Ever want to see Stranger Things soundtrackers S U R V I V E play live in a cemetery? Here’s your chance, as part of this weekend’s “Into the Veil” live music and performance event that sounds a bit like Sleep No More meets a concert at a haunted house. Also performing: Laraaji, Lucien Shapiro, Rob Roth, The Burns Archive, Ashley Rose Couture, The Apprehension Engine, and “more to be discovered.”
Colin Stetson’s ‘Sorrow: A re-imagining of Górecki’s Third Symphony’ @ Brookfield Place
Part of Brookfield Place’s “New Sounds Live” series, saxophonist extraordinaire Colin Stetson reimagines of the third symphony of Polish composer Henryk Gorecki with a rock/classical ensemble. Free, 7:30 PM
Modest Mouse, Mimicking Birds @ The Capitol Theatre
Modest Mouse haven’t released an album since 2015’s Strangers to Ourselves, but they always load their setlist with old favorites and they remain a must-see live band. This is their first of two consecutive nights at the Cap.
Andrew W.K., Def.GRLS @ Warsaw
Andrew W.K. is always busy doing one thing or another, but this is his first proper full-band tour in five years, and what better way to see the king of partying than with a loud, rockin’ band behind him?
Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival
It’s the second night of BEMF with four shows: Pete Tong at Analog BKNY, Leon Vynehall at Good Room, Lustmord at MHOW, and a Low End Theory party with The Gaslamp Killer, Teebs and more at Paper Box.
Wolves in the Throne Room, Pillorian @ Villain
Atmospheric black metal band Wolves in the Throne Room ditched their trademark sound for an ambient album with 2014’s Celestite but they’re back to the basics for this year’s Thrice Woven. This is a great double bill with Pillorian, the new band of Agalloch’s John Haughm.
Kool Keith, Craig G, Focus The Truth, PF Cuttin @ The Safari Room at El Cortez
From his time with ’80s-era group the Ultramagnetic MCs to his time as Dr. Octagon to all the other crazy stuff he does, abstract rapper Kool Keith has remained prolific and consistently great for decades. He recently dropped a new collab single with MF DOOM, and he plays a small Bushwick show tonight.
Wesley Stace’s Cabinet of Wonders feat Eric Andersen, Juliana Hatfield, Dave Hill, Stephin Merritt, Eugene Mirman, David Myles, Annalee Newitz, Suzzy Roche and more @ City Winery
The artist formerly known as John Wesley Harding presents his October edition of the “Cabinet of Wonders” variety show, and the lineup is seriously good with Juliana Hatfield, Magnetic Fields’ Stephin Merritt, Eugene Mirman and lots more.
Blondie, Nick Lowe @ Tilles Center Concert Hall (Long Island)
Pretend it’s 1978 with the terrific double bill of new wave icons Blondie and pub rock pioneer and all-around cool cat Nick Lowe.
Everything Everything, Savoir Adore @ Irving Plaza
This UK band pulls in disparate set of influence that at times genuinely sounds like “everything everything.” They just released their fourth album, A Fever Dream.
Widowspeak, Clearance, Air Waves @ Rough Trade
Widowspeak’s new album Expect the Best doesn’t stray too far from the hazy, atmospheric, yes a little Mazzy-Star-ish, sound of their previous records, but that’s fine. They’re good at what they do.
Honey, Slam Section, Brandy, Bull @ Alphaville
If you like your punk rock loud, fast, and loose — Detroit style — local trio Honey are good behind the wheel, even if they have a lead foot.
Goldlink, Masego, April + VISTA @ Brooklyn Steel
Earlier this year, rising DC rapper GoldLink released his major label debut At What Cost, which features Jazmine Sullivan, Kaytranada, Wale, Steve Lacy, and others. Tonight’s show is sold out.
Nnamdi Ogbonnaya, Lexie, L’Rain @ Baby’s All Right
Nnamdi Ogbonnaya pulls from rap, but really he’s got a genre-defying sound that’s nearly impossible to pin down. Tonight he plays a Brooklyn show with Lexie, another band of Frankie Cosmos singer Greta Kline.
Innanet James, Beau Young Prince, James P, Samsin, Kechphrase, Exitpost @ Baby’s All Right
After the Nnamdi Ogbonnaya show, Baby’s hosts this midnight show with a bill headlined by buzzy Brooklyn rapper Innanet James.
Springsteen on Broadway
It’s the hottest ticket on Broadway: Bruce Springsteen playing solo at the intimate Walter Kerr Theatre, performing some of his biggest hits and telling stories about them. His show runs through February.
Sloppy Jane, Model/Actriz, Sabrina Is Not In This Chat, Matter Room @ HECK
Brooklyn 9-piece band Sloppy Jane (8 people and a television) make quite the racket (adding violin, sax, and recorders to their guitar/bass/drums rock setup), and singer Haley Dahl is known to perform entirely naked except for socks.
Joe Russo’s Almost Dead @ Brooklyn Bowl
Joe Russo’s Almost Dead have emerged as one of the finest Grateful Dead-related bands around (and Russo often plays with actual Dead members). They’re in the midst of a six-night run at Brooklyn Bowl.
Halsey, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Charli XCX @ Barclays Center
Pop star Halsey headlines this big arena show, and there’s pretty solid support from Drake associate PARTYNEXTDOOR and punky pop singer Charli XCX.
It is Friday the 13th and if you’d like to see the ’80s horror classic Friday The 13th on a big screen, you can do that at Alamo Drafthouse and Videology, while Part 2 is showing at Nitehawk.
