What's going on Saturday?

Hailu Mergia on board the Liberty Belle Cruise
Hailu Mergia on board the Liberty Belle Cruise (more by P Squared)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Whitney @ Sole East
Whitney’s heavily-anticipated second LP Forever Turned Around is out next month, and you can expect to hear some new material at this free, strippedd-down acoustic show in Montauk, as part of Murmrr Summer Series, before they return to the NYC area later this fall.

Sebadoh, Eleanor Friedberger @ Asbury Lanes
One of the great sad sack self-deprecating voices in indie rock, Lou Barlow continues to make great music (along with Jason Lowenstein and Bob D’Amico) as heard on their most recent album, Act Surprised.

Iron Maiden, The Raven Age @ Barclays Center
Heavy metal legends Iron Maiden recently began the North & South American leg of their “Legacy of the Beast” tour, and, with no new album to support, the tour has seen Maiden sticking to a greatest hits set. They wrap up a two-night stand at Barclays Center tonight.

St. Vincent (DJ set — as St Vicious) @ The Surf Lodge (Montauk)
St Vincent has occasionally played one-off DJ sets in the past, most recently while opening for Beck at the Hollywood Bowl earlier this year under the name St. Vicious, and she’ll do the same tonight at Montauk’s The Surf Lodge.

Pixx, Grace Ives @ Elsewhere
UK-based artist Pixx dropped her sophomore LP Small Mercies back in June, which dealt with her views on romantic love, as well as love from religious faith. She supports the album tonight, accompanied by NYC-based songwriter Grace Ives.

The Get Up Kids, Great Grandpa @ House of Independents
Emo vets The Get Up Kids recently released their new album Problems, and it’s more in line with their 1999 fan favorite Something To Write Home About than any other album they’d done since. It’s very good stuff, and tonight’s show should be lots of fun too.

Hailu Mergia, Kassa Overall, Brandee Younger @ Industry City
Ethiopian keyboardist and accordionist Hailu Mergia led instrumental funk/jazz group Walias Band in the ‘70s and continued making music on his own after he immigrated to the U.S. and became a taxi driver. He was rediscovered in this decade and is now playing to the biggest audiences on this continent yet.

Actress, Susie Ibarra, Speaker Music @ Issue Project Room
It’s been a while since UK producer Actress released a solo LP (he did put out a collaborative album with London Symphony Orchestra last year), but he’s continuing to play shows, including this Brooklyn date with composer Susie Ibarra, and producer Speaker Music (aka DeForrest Brown Jr.).

Warm Up w/ Michael Brun, AJ Tracey, Plastician, Rosa Pistola, Fuego, SCRAAATCH, Marginal Men @ MoMA PS1
The dance parties under the sun in MoMA PS1’s courtyard continue with this week’s edition of Warm Up, headlined by Haitian DJ Michael Brun and also featuring rising UK rapper AJ Tracey, Mexico City DJ Rosa Pistola, Dominican singer/rapper Fuego, and more.

Fruit Bats, Air Waves @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Last week, Eric D Johnson’s project Fruit Bats released their first album for Merge, Gold Past Life, and this Brooklyn date is part of their extensive North American tour, which runs into the fall.

Las Rosas, Rockaway Beatch (Ramones cover band ft. Tall Juan), Native Sun @ Rippers
Las Rosas and Tall Juan played together at Brooklyn’s Market Hotel yesterday, and they’ll return to the area for this Rockaway Beach show, which features Tall Juan’s punny Ramones cover band Rockaway Beatch.

Nick Zinner’s “41 Strings” symphony @ Rockefeller Center
Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Nick Zinner first debuted his “41 Strings” composition several years ago, and today he’s bringing it to NYC for a grandiose, very special event at Rockefeller Center. Zinner brought along some indie rock heavyweights to help him perform the piece, including his YYYs bandmate Brian Chase, Interpol’s Paul Banks, LCD Soundsystem’s Nancy Whang, TV on the Radio’s Jaleel Bunton, and several others.

Loma Prieta, Jeromes Dream, massa nera, foxtails @ Saint Vitus Bar
Connecticut screamo vets Jeromes Dream recently released their first album in 18 years, and now they’re supporting it on tour with a great, comparatively newer screamo band, Loma Prieta. Openers vary by date, and tonight’s show is with two worthy, local-ish bands: NJ’s Massa Nera, and CT’s Foxtails.

Slick Rick, DJ Chuck Chillout @ Soundview Park
Hip hop legend Slick Rick plays this free show at Queens’ Soundview Park, as part of SummerStage’s 2019 concert lineup.

Kevin Devine, SCR, Lauren West @ The Capitol Theatre
Kevin Devine has been busy this year with Bad Books, his collaborative project with Manchester Orchestra, but now that they’ve got a gap in their tour dates, Kevin is playing this intimate one-off show on his own just outside of NYC.

Dreamcrusher, Bloated Subhumans, Conduit, Leper Jenny @ The Glove
NYC outfit Dreamcrusher headlines this night of loud, punky industrial acts at The Glove, which also includes Brooklyn-based bands Conduit and Leper Jenny, and noisy Delaware act Bloated Subhumans.

Tombs, IATT, East of the Wall, Sunrot, Winter Nights @ The Kingsland
It’s a pretty stacked bill of Northeast metal bands, with sludge from Tombs and Sunrot, blackened prog from IATT, wacky prog from East of the Wall, and melodeath from Winter Nights.

The Avengers @ The Safari Room at El Cortez
San Francisco punk greats The Avengers — which still feature founding members Penelope Houston and Greg Ingraham — are here for what is a very intimate show.

ESCAPE-ISM, TV Baby, Cumgirl8 @ Union Pool
Ian Svenonius is a true original and utterly magnetic frontman who eats, breathes and sleeps rock n’ roll, whether it’s with Nation of Ulysses, The Make-Up, Chain and the Gang or on his own with a guitar and a cassette player as he is in ESCAPE-ISM.

The Sidekicks, Queen Of Jeans, Victory Garden, Innerlove. @ Amityville Music Hall
Indie rock bands The Sidekicks and Queen of Jeans have been on a tour supporting The Menzingers, but tonight they take a night off to play a Long Island show of their own. The Sidekicks are still supporting last year’s Happiness Hours, and Queen of Jeans will be supporting their promising, upcoming album If you’re not afraid, I’m not afraid.

Barry Manilow @ Lunt-Fontanne Theatre
Born and raised in Williamsburg (take that, Karen O), Barry went on to write the songs that made the whole world sing (even if he didn’t write “I Write the Songs”). Like Morrissey before him, he’s doing a short run at the La Fontanne.

Chris Forsyth, Garcia Peoples, Dire Wolves, Weak Signal @ Market Hotel
Chris Forsyth w/ Garcia Peoples, Dire Wolves, Weak Signal @ Market Hotel
Chris Forsyth has a jammy sound that sort of finds the middle ground between Television and the Grateful Dead, and tonight he plays a collaborative set with his pals Garcia Peoples. Also on the bill is trippy band Dire Wolves, whose name is another Dead reference.
