What's going on Friday?

sinkanel0

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Sinkane, The No BS! Brass Band @ Bowery Ballroom
Sinkane’s new album Life & Livin’ It is his best yet, diving fully into lively ’70s funk and putting his multi-cultural identity in the forefront. Tonight’s his first NYC show since its release.

Lemuria, Cayetana, Mikey Erg @ Brooklyn Bazaar
Long-running indie-punks Lemuria recently reissued their 2008 debut album Get Better, and now they’re on the road playing it in full. Both openers are great too. Cayetana just announced a new album, New Kind of Normal, and Mikey Erg is coming off a very strong 2016 album, Tentative Decisions.

Jamie Lidell @ The Appel Room
The American Songbook series continues tonight with soul revivalist Jamie Lidell. Jamie’s latest album is last year’s Building a Beginning.

Frank Turner And The Sleeping Souls, Arkells @ Beacon Theatre
British folk punk Frank Turner has been on a roll lately. He ended the tough 2016 with a cover of The Mountain Goats’ “This Year” and he kicked off this year with a song that takes on the next four years (“can’t I just spend the next four years at a punk show?”). Hopefully he’ll be that fired up at tonight’s show too (tickets still available).

Screaming Females, Spowder @ Monty Hall
New Jersey’s most shreddingest punks Screaming Females play two home state shows this weekend, this being the first. Their live shows are always a ton of fun, and tonight should be no different.

Ela Minus, Novelty Daughter, NOIA @ C’mon Everybody
NYC-via-Colombia artist Ela Minus recently toured with Austra, and her electronic pop was a great fit for that tour. She releases her new EP, Adapt., today.

Red Hot Chili Peppers, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, Jack Irons @ MSG
Anthony and Flea have been mixing punk and funk for well over 30 years and the Chili Peppers are still going strong…as witnessed by these three sold-out MSG shows. Opening the night is original RHCP drummer, Jack Irons.

People of the North, Octis, Kid Millions & Jan Werner duo @ Knockdown Center
Oneida/Man Forever drummer Kid Millions pulls double duty tonight, starting off the evening with a duo performance with Jan Werner, and then as one half of People of the North.

Future Punx, Big Bliss, Decorum @ “Excellent Dealz Loft”
This loft party is a benefit for Planned Parenthood with three fun, post-punk-leaning bands. More info here.

Leeway, Urban Waste, Truth & Rights, Enrage, The Donner Party @ Maxwell’s
Cool shows at Maxwell’s are fewer and farer between these days than they used to be (the venue is under new ownership), but here’s a cool one. Two bands from ’80s NYHC, Leeway and Urban Waste, are teaming up to play the Hoboken venue.

The Ohio Players @ BB King Blues Club
We just lost Junie Morrison, so one way to pay tribute might be to go see the band he cofounded tonight which still features original members James “Diamond” Williams (Drums), Clarence Willis (Lead Guitar) and Robert Kuumba(Percussion).

Rick Astley @ Webster Hall
We’re not Rickrolling you… Rick Astley is really playing Webster Hall tonight. If you’re wondering what the scene at this show will possibly be like, there’s only one way to find out…
