What’s going on Saturday?
You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…
Field Music, The Effects, Imaginary People @ Rough Trade
Led by brothers David and Peter Brewis, Field Music just released Commontime, their first in four years, which is another impressive example of their undeniable talent and invention. It’s also their best yet. This is their first NYC show in four years, they’re always good live.
Girlpool, Palm, Fraternal Twin, Vagabon @ Market Hotel
DIY duo Girlpool have a simple, stripped-down sound, but really it’s all in the lyrics which can be highly relatable. Cool local openers tonight too.
Petite Noir, Anna Wise @ Mercury Lounge
South African musician Petite Noir crosses several genres for his sound that’s difficult to pinpoint but easy to enjoy. Tonight’s his second of two NYC shows this weekend, and it’s also worth catching Anna Wise, who sings on several Kendrick Lamar songs.
Pusha T, Lil Bibby, G Herbo @ Playstation Theater
Former Clipse member Pusha T released his latest solo album, Darkest Before Dawn, this past December, and he’s still at the top of his game. With Lil Bibby and G Herbo (fka Lil Herb), it’s a good bill all around.
Slothrust, Yung, Diet Cig @ Baby’s All Right
This is the second of two NYC shows this week for Danish indie rockers Yung, who are pretty powerful in a live setting. It’s also worth catching Diet Cig, whose endless energy on stage is pretty addictive.
Majid Jordan, DJ TJ @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
While R&B duo Majid Jordan are best known for contributing to Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home,” they recently put out their own album too (which features Drake on a track). Tonight’s show is sold out.
Fucking Invincible, Congenital Death, Hardware, Death Vacation, Convulsant @ Aviv
Providence hardcore band Fucking Invincible includes members of Dropdead and Daughters, and as you might expect, they make a hell of a racket. Their 2014 album, It’ll Get Worse Before It Gets Better, is a ripper, but this is really the kind of thing you want to see live.
Mike Birbiglia @ The Lynn Redgrave Theater
Comedian Mike Birbiglia has been doing his show “Thank God for the Jokes” for nearly two years. He’s putting it to bed, but not before this run which was recently extended through May.
Guerilla Toss, Downtown Boys, Future Punx, Disco Phantom (DJ set) @ Palisades
Tonight’s a solid show of post-punk influenced bands, headlined by DFA punk-funkers Guerilla Toss, Providence’s strident and saxxy Downtown Boys and nu wavers Future Punx.
Summer Twins, High Waisted, Thick @ Gateway
Chelsea and Justine Brown have fronted L.A. band Summer Twins since 2008, making appealing indie pop that draws on a variety of ’60s influences (girl groups, Ye-Ye, early rock n’ roll).
M.A.P.S. Festival feat. Treriksröset, Kakerlak, Deterge, Anal Hearse, Slave Coordination, Taskmaster, Heat Signature, Breaking The Will, Striations/Interracial Sex, Corpile, Worth, Terror Cell Unit, Venerence, Field Grave, Penchant @ Trans Pecos
It’s the 3rd edition of M.A.P.S (Metropolitan Audio Pain Source) featuring the finest in industrial/noise/power electronics.
The Raunchiest Show with Jo and Aparna feat. Jo Firestone, Aparna Nancherla, Anna Drezen, Julio Torres, Chris Duffy, Josh Rabinowitz, & more @ Union Hall
Some comedians say don’t go blue, but tonight’s show, hosted by Jo firestone and Aparna Nancherla, embrace filth. You have been warned.
