Franz Ferdinand, Bodega @ Brooklyn Steel
Though we miss Nick McCarthy, Franz Ferdinand remain a fun live band and mid-’00s hits like “Take Me Out” and “This Fire” still go over like gangbusters. If you’re going, don’t miss Brooklyn’s Bodega who are cut from the same post-punk cloth as FF, but bring a situationist attitude and humor.
Once and Future Band, Parrot Dream, Jane Church @ Knitting Factory Brooklyn
Oakland, CA’s Once and Future Band make music that sounds like its been transported from 1977, along with a deep shag rug. Thick funk mingles with orchestral outer space soft rock for the perfect soundtrack to your next fondue party. Their album came out via John Dwyer’s Castle Face label.
The Nels Cline 4 feat. Julian Lage, Scott Colley & Tom Rainey with Marika Hughes (cello) & Rashaan Carter (bass) @ (le) poisson rouge
Guitar great Nels Cline has been playing as a duo with Julian Lage for some time, and they recently brought in bassist Scott Colley and drummer Tom Rainey to form The Nels Cline 4, and released the album Currents, Constellations on Blue Note this past Friday.
Rick from Pile, Big Ups, Crusher @ Silent Barn
Having just toured opening for Titus Andronicus, Rick from Pile plays his own show at Silent Barn tonight, which is one of your last chances to get to the venue before it closes. Also on the bill is Pile’s Exploding In Sound bandmates Big Ups, whose post-hardcore attack is great live.
Butterboy Comedy with Jo, Aparna & Maeve @ Littlefield
This week at Butterboy it’s Katia Compa, Dave Ross, Kevin Iso, Chris Charpentier, Nonye Brown-West, and maybe some surprise guests (Ilana Glazer dropped in last week).
Whiplash @ Union Hall
After years as a Monday night staple at UCB, the legendary stand up showcase has found a new home at Union Hall. A few things have changed (the show starts at 10 PM and tickets are available online), but the lineup is still a surprise.
