John Lydon is celebrating PiL’s 40th anniversary this year with a documentary, a box set and this tour where they’re playing songs from throughout their long career.
Johnny Marr, The Belle Game @ Irving Plaza
Johnny Marr has now released three good solo albums, including this year’s The Tracers, but he loads his sets with plenty of Smiths songs and he might actually sing them better than Morrissey currently.
Little Dragon, April + Vista @ Elsewhere
Swedish pop greats Little Dragon are now on Ninja Tune, and going by the heady electronics of their new “Lover Chanting” single, their upcoming EP of the same name should feel right at home on this label. Having just opened for Gorillaz in Boston, they play headlining Brooklyn shows tonight and tomorrow. Both sold out.
Mick Jenkins @ Public Arts (two shows)
Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins’ new album Pieces Of A Man comes out next week (10/26), and he helps welcome it into the world with two intimate seated shows at Public Arts tonight.
Goo Goo Dolls (playing Dizzy Up The Girl) @ Beacon Theatre
Goo Goo Dolls’ new stuff may not be so hot, but how could we not mention they’re playing Dizzy Up The Girl (the one with “Iris,” “Slide,” and “Black Balloon”) in full for its 20th anniversary? It’s gonna be a very nostalgic night.
Terror, Harms Way, Backtrack, Year of the Knife, Candy, Ekulu @ Brooklyn Bazaar
Terror headline this six-band bill which is an all-around very solid hardcore show. Especially of note is Harms Way, whose new album is one of the year’s best hc LPs.
The Vaccines, Jesse Jo Stark @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
The Hype for British band The Vaccines may have died down in the States since they burst on the scene in 2010 but they’re still hitmakers in the UK, and this year’s Combat Sports went to #4 on the UK album chart.
Butterboy Comedy @ Littlefield
Hari Kondabolu and his brother Ashok (aka Dapwell) guest-host tonight’s edition of Butterboy and welcome comedians Carolyn Busa, Chelsea Hood, Larry Owens, Brendan Eyre, Blair Socci & more.
Phoebe Robinson @ Gramercy Theatre
2 Dope Queens; Phoebe Robinson celebrates the release of her new book, Everything’s Trash But It’s Okay, and you get a copy of the book with your ticket.
