Iron Maiden at Prudential Center

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Thurston Moore Group, Taiwan Housing Project @ Bowery Ballroom
Thurston Moore recently released his latest album Rock n Roll Consciousness, which mixes his the approach he used in his Sonic Youth days with jammier acid rock. His band includes former Sonic Youth bandmate Steve Shelley and My Bloody Valentine’s Deb Googe.

The Kills, Algiers @ Brooklyn Steel
Anglo-American duo have been around since the early ’00s, making riffy rock that mixes in big swaths of style an attitude. Opening tonight are Georgia’s Algiers who run soul and gospel though the goth wringer.

Iron Maiden, Ghost @ Barclays Center
Heavy metal as we know it wouldn’t exist without Iron Maiden, but they aren’t content to just stick to the classics. Their latest album, 2015’s The Book of Souls, is is truly worthwhile and they’ve been playing a bunch of songs from it on this tour. Occult rock newcomers Ghost make for a great double bill.

Negative Approach, Bloodclot, Ascend/Descend, Crushed @ Saint Vitus
Hardcore legends Negative Approach are on the road with hardcore supergroup Bloodclot, whose lineup includes John Joseph of Cro-Mags, Todd Youth of Warzone/Murphy’s Law, Nick Oliveri of Kyuss/QOTSA, and Joey Castillo of QOTSA. The openers are cool too: Boston’s Ascend/Descend (members of American Nightmare, Lunglust and Math the Band) and NYC’s Crushed.

Phish @ Madison Square Garden
Phish have already played the Garden nearly 40 times, and by the end of this ‘Phish – The Baker’s Dozen: 13 Nights at the Garden’ run, they’ll have played the arena 52 times. This is night 1.

Chris Stapleton, Anderson East, Brent Cobb @ Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater
Country singer Chris Stapleton’s 2015 debut Traveller had some of the biggest crossover in the non-country world of any album in a while. He followed it this year with From A Room: Volume 1, which lives up to anticipation pretty well.

Oliver Ackerman, Ursula Kennedy, Bashlite, Dan Ivan @ 1090 Wyckoff
If you like noise this show should be pretty cool, with four different musicians taking different approaches including A Place to Bury Strangers’ Oliver Ackermann who will be playing power tools run through distortion pedals.

Iron Chic, The Obsessives, CLIQUE, Weed Hounds @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Long Island punk staples Iron Chic signed to SideOneDummy about a year ago and we’re patiently awaiting their first album for the label. Meanwhile, they remain an active live band.

Evian Christ, Laurel Halo vs Total Freedom, Scott Brown, DJ Kenn, Vapordog @ secret Brooklyn location
Evian Christ, who is working on his first album for Warp, has been throwing the “Trance Party” in the UK for a few years now but this is his first in NYC, which happens at a secret location.  Laurel Halo, who just released her first “vocal” album since 2012’s Quarantine, plays a Vs set with Total Freedom. You can catch both Evian and Laurel at Warm Up on Saturday.

Laurel Halo, Thomas Brinkmann, Derek Piotr @ Issue Project Room
In addition to that show with Evian Christ, Laurel plays Issue Project Room tonight too.

Hank Wood and the Hammerheads, Suicide Slide @ Pioneer Works
Organ-fueled garage punks Hank Wood and the Hammerheads are one of the finest bands in NYC’s punk underground. Tonight they play the unique “Grand Ole Opera” series at performing arts space Pioneer Works.

Amadou and Mariam, Innov Gnawa, Ahmed Gallab (DJ) @ Prospect Park Bandshell
Acclaimed Malian music duo Amadou & Mariam don’t let the fact that neither one can see stop them from making amazing music. They’ve got a new album on the way and tonight should be a great show — it’s also free — with Innov Gnawa and a DJ set from Sinkane’s Ahmed Gallab.

Martin Rev, Ancient Ocean @ Rough Trade
Suicide co-founder Martin Rev recently released new solo album Demolition 9 which he made with producer Craig Leon that’s comprised of 34 wildly disparate vignettes. Opening tonight is ambient artist Ancient Oceans whose new album is due out later this year.

Eliot Glazer, Taran Killam, Marina Franklin @ The Bell House
Eliot Glazer (brother of Broad City’s Ilana Glazer) brings his classically-trained pipes to his live show “Haunting Renditions” where he takes some of pop music’s most infamous songs and turns them into highbrow, sweeping ballads. Former SNL castmember Taran Killam is among tonight’s guests.
