Napalm Death, Melvins, Melt Banana @ Webster Hall
Melvins are busy as usual this year, with their looong-in-the-making collaboration with godheadSilo’s Mike Kunka finally out, a new tour 7″, and an album with six different bassists on the way. Tonight’s their second of two NYC shows with grindcore legends Napalm Death (whose 2015 LP Apex Predator – Easy Meat ranks among the band’s best work) and Japanese noise rock staples Melt-Banana.
Pallbearer, Sannhet, Primitive Weapons @ Saint Vitus
Pallbearer set themselves apart from the masses of doom metal bands by writing songs that are genuinely catchy. This is their first of two NYC shows this week, and it’s a good bill all around.
Ween @ Terminal 5
After taking a few years off, Dean and Gene are back at it and play their second of three sold-out Terminal 5 shows tonight.
Diaspora Calling feat. Lauryn Hill, Machel Montano, Stephen ‘Ragga’ Marlye, Stonebwoy & more @ Kings Theatre
What started as just a Lauryn Hill concert has turned into the centerpiece of her ‘Diaspora Calling!’ festival featuring performers from around the world.
The Church @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
The veteran Australian alt-rock band return for more guitar heroics and pysch rock majesty.
Sarah Neufeld, Colin Stetson, Eartheater @ Le Poisson Rouge
Arcade Fire violinist Sarah Neufeld released her second solo album The Ridge which she’s supporting tonight with help from frequent collaborator and saxophonist Colin Stetson and Stefan Schneider on drums and electronics.
Alex G, Porches, Your Friend @ Bowery Ballroom
The all-Domino Records tour of chillwave revivalists Porches, slacker pop guy Alex G and dream pop band Your Friend hits NYC for their second sold-out NYC shows.
Dave Harrington, Susie Ibarra, Ikue Mori, Trevor Dunn & more @ Trans Pecos
Darkside’s Dave Harrington just released new solo album Become Alive and he’ll be performing it tonight.
Free Cake For Every Creature, Stephen Steinbrink, Florist, Trace Mountains, Addie Pray @ Silent Barn
It’s a very solid night of indiepop with Katie Bennett’s Philly twee folk project Free Cake For Every Creature, and the gorgeous pop of Stephen Steinbrink.
Jen Kirkman @ Bell House
Jen Kirkman celebrates the release of her new book, I Know What I’m Doing and Other Lies I Tell Myself, with a mix of stand-up, reading and an anything-goes Q&A session.
Mike Birbiglia @ The Lynn Redgrave Theater
Comedian Mike Birbiglia has been doing his show “Thank God for the Jokes” for nearly two years. He’s putting it to bed, but not before this run which was recently extended through May.
Wesley Stace’s Cabinet of Wonders feat. Robyn Hitchcock, Dave Hill, Eugene Mirman, Wreckless Eric and Loudon Wainwright III & more @ City Winery
A mix of comedy, literature and musc, Wesley Stace’s Cabinet of Wonders welcomes soon-to-be tourmates Robyn Hitchcock and Eugene Mirman, plus the great Wreckless Eric and Loudon Wainwright and friend-of-BV Dave Hill.
Unearth, Ringworm, Reflections, Culture Killer, Hollow Earth @ Santos Party House
Metallic hardcore greats Ringworm are still going strong, and their live shows still rip. Their latest album is 2014’s Hammer of the Witch.
MDC, Deathwish, All Torn Up, Opposition Rising @ Grand Victory
Portland, OR punk legends MDC haven’t put out new music in a while, but their old tunes live up super well. Their 1982 debut Millions of Dead Cops is a timeless classic.
Murder By Death, Kevin Devine and The Goddamn Band @ Irving Plaza
Murder by Death are currently on the road with varying openers. Tonight’s NYC show is with emo/indie singer/songwriter Kevin Devine. They also play here again next week with former Avail singer Tim Barry.
Ghost, The Shrine @ The Paramount
Ghost get lumped in with metal bands, but they’re more satanic in image than in music — kind of like a modern-day Blue Oyster Cult. Tonight’s their second of two NYC-area shows on this tour.
O’Brother, Frameworks, Big Jesus @ Rough Trade
Frameworks bring back the kind of screamo that originated in the late ’90s, and they find new ways to be creative with this two-decade-old sound.
La Misma, Sadist, Green Beret, Pure Disgust, Blood Pressure @ Palisades
Local hardcore band La Misma sing entirely in Portuguese and their shows are in-your-face and memorable.
Ajax, Impalers, S.H.I.T., Mirror, Triage @ The Acheron
While the great Power Trip are just about to play NYC, first drummer Chris Ulsh’s band Impalers play this show which has a good lineup all around.
Terrace Martin @ National Sawdust
Terrace Martin worked closely with Kendrick Lamar on both good kid, m.A.A.d city and To Pimp A Butterfly, and he just put out his own album of jazz/soul, Velvet Portraits.
