King Tuff at Music Hall of Williamsburg
King Tuff at MHOW in 2018 (more by Em Grey)

What's going on Saturday?

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Mineral, Tancred @ Elsewhere
Mineral released two of the best and most influential indie-emo albums of the late ’90s and then called it quits, until they finally reunited for live shows in 2014. They went back into hibernation after that, but returned this year with their first new songs in 20 years and a tour to celebrate their 25th anniversary as a band. No word on if they plan to stick around after this, so catch ’em while you can. And Tancred’s opening set is worth seeing too.

King Tuff, Stonefield @ Bowery Ballroom
As King Tuff, Kyle Thomas makes music that’s part garage rock, part power-pop with a little bubblegum stuck to the bottom of his shoe.

The Lemon Twigs, Jackie Cohen, Rubber Band Gun @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
The Lemon Twigs took a left turn in 2017 with their oddball concept album/musical Go to School. We would not be surprised to learn they’ve record three new albums since.

The Jayhawks, Sean Rowe @ Brooklyn Bowl
Americana vets The Jayhawks released Back Roads and Abandoned Motels last year, which featured songs frontman Gary Louris had originally written for other artists like The Dixie Chicks, Natalie Maines, Jakob Dylan, and others. This is their second of two nights at Brooklyn Bowl.

Cam’ron, DonMonique, Corey Lee, Phil Walker @ SOB’s
Cam’ron and the rest of Dipset just released their first album in 14 years this past November, but Cam is still finding time to focus on his solo career too. Tonight’s show is with rising Brooklyn rapper DonMonique, who’s fresh off releasing Black Kate Moss (coincidentally, the same week Dipset’s new album came out).

Azure Ray with Greg Farley and Brad Armstrong @ The Bell House
Indie/dream pop vets (and former Saddle Creek band) Azure Ray returned in 2018 with their first new release in six years, the Waves EP, and tonight they’re in NYC to support it.

Kim Phuc, Guilt Parade, Truth Cult, Outskirts @ Brooklyn Bazaar
Kim Phuc (who share members with The Gotobeds) haven’t played NYC since reuniting to open for The Marked Men at Saint Vitus five years ago, but they’re back tonight.

MØ, ABRA @ Hammerstein Ballroom
Alt-pop singer MØ is on the road supporting her 2018 LP Forever Neverland (which features Empress Of, Charli XCX, and Diplo), and opening tonight’s show is avant-R&B singer ABRA, who’s worth catching.

Matana Roberts, Haley Fohr, Suzanne Langille (with Daniel Carter, Neel Murgai, Loren Connors) @ Issue Project Room
Issue Project Room’s 2019 season begins tonight with jazz/avant-pop artist Matana Roberts debuting a new iteration of her “I Call America Series,” “an open-ended mixed media exploration of a sound framework she has been working on since 2015.” The lineup also includes Circuit des Yeux’s Haley Fohr presenting her solo voice work “Wordless Music,” and Suzanne Langille performing with overtone/throat singer Neel Murgai, experimental guitarist Loren Connors, and saxophonist Daniel Carter.

Moor Mother @ The Kitchen
Experimental hip hop, electronics, noise and more artist Moor Mother, who won The Kitchen’s inaugural Emerging Artist Award, returns to the space tonight for a night of “poetry and special guests.”

Alejandro Escovedo @ City Winery
The great Alejandro Escovedo continues his annual winter City Winery residency tonight.

Bodega, Public Practice, Grim Streaker, Special Guests @ ALPHAVILLE
A pretty great lineup of local bands, headlined by arch postpunks Bodega, the very danceable Public Practice and some unannounced “special guests.”

Paul Collins’ Beat, American Darlings, 1-800-Band @ The Kingsland
As a member of Nerves and The Beat, Paul Collins’ power-pop bonafides are air-tight. The rest of the bands tonight are in much the same spirit.

Shilpa Ray, Mary Vision, Kyle Avallone @ The Safari Room at El Cortez
With a harmonium-powered, smoky, dark sound, Shilpa Ray is a one-of-a-kind talent and is always worth catching live.

Prince Daddy and The Hyena, Macseal, Strange Ranger, Bad Heaven @ Baby’s All Right
This is a cool bill all around of indie/emo/lo-fi/DIY/etc, and it’s worth getting there early for opener Bad Heaven (the new band of John Galm from Snowing).

Ana Tijoux, Carol C @ Le Poisson Rouge
Long-running, genre-defying artist Ana Tijoux combines hip hop, jazz, Spanish guitar, and more, and she brings her unique sound back to NYC tonight.

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead @ The Capitol Theatre
Joe Russo’s Almost Dead are one of the most beloved Grateful Dead tributes going (and they’ve jammed with actual Dead members). Tonight they continue a sold-out run at the Capitol Theatre.
