What's going on Monday?

Smashing Pumpkins
Smashing Pumpkins at Jones Beach in 2015 (more by Greg Cristman)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Smashing Pumpkins (acoustic), Liz Phair @ Beacon Theatre
Neither the Smashing Pumpkins nor Liz Phair have released anything too essential in a while, but they both put out some of the best alternative rock of the ’90s. For this tour the Pumpkins (who have secret weapon Jimmy Chamberlin back in the drummer’s chair) are playing acoustic. Tonight’s their first of three shows at Beacon Theatre.

Daughter @ National Sawdust
Daughter’s new album Not To Disappear (on 4AD) is a pretty bare-bones record musically, but the lyrics have a level of detail and emotion that can really tug at the heartstrings. National Sawdust has a pretty cool atmosphere for music like this, which should make for a great show.

Michael Kiwanuka, KaiL Baxley @ Bowery Ballroom
Soulful UK singer Michael Kiwanuka recently announced that he’ll release his sophomore album, Love & Hate, on May 27. While we’ll have to wait ’til then to hear it, perhaps he’ll preview some of it at his NYC shows this week. This is his second of two, and it’s a pretty intimate place for him (and not surprisingly sold out).

Your Old Droog, The Doppelgangaz, Denmark Vessey, Lyricks @ SOB’s
Your Old Droog first picked up buzz for sounding more than a little like Nas, but he’s continued to craft his own sound. It’s worth catching The Doppelgangaz tonight too.

Bernie Worrell tribute w/ George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Living Colour, Bill Laswell, Talking Heads’ Jerry Harrison, The Meters’ Leo Nocentelli, B-52s’ Fred Schneider, Questlove, Buckethead, Meryl Streep & many more @ Webster Hall
Legendary keyboardist Bernie Worrell, who was a founding member of Parliament-Funkadelic and worked with the Talking Heads, was sadly diagnosed with lung cancer. There will be a tribute/benefit show for him tonight and it’s loaded with amazing guests. Full lineup here.

Night Train Hosted by Wyatt Cenac feat. Liza Treyger, Justin WIlliams, David Angelo, Ryan Beck & more @ Littlefield
Hop aboard Wyatt Cenac’s weekly Night Train comedy show. This week’s guests include Liza Treyger, Justin Williams, David Angelo, Ryan Beck, and more.

For all of tonight’s shows, and tomorrow’s, check out our NYC concert calendar.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.
