lollapalooza-2015-189

What's going on Saturday?

Flying Lotus @ Lollapalooza 2015 (more by James Richards IV)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Afropunk Fest @ Commodore Barry Park
Brooklyn’s annual Afropunk festival begins today and it’s truly stacked. George Clinton, who recently collaborated with Flying Lotus, Thundercat and Shabazz Palaces (and just signed to FlyLo’s label), plays the same stage as all three of those artists. There’s also R&B/rap vet Cee-Lo Green, British singer Laura Mvula, indie rock staples TV on the Radio, political punks Downtown Boys, and still more.

The Dresden Dolls, PWR BTTM @ The Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk
While Amanda Palmer is constantly active, her band The Dresden Dolls are usually quiet these days. This is an exciting rare show, and the very promising PWR BTTM open.

Prophets of Rage, AWOLNATION, Wakrat @ Barclays Center
While we’d love a Rage Against the Machine reunion tour, Prophets of Rage (which has that whole band minus Zack De La Rocha, plus members of Public Enemy and Cypress Hill) is at least kinda scratching that itch.

The Bangles, Cardiac @ Irving Plaza
You may just remember them for “Walk Like an Egyptian” and “Eternal Flame,” but The Bangles had it all: great original songs, an excellent nose for other people’s songs, and great musicianship.

Dick Dale, The Coffin Daggers @ Brooklyn Bowl
While “surf rock” seems to get thrown around a bit too liberally in the indie pop world, actual surf rock as we know it wouldn’t exist without Dick Dale. Any chance to still see him is one worth taking.

Flume, Shlohmo, Ryan Hemsworth, Chrome Sparks @ Forest Hills Stadium
Flume’s new album Skin has some real-deal hits like “Never Be Like You” and “Say It,” and basically every other song on it is a banger too. Tonight’s sure to be fun.

Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito, DJ Paypal, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, Elysia Crampton, Ash Koosha, @ MoMA PS1
The hot dance parties under the sun continue today with a pretty great lineup all around. Hip hop production vets Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito headline, and then there’s the Brainfeeder-signed DJ Paypal, young Bronx rapper A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, experimental musician Elysia Crampton, and Iranian-born electronic musician Ash Koosha.

Elysia Crampton, Sadaf, Stud1nt, Shellz @ Trans-Pecos
After Warm Up, Elysia Crampton keeps the party going at Ridgewood venue Trans-Pecos.

Reggie Watts, Jena Friedman, Michelle Buteau, The Gotham Easy @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
The biggest event at Brooklyn Comedy Festival, the multi-talented Reggie Watts plays early and late shows at MHOW tonight with a great group of openers.

Monolord, Beastmaker, Sweat Lodge @ Saint Vitus
Swedish doomers Monolord toured North America last year with Windhand and Danava, and now they’re back for a headlining run in support of last year’s Vaenir.

Nosaj Thing, Gerry Read, Lee Bannon, Holodec @ Good Room
Good Room hosts a lineup of beatmakers, headlined by LA hip hop producer Nosaj Thing.

Nomi Ruiz, Lauren Flax, Bridget Marie, Colby B, Amber Valentine, Loud Neighbor, Gil K, K1W1, Luis Maier, La’Fem Ladosha, NEOCAMP @ Output
It’s the 10th anniversary of club kid party Kunst that melds “dance music, art, and iconic fashion” with a host of live acts and DJs in Output’s two main rooms.

Jason Lowenstein (of Sebadoh), Sam Coomes, Saqqara Mastaba @ Union Pool
Quasi’s Sam Coomes just released his first-ever solo album, Bugger Me, and celebrates tonight with other indie rock fixtures, Jason Loewenstein (of Sebdadoh and Fiery Furnaces), and Saqqara Mastaba (featuring other members of Sebadoh and Fiery Furnaces).

Satanicide, VIPER Rocks the Top Gun Soundtrack, Live! @ Mercury Lounge
NYC’s mock-hair metal band Satanicide got back in action earlier this year for a Mercury Lounge show, and tonight they play another one.

Toto @ Town Hall
Whether you love the kistchy ’80s-ness of “Rosanna” and “Africa” or find them to be a terrible, terrible band of very talented musicians, Toto remain iconic of the early ’80s. This lineup features original members Steve Lukather, Steve Pocaro and David Paich.

Tove Lo, Phantogram, Bebe Rexha @ Terminal 5
T5 hosts a sold-out MTV Pre-VMA concert tonight with a lineup of alt-pop.

Gallant @ The Surf Lodge (Montauk)
Gallant, who first caught our ear back in 2013 and has since covered Prince and Drake with Sufjan Stevens and continues to rise. Tonight he plays one of the free summer shows at Montauk’s Surf Lodge.

Matisyahu, HEEMS @ Sole East Outside Break (Montauk)
The Surf Lodge isn’t the only place to see free music in Montauk this summer. Baby’s All Right hosts this show which has Jewish reggae rapper Matisyahu and former Das Racist member Heems.
