Parquet Courts, Sachiko Kanenobu, ARP, Prince of Queens (DJ Set) @ Central Park SummerStage
Parquet Courts remain one of the most vital bands of today’s indie climate, and they headline this free, diverse Central Park SummerStage show, which also features veteran Japanese folk artist Sachiko Kanenobu, and new-agey synthpop artst ARP.
NOTS, Olivia Neutron-John, SIGNAL @ ALPHAVILLE
Memphis-based synth punks NOTS have been seeing the number three a ton recently; the band recently began performing as a trio, and they head to Alphaville tonight to perform songs from their recent third LP, appropriately titled 3.
The Soul Rebels @ Baby’s All Right
New Orleans brass band The Soul Rebels are constantly busy and they’ve also made a name for themselves as collaborators of artists like Nas, Talib Kweli, GZA, DMX, Portugal. The Man and more. They’re playing two small NYC shows this weekend, this being the second.
Triptych (composed by Bryce Dessner) @ BAM: Brooklyn Academy of Music
Bryce Dessner composed the music for Triptych which is inspired by the life and art of Robert Mapplethorpe and features ensemble Roomful of Teeth.
The Mavericks @ Beacon Theatre
Long-running country/folk/etc band The Mavericks are celebrating their 30th anniversary as a band with a special North American tour, which concludes at Beacon Theatre tonight.
Limp Wrist, Lebenden Toten, Special Interest, Exotica @ Brooklyn Bazaar
Philly queercore icons Limp Wrist and Portland noise punks Lebenden Toten both made comebacks with new 2017 albums, and shows are still fairly rare for both bands. So it’s very exciting that they’re in NYC together for two gigs, this being the second.
Perry Farrell’s Kind Heaven Orchestra @ City Winery
Perry Farrell just released his first solo album in 18 years, Kind Heaven, which is also the name of this new Las Vegas hotel and entertainment destination… so expect a little razzle dazzle tonight.
Angel Du$t, Gouge Away, Glitterer, Muscle Before Paradise @ Elsewhere
This is a killer triple-billed punk tour with the jangle pop-leaning Angel Du$t, hardcore crushers Gouge Away, and indie rock-oriented Title Fight offshoot Glitterer. This NYC show also has local support from post-punks Muscle Before Paradise (ex-Old Wounds).
Little Boots (DJ set), Sammy Bananas, Uffie (DJ set) @ Elsewhere
It’s a groovy triple header at Elsewhere tonight, consisting of DJ sets from UK electropop songwriter Little Boots and synth/disco artist Uffie (remember “Pop the Glock”?), with an additional performance from Brooklyn producer Sammy Bananas.
Weeknight, Monograms, Tijuana Taxi, Clone (mem. ex-DIIV, Dead Leaf Echo) @ Gran Torino
Moody synthpop band Weeknight headline this show at Williamsburg’s Gran Torino (formerly Diviera Drive) that also features the live debut of new band Clone that includes members of DIIV, Bodega and Dead Leaf Echo.
Oneida, IE, Matt Mehlan, Ka Baird @ H0L0
Brooklyn-based noisy psych rockers Oneida play this hometown show, alongside fellow NYC acts Matt Mehlan and Ka Baird, and Minnesota-based quintet IE.
Frankie Cosmos, Ian Sweet @ Industry City
Former Sub Pop labelmates Frankie Cosmos and Ian Sweet head to the Industry City courtyard, as part of the venue’s City Farm Presents Summer Series.
Sick of It All, Snapcase, Slapshot, La Armada @ Irving Plaza
If you like hardcore of any kind, from any era, this bill is absolutely stacked. NYHC vets Sick Of It All and Boston hardcore vets Slapshot are here, plus Buffalo metalcore greats Snapcase (who have been working on new music), and Chicago-via-Dominican Republic rippers La Armada kick things off.
‘Slate Day’ podcast fest w/ Yo La Tengo, more
Slate.com is hosting their “Slate Day” festival at both The Highline Park at 16th St and the SVA Theater, set to feature “live podcasts, delightful experiences, and lots of special guests.” There’s musical performances from Yo La Tengo and Friends Who Folk, and podcast tapings galore.
Ibeyi, Sudan Archives, Orion Sun @ Prospect Park Bandshell
Tonight, the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival hosts a very cool free show featuring two of the most acclaimed indie/soul crossover acts of late, Ibeyi and Sudan Archives. Philly’s Orion Sun opens.
Bill Orcutt, Okkyung Lee @ Public Records
Guitar improv great Bill Orcutt and NYC-via South Korean composer Okkyung Lee head to the recently-opened “record bar”/performance space Public Records in Gowanus, Brooklyn tonight.
The Pietasters @ Rocks Off Concert Cruises
Ska is alive and well and having a real moment right now, so what better time than the present to catch DC vets The Pietasters on a boat?
Cavity AD, Worse, Gozu @ Saint Vitus
Cavity AD is the currently active version of Miami sludge vets Cavity (who once shared members with Torche/Floor and Black Cobra). The current lineup features Rene Barge (vocals), Dan Gorostiaga (bass), and Ed Matus (guitar), Andrew McLees (guitar) and Bryan Adams (drums), and they’re not just a nostalgia thing but have a new album out this year.
Noisem, Organ Dealer, Concussion @ The Safari Room at El Cortez
Metallic hardcore rippers Noisem recently had a major lineup change (including the replacement of their vocalist), but that didn’t hurt their sound. New album Cease To Exist is even more filthy than anything they’d done before it.
Blue Oyster Cult @ The Space at Westbury
Metal and hard rock as we know it wouldn’t be the same without Blue Oyster Cult, who are still treating crowds to the classics today.
David Nance Band, Long Hots @ Union Pool
Omaha’s David Nance makes powerhouse heartland rock, full of swagger and melody, riffs and hooks. If you dig The War on Drugs, Kurt Vile and Neil Young, check David out.
Empire of the Sun @ Webster Hall
Relive the innocent days of 2009 when Obama was still fresh in the White House and Empire of the Sun’s “Walking on a Dream” was inescapable. They’re celebrating their debut album, which that song is from, at their Webster Hall run, which wraps up tonight.
Alexisonfire, Drug Church @ Terminal 5
Canadian post-hardcore band Alexisonfire are reunited and in the midst of a comeback, with some new singles out and this tour. They’ve got great openers lined up for this run, varying by date. Tonight’s with Drug Church, whose Cheer was one of the best punk albums of last year.
Justus Proffit, Dig Nitty, Dirty Buyer, Turtlenecked @ Trans-Pecos
Justus Proffit first caught our attention after releasing a collaborative EP with Jay Som last year, but he put out a solo album this year that proves he’s a worthy artist in his own right too.
Remo Drive, Slow Pulp, Slow Bullet @ Bowery Ballroom
Remo Drive recently released their new album Natural, Everyday Degradation, which is a very sharp, catchy collection of indie-punk songs that anyone looking forward to that Joyce Manor/Saves The Day tour should be excited about.
Underdog @ The Kingsland
’80s-era NYHC band Underdog reunited a few years back but their shows are still few and far between, and any chance to catch them is worth taking.
Dio Returns (hologram) @ Paramount Theatre
The hologram tour continues to be a thing and right now legendary heavy metal powerhouse Dio is getting the treatment. This tour hits Asbury Park tonight and Long Island tomorrow.
