What's going on Friday?

Neurosis in concert
Neurosis at Roadburn 2016 (more by Tim Bugbee)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Neurosis, Converge, Amenra @ Warsaw
Old pals Neurosis and Converge are on tour together right now and this pairing is not to miss. Both bands make aggressive music that blurs the lines between punk and metal, and both are legends in their own right (they’ve also collaborated before). Opening is Belgian post-metal greats Amenra, making this show even more desirable. This is night one of two at Warsaw.

Dave Chappelle, The Roots @ Radio City Music Hall
Dave Chappelle’s 16-show Radio City residency has exciting guests every night, and so far, each one has had unannounced guests too. This one is only billing The Roots (it’s Chappelle’s fourth of four nights with them), but who knows who else will show up?

CHIC ft Nile Rodgers, Earth, Wind & Fire @ Prudential Center
If you like ’70s funk, tonight’s show — featuring two the the decade’s heaviest hitters — should be a nonstop party.

Mew, MONAKR @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Mew returned this year with Visuals, which is another very solid dose of the kind of proggy dream pop that no one does quite like Mew. Tonight’s their first of two shows in NYC.

Phish @ Madison Square Garden
Each night of Phish’s “Baker’s Dozen” run at MSG has a different donut flavor, and they match the flavor with themed covers and song lyrics (for example, they coverd “Strawberry Fields Forever” on the strawberry night). This is the third to last show.

Rancid, Dropkick Murphys, Bouncing Souls, Jake Burns @ Stone Pony
Rancid returned this year with Trouble Maker, which is right up the alley of their classic ’90s albums and the loudest, fastest album they’ve made in years. They’re on tour now with longtime Celtic punk staples Dropkick Murphys, Jersey punk heroes The Bouncing Souls, and Stiff Little Fingers frontman Jake Burns. They play Asbury Park tonight and Coney Island on Sunday.

Katie Von Schleicher, Sam Evian, Tiny Hazard, Joe Pera @ Union Pool
This is a cool bill of local artists, including Tiny Hazard who released the complex art pop album Greyland this year, and awesomely awkward comedian Joe Pera.

Laetitia Sadier Source Ensemble (ex Stereolab), Art Feynman @ WFMU Monty Hall
It’s been ten years since Stereolab switched off, but Laetitia Sadier is still making groovy sounds with her new groop Source Ensemble. Joining her this night is Art Feynman, aka Here We Go Magic’s Luke Temple in excellent krautrock/tropicália/afrobeat mode.

Sun Voyager, The Mad Doctors, The Royal They, Garbage Brain, Graveyard Lovers @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Brooklyn’s Sun Voyager traffic in far-out, fuzzed-out psych and headline the “High-Five-A-Thon” being presented by King Pizza Records.

DJ sets: Zola Jesus, HANZ, Jenni Hensler @ Saint Vitus
Zola Jesus has an anticipated new album and tour on the way, but meanwhile she DJs Saint Vitus tonight.

A$AP Ferg @ Stage 48
A$AP Ferg’s new album Still Striving drops in two weeks and it’s one of three A$AP Mob albums coming out this month. Ahead of its release, he plays this late-night party at Stage 48.

‘CREED’ with Wordless Music Orchestra @ Prospect Park Bandshell
Yes, we did a double take at first too, but don’t worry, this is not ’90s grunge lite band Creed, it’s the crowd-pleasing film and excellent Rocky offshoot Creed, which screens tonight with a live soundtrack by the Wordless Music Orchestra. Free.

The Soul Rebels featuring Pete Rock & Smoke DZA @ Brooklyn Bowl
NOLA brass band The Soul Rebels often play shows with very cool hip hop guests, and this one is no different. New York rap legend Pete Rock and recent collaborator Smoke DZA will show up for this one.
