What’s going on Friday?
You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…
Opeth, Graveyard @ Apollo Theater
Prog metal vets Opeth will grace Harlem’s iconic Apollo Theater in support of their 2019 album In Cauda Venenum. Their Zeppelin-esque Swedish neighbors Graveyard open.
Bush Tetras (40th Anniversary Show), 75 Dollar Bill @ (le) poisson rouge
Still battling too many creeps, NYC post-punk/downtown icons Bush Tetras celebrate their 40th anniversary tonight.
Man or Astro-Man?, Monograms, Tim Harrington (DJ) @ Market Hotel
The Brainiac Documentary, Transmissions After Zero, is now out on video and to celebrate sci-fi garage rock greats Man or Astro-Man? headline this party.
Drive-By Truckers, Buffalo Nichols @ Webster Hall
like 2016’s American Band, Drive-By Truckers‘ new album, The Unravelling, is a fiery polemic about the state of our country (and the world). Given the election year, tonight’s show should prove extra fiery.
The Black Lips, Warish, Sweet Joey’s Thing of Beauty @ Asbury Lanes
Garage rock provocateurs Black Lips released their new LP Sing In A World That’s Falling Apart earlier this year which found them dipping a toe or two into country. Expect a roundy night.
Gold Dime, Shahzad Ismaily @ Roulette
Part of Roulette’s Mixology Festival 2020: Psychedelia , this showfeatures Gold Dime (aka Andrya Ambro of Talk Normal) as well as musical polymath Shahzad Ismaily, both playing to some trippy visuals and more.
Black Sabbath Cover Band Rehearsals (Members of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol, Krallice, Ex-Eye, and ex-Dirty Projectors lead all you Children of the Grave Into the Void) @ Saint Vitus
This all-star Black Sabbath cover band got their start at Justin Vernon’s PEOPLE festival in Berlin and they had so much fun they’ve continued to do it when all the members are in town. It may be for fun, but they deliver killer versions of Sabbath classics and Angel Deradoorian can really belt it out. Worth it.
John Zorn’s SIMULACRUM @ The Sultan Room
John Zorn’s “extreme organ trio” Simulacrum — John Medeski (organ), Matt Hollenberg (guitar), and Kenny Grohowski (drums) — mix metal, jazz, punk and more. Sold out.
Howlin’ Rain, Sunwatchers @ Union Pool
West Coast psych band and lovers of ’70s rock Howlin’ Rain play tonight with NYC’s own political jazz-punk combo Sunwatchers.
Lucero, Jade Jackson @ White Eagle Hall
Alt-country/punk vets Lucero are true lifers and their live show is always a great time. Tonight should be no different.
Bill Frisell Duo w/ Ambrose Akinmusire @ Blue Note Jazz Club
Jazz guitar great Bill Frisell is in the midst of some shows at the Blue Note, and tonight he’s doing 8 and 10:30 PM duo sets with trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, who deservedly had a breakthrough with 2018’s Mivos Quartet and Kool AD-featuring Origami Harvest. Ambrose joins Bill at tomorrow’s shows as well.
You can also find quality entertainment on almost any night of the week at: Barbès bar and performance space in Park Slope, LunÀtico in Bed Stuy, Nublu in the East Village, Blue Note jazz club in the West Village, The Stone in multiple locations, Comedy Cellar in the West Village, and Q.E.D. comedy club in Astoria.
