Digable Planets

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights..

Digable Planets, Camp Lo @ Prospect Park Bandshell BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival
Nineties era hip hop group Digable Planets, best known for their 1993 hit “Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat),” are reunited with their full original lineup for their first tour in a while. Beaming positive vibes and infectious grooves, the group’s music holds up extremely well today. Free.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Empress Of, Klaus Johann Grobe @ Central Park SummerStage
Another hard-to-pass-up free outdoor show option today is this SummerStage show with Portand’s Unknown Mortal Orchestra; NYC/LA singer Empress Of and Swiss groovers Klaus Johann Grobe.

Swans, Okkyung Lee @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Michael Gira is saying this year’s The Glowing Man will be the last album for the current Swans lineup. Fortunately, they’re going out on a high note — the album is just as colossal as its predecessors. Tonight’s their second of two sold-out NYC shows with Okkyung Lee.

Lou Reed Tribute @ Lincoln Center/Damrosch Park Bandshell (Out of Doors Festival)
Laurie Anderson curated this day-long tribute to her late husband, titled “The Bells,” with a couple special live performances: “Rock and Roll” at 11:30 with Don Fleming, Lee Ranaldo, Steve Shelley, Matt Sweeney, David Johansen, Lenny Kaye, Jesse Malin, Jon Spencer and more; and “Love Songs” at 7 PM with Laurie Anderson, Anohni, Doveman, Emily Haines, Nona Hendryx, GDavid Johansen, Mark Kozelek, John Cameron Mitchell, Victoria Williams, John Zorn, and more. It’s all free, more info is here, and it will be livestreamed.

John Doe (of X) @ The Grand Victory
It’s the last weekend for Williamsburg club The Grand Victory and punk legend John Doe will help send it off with this early show. Tickets are still available.

Boys Noize, HEALTH, Polica (DJ set) @ Studio E Warehouse
This Jukely-presented show has a pretty wild lineup with beatmaker Boys Noize, pop-industrial group HEALTH, and a DJ set from art popsters Polica (who are featured on Boys Noize’s new LP). It’s at a warehouse at 1260 Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn.

Ian Sweet, Pouty, Coping Skills, Drug Pizza, Cadet Kelly @ Aviv
Brooklyn trio Ian Sweet are newly signed to Hardly Art and will release their first album for the label in about a month.

Chicano Batman, 79.5, The Shacks @ Bowery Ballroom
Chicano Batman keep Latin rock alive, and they’ve gotten approval from Jack White, Austin’s Levitation festival, and more. If you’re going tonight, don’t miss Mazzy Star-ish band The Shacks.

Anicon, Belus @ Union Pool
Black metal locals Anicon recently released their very good Exegesses LP, and tonight they celebrate it with support from their NYC neighbors Belus.

ABRA, KCSB of Awful Records (DJ set) @ Rough Trade
Last year, ABRA released an album of avant-R&B on Awful Records, and this year she signed to True Panther and put out a new EP that leans more heavily on ’80s pop. Whatever mode she’s in, she’s good.

Martin Bisi, The Children, Ritual Humor @ The Footlight
New Ridgewood venue The Footlight is officially open, and tonight they host NYC noise rock vet Martin Bisi.

Puro Instinct, Slonk Donkerson, Wild Pink, Prima, Surf Rock is Dead, Ghost King, Darkwing, The Two Lips, The Bad New Ones @ The Gateway
Bushwick club The Gateway is hosting this all-day show with mostly local acts but headlined by LA’s Puro Instinct. $8 at the doors, starts at 3 PM.

D Generation, Biters, Jeremy and the Harlequins, Wyldlife @ Irving Plaza
Jesse Malin’s band D Generation are back with their “classic lineup” and they just released a new album with more of their true-believin’ punk rock.

Heart, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Cheap Trick @ Bethel Woods Center for the Arts
Three bands who are part classic rock radio regulars, part alternative icons, are currently teamed up for this tour that’s sure to be a fun time. This is one of a few NYC-area shows.

Odonis Odonis, Public Memory, ZGRT @ Saint Vitus Bar
Toronto’s Odonis Odonis pummel you with gothy, industrial/EBM-inspired rock, as can be heard on their new album, Post Plague.

The Warm Up dance parties under the sun at MoMA PS1 continue today, headlined by UK DJ Maya Jane Coles.
