Angel Olsen, Heron Oblivion @ Brooklyn Steel
Angel Olsen is more popular than ever thanks to last year’s great My Woman (which we named the #1 album of 2016), and she recently followed that album with the rarities comp Phases, which is as good as any of her proper albums. This week she plays three NYC shows with psych-rock supergroup Heron Oblivion, whose debut album on Sub Pop was also one of the stronger albums of 2016. This is night three.
The Hold Steady @ Brooklyn Bowl
For the second year in a row, literate bar rockers The Hold Steady are celebrating the holidays with a run of shows at Brooklyn Bowl. This is the third of four shows, and the band is promising “good friends, good times and great surprises” at each one. Night 1 had Patterson Hood and night 2 had Cayetana. Who will join them tonight? Advance tickets are sold out but there will be limited admission at doors.
Glassjaw @ Saint Vitus
It took 15 years but Long Island post-hardcore greats Glassjaw have finally released a followup to 2002’s classic Worship & Tribute. It’s out today, and they’re celebrating with this very intimate, sold-out show.
Rapsody @ SOB’s
Rapsody’s career saw a boost after Kendrick Lamar featured her on To Pimp A Butterfly, and this year she returned with her first proper full-length in a while, the excellent Laila’s Wisdom (which earned her some Grammy nominations). This is her first NYC show since the album came out.
Action Bronson, Trash Talk, Meyhem Lauren @ Starland Ballroom
Queens rap staples Action Bronson and Meyhem Lauren have been collaborators for years. This year, they both released worthy new albums that feature each other. Now they’re also on tour together, playing Jersey tonight and NYC next week. Hardcore band Trash Talk, who are no stranger to playing on rap shows, make this an excellent triple bill.
Jessica Lea Mayfield, Active Bird Community, Esther Rose @ Baby’s All Right
Jessica Lea Mayfield changes it up on every album, and on this year’s Sorry Is Gone she adds a little shoegaze rock to her repetoire. She had to delay her tour a bit due to sadly getting in a car crash, but thankfully she recovered and now she’s playing shows again.
The Menzingers, The Flatliners, Worriers @ House of Independents
The Menzingers released their very fun new album After The Party this year, and they’re closing the year out with some Northeast holiday shows. This is their first of two shows at Asbury Park’s House of Independents. Also of note, Worriers released their first album for SideOneDummy this year, Survival Pop.
Patterson Hood @ Rockwood Music Hall
Having just opened for The Hold Steady at Brooklyn Bowl, Drive-by Truckers’ Patterson Hood plays this intimate show where his heartfelt, socially conscious songwriting will really shine.
Bush Tetras, Shilpa Ray, Eszter Balint @ The Bell House
New York post-punk vets Bush Tetras, best known for their 1980 classic “Too Many Creeps,” play tonight with the great Shilpa Ray whose bluesy swagger perhaps owes a little to the Tetras’ sound.
The Barr Brothers, Shannon Lay @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Montreal’s Barr Brothers make a special brand of heartland folk-rock. The group are excellent arrangers and performers and there aren’t a lot of bands like this who have a full-time harp player. If you haven’t checked out their most recent album, Queens of the Breakers, remedy that. Opening this show is Shannon Lay whose music entranced Kevin Morby enough that he started a label just to put our her new album.
A. Savage (of Parquet Courts), Gift Wrap (members of B Boys) @ WFMU Monty Hall
While Parquet Courts haven’t slowed down their release schedule, co-frontman Andrew Savage found time for his very good debut solo album, Thawing Dawn.
Sound of Ceres, Erika Spring (DJ), The Six Six Sick Girls (DJ) @ China Chalet
Candy Claws’ Karen Hover and Ryan Hover formed Sound of Ceres, with a more ethereal-baroque style of pop. This is a benefit for the NYC DSA.
Hundredth, Spotlights, Tennis System, Gleemer @ Brooklyn Bazaar
Metalcore-turned-atmospheric-rock band Hundredth open this show, and if you’re going, we recommend catching sludgy shoegazers Spotlights too.
Buke and Gase, Babyteeth @ Elsewhere (Zone One)
Buke and Gase get their name from the instruments that they themselves created (baritone uke and guitar/bass hybrid), and seeing them use those instruments to bring their sound to life at their shows is a real treat.
