What's going on Friday?

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

NYC Winter Jazzfest Manhattan Marathon
The NYC Winter Jazzfest expanded to two marathon weekends at venues all over Manhattan and Brooklyn. This is the first night of the first weekend and options include Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog and Jamie Branch at The Dance; Nasheet Waits at Zinc Bar; Hailu Mergia at SOB’s; Sunny Jain and Ikebe Shakedown at Mercury Lounge; Nate Wooley, Mary Lattimore, Halvorson + Dietrich and more at Nublu; Makaya McCraven at Webster Hall; Theo Bleckmann’s Mixtape at Subculture; and more.

Slick Rick, Intelligenz @ Brooklyn Bowl
Like he’s been doing for nearly a decade, Slick Rick heads to Brooklyn Bowl for his annual birthday show in NYC, where he’s been known to bring out a surprise guest or two. Support comes from Chicago rapper Intelligenz, who also opened last year’s show.

Sacrifice, Toxic Holocaust, Devil Master @ Market Hotel
Japanese thrash vets Sacrifice initially were together from 1985 to 1992, reunited in 2013, and now they’ll head to Brooklyn’s Market Hotel for a pair of dates, marking their first-ever US shows. This is night one, which has support from thrash vets Toxic Holocaust and Philly-based Devil Master.

Aura Blackstar: Bowie Cello Symphonic Visualized @ Brookfield Place
in honor of David Bowie, who died four years ago today, acclaimed cellist Maya Beiser plays this free performance reimagining his final album, Blackstar. It’s the debut live performance of her upcoming album, Bowie Cello Symphonic: Blackstar, which is also out today.

Motion City Soundtrack @ Starland Ballroom
Motion City Soundtrack finally ended their three-plus-year hiatus with a New Year’s Eve show in Chicago, and now they’re in the midst of their first major tour since 2016. After playing NYC earlier this week, they’re heading down to NJ tonight.

Emily Ritz, Anna Fox, Scout Gillett, Katy Rea @ The Broadway
We’re sad that Quilt appear to be on hiatus, but singer Anna Fox debuts her new band tonight.

The Wants, Beeef, Gift @ Berlin
Brooklyn trio The Wants, which includes Bodega members Madison Velding-VanDam and Heather Elle, make taut, danceable post-punk and just announced their debut album.

Oh, Such A HUGE Show, Oh!: A Benefit for The Innocence Project @ The Bell House
Hosts Ethan Beach and Josh Nasser are bringing the “Oh, Such A HUGE Show, Oh!” benefit comedy show to The Bell House one last time, which supports The Innocence Project, an organization dedicated to exonerating the wrongfully convicted. Guests include Megan Stalter, Taylor Garron, Eva Victor, Larry Owens, Dan Licata, Conner O’Malley, and SNL’s Ego Nwodim.

Wicked Willow, Priestess, ZZZwalk @ TV EYE
If you haven’t checked out new Bushwick/Ridgewood venue TV Eye — whose owners include Jonathan Toubin, Sacred Bones Caleb Braaten, former Maxwell’s booker Todd Abramson and Bowery Ballroom founder Michael Swier — this lineup of riff-rocking locals might make for a good excuse.

Trey Anastasio Band @ The Capitol Theatre
Trey Anastasio recently kept busy in NYC during Phish’s annual New Year’s Eve run at MSG, and he’ll begin his own two-night run at Port Chester’s The Cap tonight.

Jerry Seinfeld @ Beacon Theatre (two shows)
He may be mega-rich off reruns but Jerry Seinfeld still loves doing comedy and does so once a month at Beacon Theatre. Two shows tonight.

You can also find quality entertainment on almost any night of the week at: Barbès bar and performance space in Park Slope, LunÀtico in Bed Stuy, Nublu in the East Village, Blue Note jazz club in the West Village, The Stone in multiple locations, Comedy Cellar in the West Village, and Q.E.D. comedy club in Astoria.
