What's going on Saturday?

Wax Idols @ Baby's All Right, 2015
Wax Idols @ Baby’s All Right, 2015 (more by Amanda Hatfield)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Governors Ball Day 2 @ Randall’s Island
It’s day 2 of NYC music festival Governors Ball, and there’s plenty of exciting stuff today: singer/songwriter Holly Miranda, heavy shoegazers Nothing, indie rocker Torres, Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr, bass wizard Thundercat, rap legends De La Soul, punk greats Against Me!, the fun sisterly trio Haim, R&B boundary-pusher Miguel, synth popsters Miike Snow and Purity Ring, and arena-gazers M83.

McCoy Tyner, Ron Carter, Roy Haynes @ Central Park SummerStage
Legendary jazz pianist McCoy Tyner, who was a longtime member of John Coltrane’s band (among many other projects), plays a free show tonight that’s part of the SummerStage series and the Blue Note Jazz Festival.

Come to Grief, Isla, Belus, Plagues, Sunrot @ Acheron
Boston sludge legends (Come to) Grief were supposed to reunite again for the Haunted Hotel Records 13th anniversary show in 2015, but they ended up dropping off. They’re giving it another go tonight.

Eagles of Death Metal, Thelma and The Sleaze @ Warsaw
Tongue in cheek, sex-obsessed rockers Eagles of Death Metal headline a GovBall aftershow at Warsaw tonight.

Wiki, Princess Nokia, Psychoegyptian, EU1OGY, Night Doll (DJ), SHYBOI (DJ) @ Trans Pecos
New York rapper Wiki has been on a roll lately, releasing very promising music both on his own and as a member of RatKing.

Tengger Cavalry, Wilderun, Tungsten @ The Marlin Room at Webster Hall
Mongolian folk-metal band Tengger Cavalry incorporate a trad-folk sound with Mongolian stylings, throat singing, and some pretty heavy straight-up thrash metal. Their live show will likely be one you’ll remember.

CJ Ramone, Broken Gold @ Knitting Factory
CJ was a Ramone from 1989 to 1996, and more recently he’s been putting out solo material that’s actually pretty good. Broken Gold is Ian from the Riverboat Gamblers’ new band.

Shellshag, Big Eyes, Vacation, Intrepid @ Suburbia
Scrappy Cincinnati pop punks Vacation play two NYC shows this weekend. This one’s with two of their great Brooklyn-based Don Giovanni labelmates, Shellshag and Big Eyes.

Jorma Kaukonen @ City Winery
As a member of Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna, and as a solo artist, Jorma Kaukonen has been a remarkably consistent force in the rock/blues/folk world for almost 50 years. This is his first of two sold-out City Winery shows this weekend.

Whitney, EZTV, Hoops @ Market Hotel
When Smith Westerns split, Max Kakacek and Julien Ehrlich formed Whitney, leaving their old band’s glam sound behind in favor of laid-back, melodic country rock. This is their last club show of their NYC visit and play Governors Ball on Sunday.

Wax Idols, King Woman, Primitive Weapons @ Saint Vitus
Wax Idols have transformed from garage rock, to dark post-punk, to more anthemic sounds on last year’s American Tragic. Her tour with King Woman (former Whirr singer Kristina Esfandiari) pulls into Vitus with Primitive Weapons, making for a rock-solid triple bill.

Guerilla Toss, Giant Claw, PC Worship, Palberta, Disco Phantom @ Palisades
Here’s an appealing bill of DIY regulars, including the funky/punky Guerilla Toss and the noise-with-attitude that is PC Worship.

Holly Miranda, Jack and Eliza @ Arlene’s Grocery
One of the many Governors Ball afterparties, this one featuring the powerful pipes of Holy Miranda and winsome duo Jack & Eliza.

Albert Hammond Jr., Public Access TV @ Brooklyn Bowl
The Strokes played GovBall last night and tonight guitarist Albert Hammond plays this show with newer NYC band Public Access TV (who certainly own a copy of Is This It).

Nap Eyes, Mega Bog @ Union Pool
It’s the first of Union Pool’s free “Summer Thunder” shows of the season, today featuring Nova Scotia’s Nap Eyes who make superior post-VU rock a la Galaxie 500. Mega Bog, who moved here from Portland, opens. Free, 2PM start.

The Fugs, The Last Poets @ Bowery Electric
Sixties outsider band The Fugs, who were part beat poetic, part shock tactics, still play today with Ed Sanders still fronting the band.

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones @ The Capitol Theatre
Since the ’80s, Bela Fleck has been stretching the boundaries of what is considered banjo music, having made records in bluegrass and jazz.
