Shaky Knees Festival Day 1
The Kills at Shaky Knees 2016 (more by Benjamin Adams)

What's going on Friday?

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Explosions in the Sky, Destroyer @ Kings Theatre
Long-running post-rockers Explosions in the Sky returned earlier this year with Wilderness, which has the band in fine form. Recent live shows prove they’re still mesmerizing on stage too. This show is doubly cool because of its opening solo set by Destroyer (aka Dan Bejar), who’s previewing new music on his current tour.

The Kills, LA Witch @ Terminal 5
The Yank/Brit duo of Alison Mosshart and guitarist Jamie Hince just relased new LP Ash & Fire which keeps their stomping rock sound aflame.

Devendra Banhart, Rogov @ Rough Trade
Devendra Banhart will release Ape in Pink Marble on September 23 via Nonesuch. As with 2012’s Maia, he made this one in L.A. with Noah Georgeson and Josiah Steinbrick. He’ll play the whole think tonight.

Adele @ MSG
Adele’s music brings people of all ages together like few popular singers do right now. For six nights this week, she’ll do just that at Madison Square Garden. This is night 4.

Peter Hook & The Light @ Webster Hall
While he doesn’t seem to be able to stand his former New Order/Joy Division bandmates, Peter Hook has no problem playing the songs with his band The Light (that includes David Potts who sang in Hook’s band Monaco). Tonight they’ll perform both the Joy Division and New Order versions of ‘Substance’ in full.

Yeasayer @ Secret Location
Yeasayer returned earlier this year with their fourth album, Amen & Goodbye, which is the first time since their still-great debut that they ignored current trends. It’s a cool record, and tonight they play a “secret” show.

Princess (ft. Maya Rudolph) @ Brooklyn Bowl
Princess, aka the Prince tribute act fronted by Maya Rudolph and Gretchen Lieberum, have been paying awesome homage to the Purple One for a few years now. Maya and Gretchen put Princess back in action this year before Prince’s death and this should be a very fun tribute to him.

Public Access TV, TV Baby @ Mercury Lounge
We are really hoping for a supergroup encore of Public Access TV Baby.

Lucius, JD McPherson, Big Thief @ Central Park SummerStage
Lucius bring their harmony-driven sound to Central Park tonight. If you’re going to this show, we recommend showing up early for the Saddle Creek-signed indie rockers Big Thief.

Alex Cameron, Rubber Band Gun @ Aviv
Australian artist Alex Cameron recently released his debut LP on Secretly Canadian, which pulls from a handful of late ’70s/’80s influences like Nick Cave, Springsteen, Suicide, and more. His quirky stage presence makes his live show worth catching. (This show was moved from Baby’s All Right.)

Funebrarum, Pissgrave, Toxicology @ Sunnyvale
It’s an all death metal lineup at Sunnyvale tonight, with long-running NJ greats Funebrarum, plus two newer bands: Philly’s Pissgrave (makers of one of 2015’s better DM albums) and NJ’s Toxicology.

Ace Frehley, Simo @ Playstation Theater
We’re not really sure what this show will be like, but we figured you had to know that the KISS guitarist was playing NYC tonight.

Black Uhuru @ BB King’s
Guess who’s coming to dinner? Natty dreadlocks, of course, as reggae legends Black Uhuru playing.
