If you love the heavy psychedelic rock sounds of Blue Cheer and early Black Sabbath, this entire triple bill was basically made for you.
Guitar Wolf, Hans Condor, Crazy Pills @ Baby’s All Right
When not defending our planet from zombie aliens, Japanese “JET” rockers Guitar Wolf maintain high levels of leather jacket cool and no nonsense rock and roll.
Armand Van Helden, Giorgio Moroder, Soul Clap, DJ Nicky Siano @ Brooklyn Sanctuary
This party called “I Feel Love” promises to bring back some of the hedonism of ’70s disco. Emphasis on “feel” — “be prepared that you should be comfortable standing, walking, climbing stairs, being touched, interacting with participants, or being alone” and “may include nudity.” Also, “I Feel Love” creator Giorgio Moroder will DJ.
The Anniversary, Laura Stevenson, Extra Classic @ Bowery Ballroom
The Anniversary released just two albums in the early 2000s before breaking up in ’04, the emo classic Designing a Nervous Breakdown and the more ’60s/’70s-inspired Your Majesty. Both are very good for very different reasons, and it’s great to have this band back. Tonight’s their first of two NYC shows on this tour.
Pissed Jeans, Surfbort, Nap @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
The new Brooklyn Night Bazaar opened yesterday, and today it continues with the awesome, confrontational post-hardcore band Pissed Jeans.
Bim Skala Bim, King Django, Skarroñeros @ Don Pedro
Boston ska legends formed in the early ’80s and stayed firmly rooted in a more niche element of ska that incorporated elements of reggae, calypso, and Latin sounds. Tonight they make a rare trip to NYC.
Heart, Cheap Trick, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts @ PNC Bank Arts Center
Heart, Cheap Trick, and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts are all bands with regular Classic Rock Radio play but also a strong influence on alternative music. It’s made for some very diverse crowds on this tour, and also all three bands are still fun to watch live (especially Heart, whose Ann Wilson is still truly a powerhouse).
Sauna Youth, Future Punx, Bodega @ Union Pool
London’s Sauna Youth make shouty, punky indie rock, with heaps of energy and attitude. Last year’s Distractions hits the ground running and tears through 14 songs in less than 30 minutes, only slowing down once. They’re terrific and this is their first U.S. show, and they’ll play Cake Shop on Sunday.
Oddball Comedy Fest @ Nikon Jones Beach
The traveling comedy tour hits Jones Beach today, with a lineup including John Oliver, Sebastian Maniscalco, Bridget Everett, Kyle Dunnigan, Michelle Wolf, Pete Davidson, Katherine Ryan, Tom Segura and host Jeff Ross.
Bettye LaVette @ Iridium Jazz Club
Soul veteran Bettye LaVette returned last year with her new album Worthy, which was nominated for the Best Blues Album Grammy. She remains a pistol.
Martin Bisi, Shlipa Ray, Parlor Walls, Prima, No Shoes, Dead Waves, Holly Overton, Quitzow, Sic Tic, Sir Kn8, Marital Dispute, ColdBlinds, Espejismo @ The Gateway
This is the “Noise Love Fest” which is “an all day art & music event featuring a local artist exhibit/market, performance art, and our favorite woke noise makers rocking both stages from early to late!”
Richard Buckner, Alex Nahas @ Union Hall
Long-running alt-country singer Richard Buckner may not have gotten as big as some of his Merge labelmates (you may remember one of Arcade Fire’s earliest NYC shows was with him) or some of the people he’s influenced (like Bon Iver), but he’s consistently kept it at, and is due for a new record soon.
Dead Leaf Echo, Dru Cutler, The Falling Birds, Amos Rose @ Unit J
Local shoegazers Dead Leaf Echo headline this benefit show for community radio station Radio Free Brooklyn’s expanded Bushwick space.
Real Numbers, My Teenage Stride, Big Quiet, Lame Drivers @ Little Skips
Minneapolis’ Real Numbers make mod-ish, tinny and relentlessly catchy indiepop that owes a whole lot to Television Personalities. They’ve got an album on Slumberland due out in September and this is their second of three NYC shows this week (and the best lineup of the three).
Gang Green, Antagonizers ATL, Warning Shots @ Sunnyvale
Boston punk vets Gang Green remain highly influential and they still sound great today. Tonight they return to NYC for a gig at Sunnyvale.
MSTRKRFT @ Webster Hall
While Jesse F. Keeler has been busy with the reunited Death From Above 1979 for a while now, he recently teamed back up with Al-P to release the first MSTRKRFT album since 2009’s Fist of God. It’s called OPERATOR, and it’s got the same catchy/abrasive mix they’ve always excelled at.
Billy Talent, The Dirty Nil, Badflower @ Gramercy Theatre
Popular Canadian punky rockers Billy Talent return to NYC tonight, and if you’re going to this show, it’s worth catching openers The Dirty Nil.
29Rooms @ 8 Ingraham Street
Part of fashion week, this warehouse sized installation features “distinct spaces developed by a diverse list of artists and collaborators” including Tinashe, Abbi Jacobson, RuPaul, Adwoa Aboah, Adrian Grenier’s The Lonely Whale Foundation, and many more. Free.
Dragonforce @ Saint Vitus
Mainly we just want you to realize the Guitar Hero band is playing Brooklyn underground metal club Saint Vitus (twice) this weekend.
