Canadian musician Alex Calder runs in the same physical and sonic circles as Mac DeMarco; The Shacks make vintage-sounding soul and R&B.

La Neve, Sitcom, Groupie, VZn @ Silent Barn
Brooklyn label Fluorescent Thought releases Evergreen: A Benefit Compilation for Hour Children today, with all proceeds going to Hour Children, whose “mission is to help incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women and their children successfully rejoin the community, reunify with their families, and build healthy, independent, and secure lives.” This is the release show with some of the artists on the comp, including La Neve (Joey DeFrancesco of Downtown Boys). Hour Children representatives will table and speak between sets.

Told It First Hand with Rakim (interview) @ Brooklyn Historical Society
Rakim reunited with his old pal Eric B for the first time in over 20 years to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the groundbreaking Paid In Full at The Apollo last week. Now he’s giving a live interview as part of the ongoing Brooklyn Hip Hop Fest.

UCB All Stars, Sasheer Zamata @ Central Park SummerStage
Former Saturday Night Live cast member Sasheer Zamata heads up this UCB All-Stars comedy night which also features a pre-show panel discussion “Only in New York: Funny Women” with Sarah Maslin Nir.

Night Train w/ Wyatt Cenac @ Littlefield
Wyatt Cenac’s long-running comedy night this week welcomes Josh Gondelman, Nate Fernald, Devon Walker, Robby Hoffman, Marie Faustin, Olivia Grace and more.

Mike Birbiglia @ Union Hall
While Mike Birbiglia can fill big venues these days, he still stops by Union Hall to test new material at shows he calls “Working it Out.” Sold out.

Judd Apatow @ Union Hall
Writer/director of The 40 Year Old Virgin, and Knocked Up, co-creator of Freaks and Geeks, writer on The Ben Stiller Show and The Larry Sanders Show, to name just a few of his credits, Judd Apatow is one of the most important figures in comedy of the last 20 years. Folks who got tickets will be able to catch him in stand-up form in an extremely intimate setting tonight.
