David Byrne, Tune-Yards @ Forest Hills Stadium
After an appearance at Panorama, David Byrne’s acclaimed “untethered” tour finally makes its way to NYC for three hometown shows with Tune-Yards. It’s his most ambitious tour since Stop Making Sense, and there are plenty of Talking Heads songs in the set.
Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Deeper, Clean Machine @ Bowery Ballroom
With three singer-guitarists, Australia’s Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever have hooks for miles and their debut album, Hope Downs, is all hits.
Car Seat Headrest, Naked Giants, Don Babylon @ Brooklyn Steel
Will Toledo and the rest of CSH play their second of two nights at Brooklyn Steel — this one is sold out.
Subhumans, War on Women, All Torn Up, Escasos Recursos @ Knitting Factory Brooklyn
UK anarcho-punk vets Subhumans are still going strong, and though they haven’t released a new album in a while, their live shows are still as confrontational and uncompromising as you’d hope. If you’re going tonight, don’t miss newer band War On Women, who put out the great Capture The Flag this year.
Childish Gambino, Rae Sremmurd @ Madison Square Garden
Donald Glover is saying the next Childish Gambino album will be his last and this current tour will be his last tour with the project. Album details are still TBA, but he dropped a few new singles this year (including the great “This Is America” and its even better video), and he’s been doing a good mix of the new and the old at these shows. This is his second of two MSG shows, both of which are with hitmakers Rae Sremmurd, which is a very strong double bill.
Paul Simon @ Prudential Center
Legendary singer/songwriter Paul Simon is on his “Homeward Bound – The Farewell Tour,” and while he is indeed homeward bound (the tour ends with two MSG shows followed by a final show in Queens), he’s just outside of his hometown to play a Newark show tonight.
FIDLAR, Dilly Dally, NOBRO @ Terminal 5
Party punks FIDLAR and Breeders/Nirvana-ish alt-rockers Dilly Dally are on the road together, and they roll through NYC tonight.
THE THE: The Inertia Variations @ Theatre 80
Ahead of their two NYC shows, The The are screening this documentary about the band The The leader Matt Johnson will be in attendance for a post-screening Q&A, as will bassist James Eller and the film’s director, Johanna St Michaels. 7 PM.
Slapshot, Brick By Brick, Unruly Boys @ The Kingsland
Boston hardcore legends Slapshot — still fronted by founding vocalist Jack “Choke” Kelly — are on the road supporting their new album, Make America Hate Again (out now on Bridge 9). The lyrics are taking on current issues, but the music sounds like classic Slapshot. And they’ll probably play plenty of actual classics tonight too.
Agnes Obel @ Warsaw
Danish singer/songwriter Anges Obel is back in the US, and she brings her unique, appealing songs to Brooklyn’s Warsaw tonight.
The Primals, Vandalizer @ The Safari Room at El Cortez
The Primals is a new supergroup with Darkest Hour frontman John Henry and members of Dead To Fall and The Explosion, but they don’t sound much like any of those bands. Their John Reis-produced debut album All Love Is True Love is out now on Southern Lord and it’s melodic and grungy, kinda like ’90s Foo Fighters or Torche.
Basilica Soundscape: The Haxan Cloak, Nick Zinner, Insect Ark, Lightning Bolt, L’Rain, Hether Fortune, Shopping, Fluct, Prurient, Hermione Hoby, Melissa Tuckey, Yokubari, Photay @ Basilica Hudson
The 2018 edition of Basilica Soundscape continues tonight with a typically disparate group of artists, plus art installations, readings and unique collaborations.
Busta Rhymes, Justine Skye, Natasha Diggs @ Brooklyn Army Terminal
Busta Rhymes had a bit of a comeback thanks to his many contributions to the A Tribe Called Quest reunion album, and the fast-rhyming hip hop vet is staying busy, playing a free hometown show tonight.
Frontline Assembly, The Black Queen, Hide, Kontravoid, Actors @ Irving Plaza
Canadian electro-industrial vets Frontline Assembly headline tonight’s show that’s part of the Cold Waves Festival.
ADULT., Plack Blague, Azar Swan @ Saint Vitus Bar
Not part of Cold Waves but certainly in the same universe is Detroit’s ADULT. who are celebrating the release of their very good new album, This Behavior.
New York Night Train Soul Clap & Dance Off w/ Jonathan Toubin, Jacuzzi Boys, Public Practice, The Saylavees @ Diviera Drive
This month Jonathan Toubin takes his Soul Clap party to Williamsburg’s Diviera Drive with Florida’s Jacuzzi Boys and Brooklyn’s Public Practice.
Terry Riley, Gavin Rayna Russom (of LCD Soundsystem) @ National Sawdust
Experimental composer Terry Riley and his son Gyan Riley collaborate with LCD Soundsystem synthmaster Gavin Rayna Russom at this performance. “From commercial pop to classical Indian Kirana gharana, the real-time merging of these unique talents promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime musical experience.”
Maria Bamford @ The Bell House
It’s a shame that Maria’s terrific Amazon series, Lady Dynamite, didn’t get picked up for a third season — it was a truly original show from a truly original comedian.
Different Energies @ The Duplex Caberet and Piano
Fumi Abe and Mary Beth Barone couldn’t have more different energies – Fumi’s comedy is physical and emotive, observational and conversational. Mary Beth, on the other hand, is reserved and contained, with a slight Sarah Silverman coyness to her self-described bitchy sense of humor. At The Duplex, see both of them perform thirty minute sets back to back, for two truly different energies in one show.
Justin Vivian Bond: A Star is Borned @ Joe’s Pub
Kiki & Herb cocreator Justin Vivian Bond brings this new show which stemmed “from a comic strip – called The Adventures of Chipra – created by Mx Bond’s 7th grade classmate who was all too well aware of the young ‘Chip’ Bond’s obsession with Barbra Streisand. A Star is Borned plumbs the depths of the over-the-top classic Hollywood melodrama ‘A Star is Born’ and the careers of the three queer icons who have made the role their own – until now!”
