What’s going on Saturday?

M83 @ ACL 2016 (more by Tim Griffin)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Teenage Fanclub, Skylar Gudasz @ Bowery Ballroom
Scotland’s Teenage Fanclub have been at it for 25 years, making awesome, harmony-driven guitar pop, most recently heard on this year’s terrific Here.

Duchess Says @ Elvis Guesthouse
Montreal’s Duchess Says are a bonkers, bananas, must-see live act thanks to wild-eyed, firebrand singer Annie-Claude who never lets there be a passive audience at a show. Miss them at your peril, and we’re not sure how tiny Elvis Guesthouse is gonna survive this.

The Besnard Lakes, Harsh Crowd, The Pens, Eric DiVito @ Taste of the Seaport (day show)
This is the annual Taste of The Seaport which shows off the growing culinary options the Seaport has to offer, all to benefit local schools. There are bands and headlining are Montreal’s awesome Besnard Lakes who are making the trip across the border just for this. They’re on at 2 PM. Free.

Steely Dan with Rickie Lee Jones @ Beacon Theatre
Donald Fagen and Walter Becker are here for a 10-show run at Beacon Theatre. Some nights are full-album shows; others, like tonight, has Rickie Lee Jones joining them.

Squeeze, The English Beat @ Capitol Theatre
One of the all-time great pop songwriting teams, Chris Difford and Glen Tilbrook bring a full-band version of Squeeze to Port Chester. Making it all the more a night of early-’80s pop are the ska-tinged sounds of The English Beat.

Emily Jane White, Foxtails Brigade, Scam Avenue, Centaurus @ Sunnyvale (BV Presents)
Earlier this year, Emily Jane White released They Moved In Shadow All Together, a very good dark folk album that fans of Marissa Nadler and Chelsea Wolfe need to hear. This weekend, we’re thrilled to present two NYC shows that Emily’s playing, this being the second. Hope to see you there!

White Lung, Surfbort, Weeping Icon @ Villain
White Lung is one of the best punk bands going, thanks to a sound that stays true to the genre’s short/loud/fast formula but also pushes it in all kinds of directions. This year’s Paradise is another winner. (This show was moved from Market Hotel.)

Cymbals Eat Guitars, Field Mouse, Bueno @ Shea Stadium
Once part of the lo-fi boom, Cymbals Eat Guitars are now making big-sounding rock records and this year’s Pretty Years is their best yet. Field Mouse, whose new album features Joe from CEG, are worth catching too.

Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Common, DNCE, Emeli Sande, Prince Royce, Blood Orange, Salva, Cipha Sounds, Lil Yachty, Kevin Garrett, Danielle Bradbery, Sir The Baptist, Bebe Rexha, Levi Carter @ Barclays Center
TIDAL throws this huge show, which has a lineup that’s kind of all over the place, but with some undeniably great stuff. Beyonce and Blood Orange are both makers of some of 2016’s best albums, Lauryn Hill is more legendary by the minute, Common remains one of hip hop’s greats, Nicki Minaj has a delivery like no one else, etc.

M83, Shura @ Terminal 5
M83 returned this year with Junk, a confusingly odd followup to their mainstream breakthrough Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, but still one with a handful of bangers. Tonight’s their second of two Terminal 5 shows this weekend with Shura.

DJ Shadow, Noer the Boy @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
With his first album in five years just out, DJ Shadow plays this show tonight. There are tons of guests on the LP, maybe a couple will show here?

Mr. Oizo, Dischetto, TJANI @ Webster Hall
French dance producer Mr. Ozio returned — as did his puppet video star Flat Eric — this year for new album All Wet. Whether Flat Eric will make an appearance tonight remains to be seen.

Cosmonauts, Heavy Birds, Brian Hill and the Noh Starrs @ Baby’s All Right
With their first album in three years just out, Fullerton California and Burger Records mainstays Cosmonauts bring thier psych pop to Brooklyn for the first time in a long time.

Chrysta Bell @ Berlin
David Lynch producers her albums, she has Stephen O’Malley of Sun O)))) play on them, she’s in the new Twin Peaks, and she plays this tiny East Village spot tonight.

Bob Weir (w/ Bryan Devendorf, Scott Devendorf, Josh Kaufman, Steve Kimock, Jon Shaw) @ Kings Theatre
Bob Weir may have played much larger venues on his tour with John Mayer as a band member, but for indie rock fans, this lineup is a way more exciting way to see the Grateful Dead member. He’s joined by Bryan & Scott Devendorf of The National, who spearheaded a massive Dead tribute album earlier this year, and Josh Kaufman who plays on many songs on that album. There’s also longtime Weir collaborator Steve Kimock and Shakey Graves member Jon Shaw.

The Dillinger Escape Plan, O’Brother, Cult Leader, Bent Knee @ Webster Hall
Frenetic mathcore greats The Dillinger Escape Plan say they’re breaking up in the near future, but first they have a great new album (that came out yesterday) and a tour (that hits NYC tonight). If you’re going tonight, you probably don’t wanna miss Cult Leader (ex-Gaza) either.

Mondo Drag, The Well, Crypt Trip @ Saint Vitus
If you need a dose of Sabbath-y stoner metal tonight, this show should do the trick.

B L A C K I E, Juiceboxxx, Negashi Armada, Yung Mayne @ Silent Barn
If you like Yeezus and Death Grips and Run the Jewels, but don’t listen to B L A C K I E, you may want to change that. He headlines a late show at Silent Barn tonight (11:30 PM start).

BRIC JazzFest @ BRIC House
BRIC JazzFest continues today with some cool stuff like Kendrick Lamar collaborator Terrace Martin, Tom Waits collaborator Marc Ribot, and much more. Full lineup and more details at the link above.

CHVRCHES, Potty Mouth @ Radio City
Scottish pop band CHVRCHES continue to get more and more famous, and tonight they take on NYC’s historic Radio City Music Hall. Potty Mouth, who pull their sound from ’90s punk and indie rock, make for an interesting pairing.

Told Slant, Sports, Yowler, The Meltaways @ Silent Barn
This whole bill is pretty cool for fans of lo-fi/DIY/indie/punk/etc, with Epoch band Told Slant, Ohio pop punks Sports, the bare-bones solo project of All Dogs singer Maryn Jones (Yowler), and Brooklyn punks The Meltaways.

Nervous Dater, Binary Heart, Cold Wrecks, Safety @ Aviv
NYC pop punks Nervous Dater had their recent EP produced by Hop Along’s Joe Reinhart, who’s also produced records for Modern Baseball and Joyce Manor, and if you like those three bands, there’s a good chance you’ll like Nervous Dater too. Tonight they play one of the last-ever shows at Aviv (where they’ve played before).

Bill Frisell @ Blue Note
An insanely talented guitarist who can play just about any style, Bill Frisell is a wonder to see perform. This week at Blue Note his show is called “When You Wish Upon a Star,” a tribute to the music of Walt Disney films, with help from That Dog’s Petra Haden, plus Eyvind Kang (viola), Thomas Morgan (bass) and Rudy Royston (drums).
