room
This is a special edition of synthwave/minimal wave danceparty Capriccio with live sets from Xeno & Oaklander (who have a new album out) and more.

Impractical Jokers “Santiago Sent Us” Tour Starring The Tenderloins @ Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk
It’s the first night of the brand new Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk, which is probably more notably than who is actually playing. This weekend also hosts Sting/Peter Gabriel on Sunday, and the Mike Love-led Beach Boys on July 4.

Phish @ Saratoga Performing Arts Center
Some people like to use July 4th weekend to get away, and perhaps for the hippies among us, that means heading upstate and catching Phish’s 3-night run in Saratoga Springs. It runs from tonight through Sunday.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.
