The Breeders, Speedy Ortiz @ Prospect Park Bandshell
The 2018 BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival is wrapping up with this penultimate show, a pretty perfect double bill of indie rock icons The Breeders and sonic protogees Speedy Ortiz. Hopefully the soggy forecast won’t soak things too much.
Porches, Sunflower Bean, Crumb @ East River Park Amphitheater
Another free outdoor indie rock show option is the smooth synthpop of Porches and the psych-rock of Sunflower Bean.
Fool’s Gold Day Off @ Knockdown Center
It’s the NYC edition of Fool’s Gold Day Off, and this year is a bit more focused on smaller artists than past years but it’s stacked with good ones, like Sheck Wes, Show Me the Body, MIKE, World’s Fair, Venus X, Junglepussy, Bbymutha, Chynna, Michael Christmas, and still many more.
Mavis Staples, Joe Henry (Lincoln Center Out of Doors / Americana Fest) @ Damrosch Park Bandshell
The free Lincoln Center Out of Doors is underway, and this weekend it hosts the two-day AmericanaFest. This is day one, with the legendary and forever-relevant soul signer Mavis Staples.
Drugdealer, Jackson MacIntosh, Confusing Mix of Nations @ Market Hotel
Michael Collins, formerly Run DMT and Salvia Plath, now makes music under the name Drugdealer. Inspired by ’60s/’70s psych pop and cinema, Drugdealer’s debut album, The End of Comedy, is tuneful, breezy and a lot of fun. Jackson Macintosh of Montreal’s Sheer Agony both opens and plays as a member of Drugdealer.
Omar S, Axel Boman, Jon Bap, Jennifer Cardini, Standing on the Corner, Molly, DJ Sanna @ MoMA PS1 (Warm Up)
It’s sadly looking like rain again, but if the weather holds out, it’ll be another great Warm Up dance party under the sun today. This one’s headlined by Detroit techno/house icon Omar-S and there’s also cool stuff earlier on like local avant-jazz group Standing on the Corner.
Wimps, Monograms, Human People, Patio @ ALPHAVILLE
Wimps, who crank out no-nonsense melodic punk that explores life’s many exasperating moments, be it gender pay inequality, having to do the laundry or go to work or leave the house in general, wondering what the vanishing bee population means to the planet, and coveting O.P.P. (“Other People’s Pizza..but only if it’s cheese.”)
Seu Jorge @ Blue Note (2 shows)
Brazilian singer and Life Aquatic troubadour Seu Jorge continues his 10-night Blue Note residency.
Latinx Punk Fest @ Brooklyn Bazaar
Latinx Punk Fest brings together punk bands from Mexico, Canada, Colombia and different parts of the US with Latinx members, and it goes down at Brooklyn Bazaar all weekend. There are three shows today, and three tomorrow.
Wild Fest @ Amityville Music Hall
The third annual Long Island DIY punk fest Wild Fest, which benefits the family memorial fund for the late Iron Chic guitarist Rob McCallister, wraps up today and today’s lineup has Iron Chic themselves. It’s also got the first show in five years from melodic hardcore crushers This Is Hell, Gracer (members of On The Might of Princes and The Backup Plan), Alove For Enemies, Night Birds, The Fad, Primitive Weapons, and more.
The Shacks, 79.5, Holy Hive @ Rough Trade
Big Crown Records is throwing a showcase at Rough Trade tonight, headlined by dream pop band The Shacks, and also featuring soul band 79.5 and pop/indie band Holy Hive. There will also be DJs from the label.
Morris Day & The Time @ Sony Hall
Minneapolis R&B vets The Time are led by Morris Day, the only person who came close to upstaging Prince in Purple Rain. Their live show remains energetic and a lot of fun.
Combo Chimbita @ Union Pool
Rooted in Colombia but based in New York, Combo Chimbita take elements of cumbia, 70s funaná, Haitian kompa, salsa, reggae, psych, and other styles and blend it for their own unique style. They play today as part of Union Pool’s free Summer Thunder series. 2-6 PM.
TOKiMONSTA, Kero One, Dumbfoundead @ Central Park SummerStage
SummerStage, in association with Korean Cultural Center New York and MeanRed, presents this free Central Park show headlined by the prolific and increasingly popular LA beatmaker TOKiMONSTA. After this show…

…TOKiMONSTA heads to Good Room for an afterparty, where she’ll surely have the place moving all night.
Andrew Combs, The Kernal, Charlie Whitten @ Union Pool
Andrew Combs’ music is rooted in country but he’s into indie rock too, as his recent covers EP with songs by The Strokes and Radiohead made very clear, and his genre-hopping sound makes for some pretty cool stuff.
Springsteen on Broadway
The Boss continues his sold-out “Springsteen on Broadway” run at the Walter Kerr Theatre, which has now been extended through December. At these shows, Bruce is giving fans shows “that are as personal and as intimate as possible.”
The Stand At Slate NYC! w/ Big Jay Oakerson, Nikki Glaser, Sean Patton, Michael Kosta, Vladimir Caamano, Graham Kay, and More! @ Slate
While comedy club The Stand is between locations (the Union Square space is set to open this fall), The Stand is putting on great standup shows like this one at Slate.
BackFat Variety at Union Hall
Emily Winter (NPR’s Ask Me Another, The New Yorker) and punk musician Larry Mancini host this monthly variety show featuring standup, readings, and more. This month’s show features performances from Josh Gondelman (Last Week Tonight), Kate Willett (This Is Not Happening), Sam Taggart (IFC), Brian Bahe (Orlando Indie Comedy Fest), and Ethan SP (host, Side Door Comedy Show).
