Desert Daze 2017 - Friday
Ty Segall at Desert Daze 2017 (more by Coen Rees)

What's Going on Saturday?

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Ty Segall, Purling Hiss @ The Capitol Theatre
Ty Segall, whose latest album, Freedom’s Goblin, came out in January, is on the road with his white-hot Freedom Band and even though this is a bigger room than Ty usually plays, expect the intensity level to remain high.

Mickey Hart @ American Museum of Natural History
Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart returned last year with a new solo album (which featured Animal Collective’s Avey Tare on a track), and this weekend he’s bringing those songs to life in a very unique way at the Museum of Natural History. This is night two of two.

Wrekmeister Harmonies @ Baby’s All Right
Wrekmeister Harmonies just released their new album, The Alone Rush, their first recorded as the duo of JR Robinson and Esther Shaw. It features Thor Harris and Martin Bisi, both of whom collaborated with different eras of Swans, and if you like that band, you’ll dig this new record too.

WBAR-BQ w/ Palehound, Weaves, pinkcaravan, Crosslegged @ Barnard College
Barnard College’s annual WBAR-B-Q is free and open to the public, and as usual, it’s got a very fine lineup of mostly indie rock (pinkcaravan is a rapper).

Meek is Murder, Mary Todd, Drive-By Bukkake, Wreath Of Tongues @ Brooklyn Bazaar
Mathcore rippers Meek Is Murder grace their hometown with a show tonight, and their intense live show is always worth seeing.

Sidi Toure @ Brooklyn Bowl
Malian artists and legendary Songhaï folk musician Sidi Touré led Gao’s regional orchestra, The Songhaï Stars, before going out on his own. He just released new album, Toubalbero, via Thrill Jockey and he kicks of his U.S. tour this weekend as part of The World Music Institute’s “Festival of Mali.”

Bush Tetras, Palberta, Pill @ (le) poisson rouge
NYC no wave icons Bush Tetras are back with their first newly recorded record in 10 years — an EP titled Take the Fall. They celebrate tonight with two bands who have clearly heard Bush Tetras’ classic records.

Jeremy Flower, Hollenbeck, Iverson, Kihlstedt, Tordini, Zimmerli @ Merkin Concert Hall (Ecstatic Music Festival)
Part of the 2018 Ecstatic Music Festival, today’s performance includes composer-saxophonist Patrick Zimmerli with former Bad Plus pianist Ethan Iverson, bassist Chris Tordini and composer-jazz drummer John Hollenbeck; then pop/art song composer-violinist-vocalist Carla Kihlstedt and composer Jeremy Flower who join Zimmerli, Tordini and Hollenbeck for the world premiere of Songs of Mourning, “an exploration of sorrow ranging from the political to the personal, and other works from their cumulative pasts.”

Waxahatchee, Hurray for the Riff Raff, Bedouine @ Murmrr Theatre
This is a truly great triple bill — all three acts work well together but all three have their own distinct sound. They’re also all fresh off releasing very solid 2017 albums.

Khruangbin, The Mattson 2 Music Hall of Williamsburg
Texas trio Khruangbin mix world influences into their jammy sound, as can be heard on their first album for Dead Oceans, Con Todo El Mundo.

The Feelies @ Rough Trade
The Feelies are a national treasure and their live shows remain wonderful marathons. This is the second of three Rough Trade shows this weekend.

Vagabon, Zenizen, L’Rain @ Silent Barn
This is one of the last chances you’ll have to go to Silent Barn before it closes, and it’s a good one. Rising indie rocker Vagabon, who normally plays bigger rooms these days, headlines. Her next NYC show is a MUCH bigger one: opening for Courtney Barnett and Julien Baker in Prospect Park.

NPR’s Live From Here w/ Chris Thile, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Janeane Garofalo @ Town Hall
Chris Thile welcomes Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks on this live broadcast of the show formerly known as A Prairie Home Companion.

A. Savage, February, William Parker, Lea Bertucci, Slam Section, Miguel Guiterrez, Potted Plant, The Drunken Foreigner Band, Reps @ Trans-Pecos
Parquet Courts’ frontman A. Savage headlines “Music Against Mass Incarceration II,” an all-day benefit show supporting Just Leadership USA, an organization fighting for the closure of Rikers Island and for decarceration and prison closure nationwide.

Robert Earl Thomas, Jackson MacIntosh, Widowspeak, Dinner @ Weylin (Brooklyn Brewery Beer Mansion)
Brooklyn Brewery’s Beer Mansion is a “spectacle of beer, music, food and absurdity” with the live music lineup curated by Captured Tracks. The day show is Jackson MacIntosh (Sheer Agony) and Robert Earl Thomas; the evening show is Widowspeak and Dinner. Tickets include beer tastings.

The Goddamn Dave Hill Art Show @ WFMU Monty Hall
Via WFMU: “Having had his mind blown by all the great artists who already listen to the show and create awesome art in various mediums inspired by assorted characters, phone calls, and other occurrences, unfortunate or otherwise, from the program, Dave thought it was time to make it all happen in one room where there would also be snacks and stuff…There will be a silent auction and live auction of all the pieces in the art show, the proceeds of which will go toward keeping WFMU, the greatest radio station of all-time, alive, well-lubricated, and, most importantly, on the air. There will also be live comedy, stone cold jams courtesy of DJ Bill Dolan, and other stuff that makes for good fun and reasonably safe human interaction.”

Russian Circles, King Woman @ White Eagle Hall
Instru-metal greats Russian Circles are still touring in support of 2016’s Guidance, and now they’re on the road with innovative doom band King Woman, who released their debut LP Created in the Image of Suffering on Relapse last year. They play Jersey City tonight and Brooklyn on Tuesday.

Supa Bwe, Safa Gaw, HDBeenDope, Chris Allen @ Baby’s All Right
Supa Bwe hails from Chicago’s thriving rap scene, and he’s collaborated with a handful of well-known rappers from that scene, including Chance the Rapper, Saba, and Mick Jenkins. If you like those guys but haven’t heard Supa Bwe yet, you may want to change that.

Springsteen on Broadway
The Boss continues his sold-out “Springsteen on Broadway” run at the Walter Kerr Theatre, which has now been extended through December. At these shows, Bruce is giving fans shows “that are as personal and as intimate as possible.”
