John Cale
John Cale

What's going on Friday?

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

John Cale performs ‘The Velvet Underground & Nico’ with Animal Collective, MGMT, Tunde Adebimpe (TV on the Radio), Connan Mockassin, Caroline Polachek (Chairlift), Thee Oh Sees, Kurt Vile, and Sky Ferreira @ BAM
Punk, indie rock, and basically all underground/alternative music as we know it wouldn’t exist without The Velvet Underground & Nico, and in celebration of the album’s 50th anniversary, surviving member John Cale is performing it with some seriously impressive guests.

King Crimson @ Beacon Theatre
Prog rock icons King Crimson — which currently includes Robert Fripp, Jakko Jakszyk, Mel Collins, Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto, Gavin Harrison, Jeremy Stacey, and Bill Rieflin — bring their fall tour to Beacon Theatre tonight and tomorrow.

Downtown Boys, Olivia Neutron-John, Big Huge @ Brooklyn Bazaar
Downtown Boys’ first album for Sub Pop, Cost of Living, came out earlier this year, and it’s possibly their best yet, with all the raging tempos, sax lines, and empowering lyricism you’d hope for. Their live shows are even better than the records.

Eyelids, Jay Gonzalez (of Drive-By Truckers), Early Riser, Other Houses @ Cape House
Like side projects? Eyelids features The Decemberists‘ John Moen and former Guided by Voices member Chris Slusarenko, while Jay & The Guilty Pleasures is Jay Gonzalez of Drive-by Truckers.

The Brooklyn Podcast Festival
The inaugural Brooklyn Podcast Festival, of which BrooklynVegan is the exclusive media partner, continues tonight with Chapo Trap House, Reductress Presents: Mouth Time Live, and more.

Meatbodies, The Nude Party, Breanna Barbara @ Market Hotel
It’s a night of raucous garage, with Ty Segall cohorts Meatbodies, North Carolina transplants The Nude Party, and Breanna Barbara (who just got off a tour as Tricky’s vocalist).

Mark Mulcahy, Summer Fiction @ Mercury Lounge
While best known for his bands Miracle Legion and Polaris, Marc Mulcahy has a rewarding solo career as well, having released Possum in the Driveway earlier this year. His warm, lived-in voice is welcome in any format.

The Jesus and Mary Chain @ PlayStation Theatre
While the JAMC have been back in action for a few years now, it wasn’t till this year they got around to releasing their first album in nearly two decades. Damage & Joy saw them slip right back into the groove like they never left.

Stars @ Rough Trade
Masters of epics in miniature, Toronto’s Stars remain heartfelt and tuneful on new album There Is No Love In Fluorescent Light. This is their second of three intimate, sold out Rough Trade shows.

Unsane, Cherubs, Plaque Marks @ Saint Vitus Bar
NYC noiserock greats Unsane recently released Sterilize, their first album in five years, which finds them just as fierce and awesomely uncomfortable in their skin as ever. Tonight is the seond of two sold-out Saint Vitus shows.

Luna, Chris Forsyth & the Solar Motel Band @ WFMU Monty Hall
Much like the Mary Chain, Luna have been back together for a while but only returned with a new album (actually two records) this year that finds them picking up right where they left off. They play the intimate (and rather DIY) Monty Hall tonight ahead of their much bigger Brooklyn Steel show on Saturday. Sold out.

Springsteen on Broadway
It’s the hottest ticket on Broadway: Bruce Springsteen playing solo at the intimate Walter Kerr Theatre, performing some of his biggest hits and telling stories about them. His show runs through February.

Silversun Pickups, Minus the Bear @ Brooklyn Steel
SIlversun Pickups are on tour and they’ve got a great opener along for the ride, Minus the Bear, who released the very solid VOIDS earlier this year. This is their second of two NYC shows this week.

P.O.S, Metasota, Transit22 @ Elsewhere (Zone One)
Doomtree and Marijuana Deathsquads member P.O.S returned this year with his latest solo album, Chill, Dummy. Tonight he plays the small room at new Bushwick venue Elsewhere.

Turnover, Elvis Depressedly, pronoun @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Turnover continued their mix of dream pop and emo on this year’s Good Nature, which came out in August on Run For Cover. This is their first of two NYC shows this week.

Circa Survive, Thrice, Balance and Composure, Chon @ Terminal 5
Thrice are celebrating the 10th anniversary of their Alchemy Index EP series, and while they won’t be playing the whole thing, you can expect more songs from those EPs than an average Thrice show. Circa Survive released their latest album The Amulet this year and Balance & Composure released their Vagrant debut Light We Made last year.

Regina Spektor (solo) @ Bergen PAC
Regina Spektor is currently doing a solo tour, which is very special at this point in her career, especially for any longtime fans who miss her early days. No NYC shows on this tour but she’s in Jersey tonight.
