What’s going on Friday?

Jeff Rosenstock at Rough Trade, 2015 (more by Ryan Muir)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Woods @ Sunnyvale
This is a small show for Woods — who released the great Sun City Eater in the River of Light last year — and it’s a benefit for the ACLU.

Dave Harrington, Kenny Wollesen, Cochon de Lait @ Sunnyvale
Stick around Sunnyvale after the Woods show and catch Darkside’s Dave Harrington playing with drummer Kenny Wollesen.

Delicate Steve, EZTV, Annie Hart @ Bowery Ballroom
Very talented guitarist Delicate Steve just released the defining This Is Steve last week and celebrates tonight with janglepop combo EZTV and Au Revoir Simone’s Annie Hart.

Dev Hynes @ Whitney Museum
Blood Orange’s Hynes will be performing his score for Easternsports, the “multisensory installation” by artists Alex Da Corte and Jayson Musson that is currently on view as part of the Whitney’s “Dreamlands: Immersive Cinema and Art, 1905-2016.” Hynes will be performing in the room designed by De Corte, creating a “synthesis of color, light, scent, spoken word, and music.”

Josh Ritter, Julie Byrne @ City Winery NYC
Josh is working on the follow-up to 2015’s Sermon on the Rocks and will be trying out new songs at this show. Opening is the very talented Julie Byrne who’s new album is fresh out via Bada Bing.

Jeff Rosenstock, Ben Hopkins (of PWR BTTM), Cameron Boucher (of Sorority Noise), Eskimeaux, special guests @ The Gateway
This is a pretty amazing lineup of indie/punk artists all coming together at this intimate venue to raise money for CAIR, in the wake of Trump’s recent Muslim ban.

Aluk Todolo, Uada, Dispirit, Blood Incantation, Sanguine Eagle @ Saint Vitus
This is the second day of the four-day metal festival Stardust at Saint Vitus, and it might be the most exciting one. It’s headlined by Aluk Todolo, who are more of a heavy psychedelic rock band than a metal band. There’s also Uada (who now have members in Pillorian, Agalloch vocalist John Haughm’s new band), and death metal boundary pushers Blood Incantation, who had one of the most beloved metal albums of last year.

AFI, Nothing, Souvenirs @ Terminal 5
While AFI’s recent stuff is kinda hit-or-miss, they had a pretty unstoppable run up through Sing the Sorrow and the classics still sound great live. Opening tonight’s show is punkgazers Nothing and emo newcomers Souvenirs.

Wiki, Cities Aviv, Bigg Dogg, Mike Yo Chill, Chip Skylark @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
The details seem shaky on whether or not the great NYC rap group Ratking are officially broken up or not, but Wiki, who’s maybe their most visible member, is continuing with his similarly great solo project. He graces his hometown tonight.

Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires, Peter Stampfel, Shellshag, Vacation, California X, Painted Zeros @ Knitting Factory Brooklyn
Like they do most years, NJ punk/indie label Don Giovanni is throwing a series of showcases this year. This is the second of two in Brooklyn, and there’s also one in Philly on Saturday. The lineup includes folk legend Peter Stampfel, eccentric local veterans Shellshag, pop punks Vacation, sludge-popsters California X, and more.

Breanna Barbara, Hideout, Helena Deland, Chillemi @ Our Wicked Lady
Last year, dark blues rocker Breanna Barbara released the very solid Mirage Dreams. She’s a regular on the NYC live show scene, and plays again tonight.

Brothers Macklovitch (A-Trak & Dave1), Prince Klassen, Dirtyfinger @ American Museum of Natural History
The American Museum of Natural History’s monthly One Step Beyond has a DJ performing in the museum’s Rose Center For Earth and Space and gives attendees a chance to “take a walk up the Cosmic Pathway to the Hayden Big Bang Theater where acclaimed actor Liam Neeson narrates a dynamic flight through the virtual universe based on an accurate cosmic atlas.” This month’s headline is Brothers Macklovitch, a collaboration between A-Trak and Chromeo’s Dave1.

Jay Prince @ Baby’s All Right
Last year, UK rapper Jay Prince made an appearance on Mura Masa’s Someday Somewhere EP and also released his own EP, Beautiful Mercy. He kinda sounds like the British Kendrick Lamar.

The Lumineers, Andrew Bird @ Madison Square Garden
If you’re going to MSG tonight for The Lumineers, do get their early for the very charming Andrew Bird who is a loop pedal wiz who makes magic with his violin, voice…and a little whistling.

The Plimsouls, The Grip Weeds, Los Dudes @ The Bowery Electric
Peter Case is not part of this “Resouled” lineup of the Plimsouls (best known for “A Million Miles Away”) but founding guitarist Eddie Munoz is.
