Drive Like Jehu at Primavera Sound
Drive Like Jehu at Primavera Sound (more by Chris Graham)

What's going on Friday?

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Drive Like Jehu, The Jay Vons, Hurry Up @ Irving Plaza (BrooklynVegan Presents)
While members of Drive Like Jehu are rarely not active, the highly-influential post-hardcore band remained inactive since breaking up in 1995. They got back together not long ago for some killer shows, and tonight’s their second of two shows in NYC. BrooklynVegan proudly presents this one.

Cracker @ City Winery
After spending the ’80s in the college radio underground with Camper Van Beethoven, David Lowery hit alt-rock paydirt with Cracker who had a number of big hits, including “Low” and “Euro-Trash Girl.” We wouldn’t be surprised if tonight’s set featured a few CVB songs too.

TEEN, Softspot, Laser Background @ Mercury Lounge
TEEN’s new album Love Yes found the sweet spot between their arty and R&B sides, making for fun, inventive pop. They were just great at Northside Fest, and this show is on the early side (they’re on at 9 PM). Recommended.

Dr. Dog, The Knights @ Prospect Park
The free shows at Prospect Park continue and tonight there’s a pretty big one, with Philly rock lifers Dr. Dog headlining.

The Bronx @ Rocks Off Concert Cruises
The Bronx’s mariachi alter-egos Mariachi El Bronx went on a Rocks Off Cruise earlier this week, and tonight the band will stick to their anthemic punk side.

Kool & the Gang, Bootsy Collins, Morris Day & The Time, Doug E. Fresh @ The Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk
This lineup is pretty cool all around, with funk/disco hitmakers Kool & the Gang headlining, plus Parliament-Funkadelic member Bootsy Collins, Prince associates Morris Day and the Time, and old school rapper Doug E. Fresh.

Yes @ The Capitol Theatre
Prog rock vets Yes, which currently features guitarist Steve Howe, drummer Alan White, keyboardist Geoff Downes and bassist Billy Sherwood and singer Jon Davison in the lineup (no original members), play Staten Island tonight.

A Fundraiser for Black Lives Matter: Love Conquers All ft. Prince Paul, Jean Grae, Grand Wizzard Theodore, Heems & more @ Friends and Lovers
This show is for a great cause and it’s got an eclectic lineup with New York hip hop vets Prince Paul and Grand Wizzard Theodore, plus newer-comers like Jean Grae and Heems, and a lot more. More details and tickets here.

Slick Rick @ Tropical Paradise
Another veteran rap option in NYC tonight is Slick Rick at Tropical Paradise (1367 Utica Ave). Go here for more details.
