What’s going on Friday?
You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…
Phish @ MSG
Phish are not taking it easy this year. After doing a run of 13 MSG shows over the summer, they’re now back at the venue for their time-honored tradition of ringing in the New Year there. This is night two of four.
High On Fire @ Saint Vitus (early show with Second Arrows, late show with Sannhet)
Sludge greats High On Fire are celebrating their 20th anniversary on tour in 2018, but first, they’re playing two back to back, sold out shows at Brooklyn’s Saint Vitus tonight (a small venue for them). The late show has post-rockers Sannhet, who released a very solid new album this year.
The Dillinger Escape Plan, Code Orange, Daughters @ Terminal 5
Spastic post-hardcore greats The Dillinger Escape Plan are calling it quits after three final shows at NYC’s Terminal 5. This is the final one, and there’s killer support from Code Orange and Daughters.
Cymbals Eat Guitars, Charles Bissel (of The Wrens) @ Bowery Ballroom
Cymbals Eat Guitars have a tradition of playing NYC around the holidays, and this year is no different. Opening is Charles Bissel of The Wrens (whose looooong-awaited new album is apparently finally done), who produced CEG’s debut.
Gogol Bordello, Lucky Chops @ Brooklyn Steel
Every show by gypsy punk greats Gogol Bordello is a party, so it makes sense that they always love to play around New Year’s Eve. They aren’t playing NYE in NYC this year, but they’re doing two shows at Brooklyn Steel right beforehand. This is night two.
Springsteen on Broadway @ Walter Kerr Theatre
The Boss is currently in the midst of his completely sold-out “Springsteen on Broadway” run at the Walter Kerr Theatre, which has now been extended through June! At these shows, Bruce plans to give fans shows “that are as personal and as intimate as possible.” This is a pretty standard show but maybe he’ll throw in a holiday song?
The Felice Brothers, Twain @ White Eagle Hall
The Felice Brothers, who have been backing Conor Oberst on tour all year, have three NYC-area shows around the holidays. This is the final one.
Staying inside on this very cold Friday? The new season of dystopian sci-fi series Black Mirror debuts today on Netflix.
