Irish songwriter Glen Hansard, still best known for the film Once, released his latest LP This Wild Willing earlier this year, which might be among his best work yet.
Governors Ball 2019 @ Randall’s Island
The annual Governors Ball festival continues at Randall’s Island Park today, with headliners Florence and The Machine, The 1975, and Major Lazer, with other great acts including Kacey Musgraves, Vince Staples, Lord Huron, Denzel Curry, U.S. Girls, Ravyn Lenae, and more.
Bikini Kill, Sammus @ Terminal 5
After a twenty year absence, Bikini Kill are back and, following four LA shows earlier this spring, they continue their four-show NYC run tonight at Terminal 5. We’re psyched.
Bjork (Cornucopia) @ The Shed
Tonight is your last chance to see Bjork’s “most elaborately staged concert to date.” Cornucopia is an audiovisual feast, presenting the songs of Utopia to the accompaniment of lush floral imagery and a septet of flutists.
L7, Le Butcherettes @ Elsewhere Hall
Reunited grunge greats L7 play conclude their two-show run at Elsewhere in support of this year’s Scatter The Rats (their first album in 20 years), with very solid openers Le Butcherettes. They’ll also stop at Rough Trade earlier in the day for a signing of the new LP.
Youssou N’Dour @ BAM: Brooklyn Academy of Music
Senegalese singer and world music icon Youssou N’Dour stops in Brooklyn as part of a two-night stand at BAM, accompanied by his backing band the Super Étoile de Dakar; this is night two.
New York Guitar Festival @ Brookfield Place Plaza
New York Guitar Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2019, and this year’s edition pays tribute to pioneering blues guitarist Memphis Minnie. Today’s free show at Brookfield Place honoring her legacy, featuring performances from Fantastic Negrito, Rafiq Bhatia, Nicole Atkins with Binky Griptite, and many more.
Soccer Mommy, Pom Pom Squad @ Brooklyn Bazaar
Before she hits the Governors Ball stage on Sunday, Soccer Mommy plays this intimate show at Brooklyn Bazaar as part of the GovBall After Dark series.
Teen Daze, Instupendo @ (le) poisson rouge
After releasing his newest album Bioluminescence back in April, electronic/ambient musician Teen Daze heads to LPR as part of his current spring tour.
Madame Gandhi, Amber Valentine, Linda Labeija, New York City’s Gay Men’s Chorus @ Brooklyn Museum
As part of the Brooklyn Museum’s recurring “First Saturdays” series, it’s a special, all-evening celebration of the 50th anniversary of Stonewall (and the beginning of Pride Month), featuring several prominent artists and activists within the pro-LGBTQ+ movement.
Rick Ross, Statik Selektah, DJ Evil Dee @ Bushwick Collective Block Party
Bushwick street art group Bushwick Collective is throwing its eighth-annual Block Party today, featuring live music, such as a headlining performance from Rick Ross, and includes hand-selected local food trucks, a merchant market of vendors selling original art, prints, jewelry, clothing and more, face and body painting, meet and greets with “old school graffiti legends,” and live-painting from over 40 street and graffiti artists.
Jon Glaser @ Littlefield (two shows)
The great Jon Glaser, of Delocated, Parks & Rec and other shows, “tries out some classic bitz to see if they might work for a live special! Maybe they will! Maybe they won’t! Come find out! With special guest Scott Adsit!”
Sunflower Bean, Native Sun @ Mercury Lounge
Following their GovBall set earlier in the day, hazy indie pop trio Sunflower Bean will bring their brand of catchy, jangly melodies to Mercury Lounge tonight for a far more intimate show.
The Mavericks @ Stone Pony
Nashville-based country/folk/etc band The Mavericks head to Asbury Park, NJ for their first of three NYC-area stops, celebrating their 30th anniversary as a band.
Oozing Wound, Conduit, Brandy @ Union Pool
Chicago noise metal band play their first of two Brooklyn shows tonight, supporting the recently-released High Anxiety.
Kaytranada @ Villain
Producer/DJ Kaytranada plays this very intimate post-GovBall show at Villain, which should make for a fun, lively late night show.
Craig Wedren (ex-Shudder to Think) @ Zula Wines
You may think it’s a little odd to see Shudder to Think frontman Craig Wedren playing a Park Slope wine shop, but Zula Wines is owned by Amy Miles, who Craig has played with many times, and Amy Poehler (he did the music for Wet Hot American Summer which she was in).
Ian Hunter and The Rant Band @ City Winery
Following a tour earlier this year with the 1974 lineup of Mott The Hoople, singer Ian Hunter is celebrating his 80th birthday with a run of solo City Winery shows, which kicks off tonight.
Deicide, Origin, Jungle Rot, The Absence @ Gramercy Theatre
Veteran band Deicide headline this night of death metal, with support from Origin, Jungle Rot, and the Absence, as part of their “Origins of Blasphemy” tour.
Yanni @ Lunt-Fontanne Theatre
Composer and new age megastar Yanni has played the Acropolis but gets up close and personal with this Broadway run at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre (which recently hosted Morrissey), where he’ll perform stripped-down piano renditions of his PBS favorites, plus stories about his long career and creative process, and an audience Q&A.
Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band @ PNC Bank Arts Center
Arguably the king of Midwest heartland rock, Bob Seger brings is playing all his many hits on this farewell tour.
