What's going on Saturday (4/20)?

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Amanda Palmer @ Beacon Theatre
After a seven year gap between solo albums, Amanda Palmer returned this year with the wonderful There Will Be No Intermission, and her stop at Beacon Theatre tonight marks the halfway point in her extensive North American theater tour.

The Black Lips, Quintron & Miss Pussycat, Wooing @ Bowery Ballroom
It’s a killer double bill of southern-fried garage rock with the wild men of The Black Lips and the party-forward Quintron & Miss Pussycat.

NY Night Train Soul Clap & Dance-Off w/ Sheer Mag @ Brooklyn Bazaar
Philly punks Sheer Mag kicked off their US tour in Baltimore last night, and they’ll make a special appearance at Jonathan Toubin’s recurring NY Night Train Soul Clap & Dance-Off show at Brooklyn Bazaar.

Gus Dapperton, Spencer @ Elsewhere
After gaining buzz with a few big singles, indie pop musician Gus Dapperton released his long-awaited debut LP this week, and he’ll be bringing many of those new songs to Brooklyn’s Elsewhere tonight for an album release show.

Tommy Genesis, Amrit @ Elsewhere
Singer/rapper Tommy Genesis is gaining buzz for her unique flows and creative, bouncy production, as heard on her debut album which dropped late last year.

Freddie Gibbs, Wiki, Kota The Friend @ Hornblower Infinity Yacht
While we wait for Freddie Gibbs to drop Bandana, his sequel collaboration LP with Madlib, he’s got this 4/20-themed cruise show, billed as “A Celebration of Cannabis culture and lifestyle aboard a 4-story luxury yacht, brought to you by Move Forward Music and SOB’s.” Joining Freddie will be two talented NYC rappers, Wiki and Kota The Friend.

Laura Jane Grace and the Devouring Mothers, Mercy Union, Control Top @ House of Independents
Against Me! singer Laura Jane Grace put out her first solo album last year, Bought To Rot, and it strikes a great balance between the punky stuff you expect from Against Me! and the more singer/songwriter side you expect from a solo debut. Laura and her backing band The Devouring Mothers (including Against Me! drummer Atom Willard) are also great live, and this show has two worthy openers: Gaslight Anthem/Scandals offshoot Mercy Union and Philly punk trio Control Top, whose recently released Covert Contracts is one of 2019’s finest punk debuts.

James Murphy, Nina Kraviz, Justin Cudmore @ Knockdown Center
LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy will DJ this special three-stage event, alongside Russian techno musician Nina Kraviz and Brooklyn electronic artist Justin Cudmore. Among the artists appearing on the other stages include DFA signees Shit Robot and Museum of Love (featuring LCD Soundsystem’s Pat Mahoney), in addition to producers Fabe and Mike Huckaby.

Half Japanese, Danielson, Cushions @ (le) poisson rouge
Prolific DIY cult group Half Japanese, who released Invincible back in February play tonight with another cult act, Danielson.

Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso U.F.O, Yamantaka//Sonic Titan @ Market Hotel
Japanese psych rock greats Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso U.F.O., who recently revamped lineup for the first time in years, are currently on their regular spring pilgrimage to North America, out this time with Canada’s Yamantaka//Sonic Titan. This is their first of three NYC-area shows.

Knyfe Hyts, Honey, Chat Logs, PC Worship, Headroom, dphokcheong 2000 @ Secret Project Robot
Secret Project Robot will leave its current location very very soon and here’s a good opportunity to visit before it does, the Macrodose 4/20 Festival with a whole bunch of great local freaks and punks.

CCB & Friends 420 Celebration: H.R. (Bad Brains), Cannabis Cup Band, Human Rights, Rude Boy George, Funkface, and more! @ Sony Hall
The High Times Cannabis Cup Band have been a staple of the NYC reggae scene for nearly two decades, and this 4/20 celebration show notably features Bad Brains vocalist HR, along with several other reggae acts.

Bush Tetras, Beechwood, Gold Dime @ The Bowery Electric
NYC post-punk icons and creep-fighters Bush Tetras are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year and are still sharp and jagged.

Live From Here with Chris Thile: Josh Ritter, CÈcile McLorin Salvant, Mike Lawrence, Gaby Moreno @ Town Hall
This week’s edition of Chris Thile’s Minnesota Public Radio show Live From Here welcomes veteran singer-songwriter Josh Ritter, jazz vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant, comedian Mike Lawrence, and Guatemalan songwriter Gaby Moreno.

The Movielife @ Amityville Music Hall (two shows)
Long Island melodic hardcore greats The Movielife are revisiting two of their best and most-loved releases, 2001’s The Movielife Has A Gambling Problem EP and 2003’s Forty Hour Train Back to Penn, and playing them in full on this tour. Making the tour even more exciting is an opening set from Piebald frontman Travis Shettel.
