What's going on Saturday?
You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…
The Original Misfits, Rancid, The Damned @ Madison Square Garden
This is the Misfits’ first NYC show since Glenn Danzig, Jerry Only, and Doyle reunited as “The Original Misfits” (with former Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo and rhythm guitarist Acey Slade), and Glenn says it’ll also be the band’s last show ever. So catch them while you can, and expect an onslaught of Misfits classics just in time for Halloween. Making this show even more appealing, Rancid (who were definitely influenced by the Misfits) and The Damned (who probably influenced the Misfits) are opening. That is one seriously stacked punk bill.
Steely Dan (The Nightfly) @ Beacon Theatre
We miss Walter Becker, but Donald Fagen is brining the Steely Dan band back to Beacon Theater for another run of shows, most of which are centered around a theme or single album. Tonight might be seen as controversial as they’ll perform Donald Fagen’s (admittedly very good) solo debut The Nightfly plus a second set of hits.
Octfest @ Knockdown Center
Pitchfork, along with their beer-centric sister site October, have partnered for the third-annual OctFest in NYC, which happens this year at Queens’ Knockdown Center. Today’s headliners are Parquet Courts, alongside other great acts including Screaming Females, Mogwai, Iceage, Lower Dens, Duster, METZ, and more.
Luna (performing Bewitched), Versus @ Bowery Ballroom
Luna are on a tour where they’re playing a variety of their albums in full, and tonight is the second of a few NYC shows, and will perform their great second album, Bewitched. Fellow ’90s survivors Versus open.
Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein (performing the music of Stranger Things) @ Brooklyn Steel
Netflix’s Stranger Things wouldn’t be complete without its thrilling, nostalgic synth score from composers Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein (who make up half of S U R V I V E), and they’ll bring the show’s most memorable musical motifs to Brooklyn Steel for a special live show.
Robert Glasper: Stevie Wonder Tribute featuring Luke James @ Blue Note (two shows)
Robert Glasper continues his month-long residency at the Blue Note Jazz Club, and tonight’s shows are part of a run of Stevie Wonder tributes with guest singer Luke James. Glasper is also known for bringing out other surprise guests at these shows… let’s see if he does tonight.
Brodequin, Encenathrakh, Thaetas @ Brooklyn Bazaar
Tennessee death metal vets Brodequin head to Brooklyn Bazaar tonight for their first NYC show in 18 years. Support comes from a pair of death metal newcomers, Encenathrakh and Thaetas.
David Byrne’s American Utopia @ Hudson Theatre
David Byrne has retooled his acclaimed “untethered” 2018 for the Broadway stage and while the setlist and arrangements are much like what they were on his tour, songs are now threaded together with new monologues from Byrne, making for a much more theatrical experience.
Jimmy Whispers, Lionlimb, Samantha Urbani @ Baby’s All Right
Chicago’s Jimmy Whispers hangs with folks like Part Time’s David Ioca, Dent May and Mac DeMarco and makes similarly nostalgic pop. He’s in town opening for Oh Sees and plays this headline show tonight.
Doomsquad, Tmboy, Lily and Horn Horse @ C’mon Everybody
Miss the early-’00s indie dance explosion of DFA Records, Out Hud and Liars? Toronto’s DOOMSQUAD have that vibe, with a dose of early-’80s artiness (think Will Powers). Their new album Let Yourself Be Seen is excellent.
Altin Gün, Ghost King, Wooing @ Elsewhere Zone One
Amsterdam-based Turkish psych band Altin Gün got signed to ATO after King Gizzard championed them and they just wrapped up a tour with Tame Impala.
Obituary, Abbath, Midnight, Devil Master @ Gramercy Theatre
This is a killer bill all around for metal, and with a nice amount of musical diversity too. It’s co-headlined by death metal lifers Obituary and black metal greats Abbath (the current project of former Immortal frontman Abbath), and support comes from Cleveland speedsters Midnight and Philly blackened punks Devil Master.
