What's going on Saturday?

Car Seat Headrest @ BVSXSW 2016
Car Seat Headrest @ BVSXSW 2016 (more by Amanda Hatfield)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Wolf Parade, Cut Worms @ Bowery Ballroom
It’s been a great week for Wolf Parade, releasing a very good new EP and playing these Bowery residency shows (that have all been great so far). Tonight’s the last one, and if you’re going do check out opener Cut Worms — his quirky take on Everly Brothers type pop (complete with canned applause) is worth your time.

Car Seat Headrest, Dicktations @ Rough Trade
Car Seat Headrest’s new album Teens of Denial may no longer have that bit of The Cars’ “Just What I Needed” (a legal matter that had Matador destroy all physical copies of the LP) but it’s a great album nonetheless, smart, funny and endlessly hooky indie rock. Celebrate the digital release tonight. Sold out.

Islands, TUNS, Lushlife @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Islands just released two new albums (one rock, one synthpop) and celebrate tonight. Of special note: this marks the U.S. live debut of Canadian supergroup TUNS which features members of Sloan, Superfriendz, and The Inbreds.

Bent Shapes, The Snow Fairies, Los Bonsáis, Soft Science, Design @ Baby’s All Right
It’s a free brunch/matinee NYC Popfest show featuring Design, the new band from The Chesterfields’ Simon Barber, plus California band Soft Science, Spain’s Los Bonsais, Boston’s terrific Bent Shapes, and Philly’s Snow Fairies. 1 PM start.

The Primitives, The Chesterfields, Mercury Girls, Alpaca Sports, Tiny Fireflies, Cristina Quesada @ Knitting Factory
The evening NYC Popfest show features a couple of mid-’80s UK indiepop acts (The Primitives, The Chesterfields), Philly’s terrific Mercury Girls, Swedish band Alpaca Sports, and more.

The Zombies, Felix Cavaliere’s Racals @ Wellmont Theatre
Baroque/psych pop as we know it wouldn’t exist without The Zombies, whose 1968 album Odessey and Oracle is one of the best and most influential examples of the genre. Tonight they play just outside of NYC with Felix Cavaliere’s current version of fellow ’60s pop band The Rascals.

Bad Boy Family reunion w/ Puff Daddy, Lil Kim, Mase, Faith Evans, Mario Winans, 112, Total, The Lox, French Montana, Carl Thomas, Black Rob, Machine Gun Kelly, Yung Joc, Swizz Beatz, Mary J. Blige @ Barclays Center
Puff Daddy is getting the Bad Boy Family back together (almost everyone who appeared on his hits-filled 1997 debut album No Way Out) for a full tour. It begins with two shows at Barclays Center this week, this being the second. A special guest appearance by Mary J. Blige is promised (no Jay-Z like last night), and expect Biggie tributes too, of course.

Lady Lamb, Allison Crutchfield, Field Mouse, Holly Miranda @ Market Hotel
She Shreds presents this show which has a pretty stacked bill all around with alt-singer/songwriters Lady Lamb and Holly Miranda, Swearin’/Waxahatchee member Allison Crutchfield, and shoegazy rockers Field Mouse.

Vulture Festival
Pop culture blog Vulture has it’s two day fest, featuring tons of cool events, including talks with cast/crews of Better Call Saul, Jessica Jones, Mr. Robot, plus live podcast tapings (How Did This Get Made?) and more.

Gary Clark Jr., Albert Hammond Jr. @ Webster Hall
Part of Vulture Fest, this show brings together two guitarists with the same names as their dads: blues rock revivalist Gary Clark Jr. and Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr.

Anasazi, Sadist, Vivid Sekt, Plastic, Haram @ Don Pedro
It’s a diverse punk bill with local deathrockers Anasazi, Boston hardcore band Sadist, Portland’s melodic Vivid Sekt, Chicago synthpunks Vivid Sekt, and local hardcore band Haram.

Roger Harvey, Early Riser, Jeff Riddle, Jose Prieto @ Suburbia
Roger Harvey often plays shows with punk bands, and at punk venues (like Suburbia), but his sound is kind of the middle point between Neutral Milk Hotel and The Antlers.

Labyrinth 30th Anniversary ft. Jen Goma (of A Sunny Day in Glasgow), Narc Twin (Tommy Siegel of Jukebox the Ghost), Slothrust, Miracles of Modern Science, Twiga, Fashion Brigade, Best Behavior @ Shea Stadium
Both a tribute to the late David Bowie and a 30th anniversary celebration of Labrynth, they’ll be screening the film tonight with live music accompaniment.

Kiki & Herb @ Joe’s Pub
Legendary lounge/cabaret duo Kiki and Herb (aka Justin Vivian Bond and Kenny Mellman) went into retirement in 2007 but they’re returning to the stage for this run called “Kiki and Herb: Seeking Asylum!” Sold out but a limited number of tickets given away free each night via lottery.

Mike Birbiglia @ The Lynn Redgrave Theater
Comedian Mike Birbiglia has been doing his show “Thank God for the Jokes” for nearly two years. He’s putting it to bed, but not before this run which was recently extended through May.
