What's going on Saturday?

Warpaint @ Beach Goth 2015 (http://www.brooklynvegan.com/2015-beach-goth/)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Balance and Composure @ Rough Trade (2 PM)
Balance and Composure just returned with their first album for Vagrant, Light We Made, which ditches the grunge-revival of their past albums for a mellower, more eccentric sound.

Descendents, Fucked Up, Night Birds @ PlayStation Theater
No band besides maybe the Ramones and the Buzzcocks has been more influential on pop punk than Descendents, and they returned this year with their first album in 12 years, Hypercaffium Spazzinate, which is genuinely a great record. Tonight’s openers were surely influenced by Descendents, and both are very worth catching.

Titus Andronicus, Happiness @ Villain
Titus Andronicus may write lengthy rock operas, but they’re a punk band at heart, and this always comes across at their shows. Note this show was moved from Market Hotel to Williamsburg’s Villain.

Green Day @ Webster Hall
Speaking of punk bands who write rock operas, Green Day are playing a couple VERY small venues (for their standards) in NYC this weekend. This is the second.

Warpaint, Facial @ Bowery Ballroom
Warpaint recently returned with their new album Heads Up, which, aside from the fun danceable single “New Song,” is still psychedelic and anti-commercial-sounding. This is their second of two NYC shows this weekend.

Aloha, Neighbors, Gurus @ Baby’s All Right
Polyvinyl Records turns 20 this year, and classic Polyvinyl band Aloha are also back with their first album in six years. It still makes good use of marimbas, but it also introduces an ’80s vibe to their sound (they namedropped The Blue Nile and Prefab Sprout as influences).

Strike Anywhere, A Global Threat, War on Women @ Saint Vitus
Melodic hardcore greats Strike Anywhere toured with A Global Threat back in 2006, and to celebrate the 10th anniversary of that tour, they’re doing it again. If you’re going, it’s worth catching the killer opening band War On Women, whose live show you will not forget.

JJ Doll, Exotica, Yung Mayne, Ezrakh, DJ Guy @ Aviv
Aviv is closing at the end of the month, but it’s going out with a handful of cool shows. Confrontational local punks JJ Doll (ex-Ivy) play this one.

Pharoah Sanders Quartet with William Henderson, Gerald Cannon, Jeff “Tain” Watts @ Birdland (two shows)
Legendary spiritual jazz musician Pharoah Sanders played in Coltrane’s band and also put out plenty of classic records as a bandleader, and his influence can still be felt today on guys like Kamasi Washington (who he played NYC with earlier this year).

Caged Animals, Everyone Is Dirty, True Dreams @ Elvis Guesthouse
Brooklyn’s heartfelt Caged Animals play tonight with California’s punky Everyone is Dirty.

Father John Misty @ Gramercy Theatre (The New Yorker Festival)
Part of the 2016 New Yorker Festival, FJM will perform live after a conversation with Matthew Trammell.

Sturgill Simpson @ Kings Theatre
Having released the ambitious A Sailor’s Guide to Earth earlier this year, the forward thinking country singer plays the gorgeous Kings Theatre tonight.

Nick Waterhouse @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Modern lover of vintage soul and R&B, Nick Waterhouse just released his third album, Never Twice, which brings an enthusiasm to the material that matches his ability to recreate the sonics of the original era.

Steely Dan tribute w/ Lithuania, Ian Sweet, Twiga, Bad Faces, Speedy Ortiz (members of), The So So Glos (members of), Ava Luna (members of), Laser Background (members of) @ Shea Stadium
Some people think Steely Dan are the epitome of ’70s excess and wanky Yacht Rock cheese. Others find them to be one of the most deeply weird, subversive (lyrically especially) bands ever to score a string of hits. (Still others say, “Well, ‘Peg’ is pretty catchy.”) Folks from a bunch of different bands who fall in the “pro” camp will be covering a bunch of Dan songs at this event sponsored by The Talkhouse, learning to work the saxophone and playing just what they feel.

Built To Spill, Hop Along, Alex G @ Stone Pony
Built to Spill put out three classic records in the ’90s, and their recent material is great too. If you’re heading to NJ for this show don’t miss openers Hop Along and Alex G.

Bill Frisell @ Blue Note
An insanely talented guitarist who can play just about any style, Bill Frisell is a wonder to see perform. Tonight he plays with Greg Leisz (guitar and steel guitars), Tony Scherr (bass) and Kenny Wollesen (drums).

Richard Lloyd (of Television), Faith with Felice Rosser, The Romantic Comedy @ The Bowery Electric
Guitar great and Television member Richard Lloyd plays with his solo band tonight.