Mudhoney, Kid Congo Powers & The Pink Monkey Birds @ Market Hotel
Seattle rock greats Mudhoney began their 2019 tour earlier this month in Jersey City, and they’ll wrap up the tour tonight with another NYC-area show at Brooklyn’s Market Hotel.
Jim James (of My Morning Jacket), Teddy Abrams (Louisville Orchestra) @ McKittrick Hotel
My Morning Jacket’s Jim James and Teddy Abrams’ collaborative orchestral LP, The Order of Nature, dropped this week, and ahead of a sold-out date at Le Poisson Rouge tomorrow night, the duo head to McKittrick Hotel for a special album release event. There’ll be a discussion moderated by Jon Batiste, an audience Q&A, and live performances of three songs from the new record.
The Cactus Blossoms, Esther Rose @ Murmrr Theatre
With a twangy, lonesome sound and Everly Brothers-style harmonies, Minneapolis duo Cactus Blossoms evoke a gone-by era that got them cast in David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: The Return.
Against Me!, Cursive, Dilly Dally @ Starland Ballroom
Against Me! are on their “2 Nights / 4 Records / 48 Songs” tour, which finds them playing two-night stands in various cities and playing two albums in full each night. The tour hits NJ’s Starland Ballroom for a second night, with performances of White Crosses and Transgender Dysphoria Blues. Long-running indie/emo greats Cursive and grunge revivalists Dilly Dally will return as openers.
The Shacks, Holy Hive, Joanna Sternberg @ Sunnyvale
NYC-based duo The Shacks team up with past billmates Holy Hive for this Brooklyn show, with support from fellow NYC artist Joanna Sternberg.
Maria Bamford, Kate Willett @ The Bell House (2 shows)
Maria Bamford’s Amazon series Lady Dynamite was canceled too soon, as it was a great showcase for her quirky, yet grounded, style of humor. Her standup is a great showcase for it too. She’s awesome.
MIKE, Keiyaa @ The Dance
MIKE has been a staple of NYC’s rap underground for a few years now, and he’s been getting more popular since striking up a collaborative relationship with Earl Sweatshirt, whose Some Rap Songs is cut from a similar cloth as MIKE’s latest work. He graces his hometown with a show tonight.
Despise You, Dropdead, Killer of Sheep, Sick Shit @ The Kingsland
Two veteran powerviolence bands, Despise You and Dropdead, are teaming up for what should be an absolutely apeshit show at The Kingsland.
Bettye LaVette @ The Plaza at 300 Ashland
The great Bettye LaVette, who recently played a run at Cafe Carlyle last week, heads to The Plaza at 300 Ashland for this free show, kicking off BRIC JazzFest.
Thee Oh Sees, Prettiest Eyes, Psychic Graveyard @ Warsaw
Oh Sees are one of those groups, like The Fall, who are constantly morphing but always remain true to themselves. Face Stabber sounds nothing at all like 2008’s The Master’s Bedroom Is Worth Spending a Night In, but you can tell the same person is behind both. Their latest album, Face Stabber, adds jazz to the mix.
Wynonna Judd, Cactus Moser @ Cafe Carlyle
One half of iconic country duo The Judds, Wynonna Judd these days makes music with her band The Big Noise and she just formed new duo The Frothy Pit with Cass McCombs. She’s here wrapping up a week of dates at swanky supper club Cafe Carlyle with husband/drummer Cactus Moser for shows they’re calling “Wynonna & Cactus: Party of Two.”
Rosie Tucker, Oceanator, Beeyotch @ Trans-Pecos
Los Angeles musician Rosie Tucker’s latest LP Never Not Never Not Never Not came out back in March, and tonight’s show features support from NYC-based musicians Oceanator and Beeyotch.
Floorpunch, Down to Nothing, Regulate, One Step Closer, Reaction, Brute @ Gold Sounds Bar
NJ straightedge/youth crew vets Floorpunch haven’t played NYC in 19 years but that changes tonight. They’re headlining “NYC Edge Day,” which also features Richmond straightedge vets Down To Nothing, plus a killer lineup of newer bands: Regulate, One Step Closer, Reaction, and Brute.
